Una Tormey Named New Chief Executive Of ITBA

Una Tormey has been appointed the new Chief Executive of the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (ITBA). Tormey began her new role on Dec. 1. She joined the ITBA as a membership coordinator two years ago, and rose to the role of operations manager. Tormey also earned additional experience working with previous Chief Executive Shane O'Dwyer.

Tormey, who will be supported by Membership Coordinator Danielle Deveney and Education Coordinator Hannah Marks, said, “I am really looking forward to working with Irish Breeders and with the members of the ITBA Council. The Association has many exciting plans for 2023 and beyond and I will endeavour to deliver these successfully to the benefit of Irish Breeders.”

ITBA Chairman Cathy Grassick said, “On behalf of the ITBA council, I am delighted that Una Tormey has accepted the position of Chief Executive of the ITBA. With the hard work and support of Una, the ITBA Team and its Council members, I am looking forward to developing the Association and delivering a quality service to the breeders of Ireland.”

Alex Eade Named Large Independent Racecourses Secretary General

Alex Eade has been named the successor to Charles Barnett as the next Secretary General of the Large Independent Racecourses. Barnett is due to retire after six years in the post. Eade begins his new role in the new year and has previously been General Manager at Goodwood Racecourse for five years (2015-2019). He also spent six years at Betfair, latterly as Director of Sporting Affairs. Eade is currently Group Commercial Director at Lloyd Webber Theatres, Ltd.

Bridget Guerin, Chairman of York Racecourse, said, “Firstly, I would like to thank and pay tribute to Charles Barnett, who has undertaken the role of Large Independents Secretary General since 2016 as part of a distinguished career of service to the sport. On behalf of the Large Independent Racecourses, I would like to welcome Alex to the role. Following an extensive process which included excellent candidates, Alex's combination of racing, betting and commercial experience and passion for the sport shone through.”

Eade added, “I have been a racing fan since childhood and thoroughly enjoyed working within this fabulous sport during my time at Goodwood. I am therefore absolutely delighted to be returning and honoured to be taking up this role.”

James Crespi Appointed New General Manager Of Epsom

James Crespi has been appointed the new General Manager of Epsom Downs Racecourse, The Jockey Club announced on Wednesday. He will begin his duties on Monday, Dec. 5. The Chief Operating Officer of West Wittering Estate PLC since 2015, Crespi also spent 10 years at the Goodwood Estate, where he rose to the position of General Manager of Goodwood Racecourse. Simon Durrant will remain as General Manager of Kempton Park Racecourse while Sarah Drabwell has been appointed General Manager of Sandown Park on a permanent basis, having held the position in an acting capacity since late 2021.

James Crespi said, “I'm excited to return to racing and think The Jockey Club is a fantastic, dynamic and forward thinking organisation. Epsom is steeped in legacy and a unique venue; I look forward to delivering first class racing there and helping to ensure the Derby remains the greatest Flat race globally for generations to come.”

Amy Starkey, Managing Director for The Jockey Club's East Region, said, “I'm delighted that James will be joining the team and bringing such a wealth of experience in managing historic multi-use businesses.

“His appointment is part of a new management structure across our London courses which is designed to ensure the exciting opportunities for growth presented by all three venues can be seized upon.

“It is important that each course has a dedicated general manager to lead our fantastic teams to deliver this and we are looking forward to exciting years ahead across Epsom Downs, Kempton Park and Sandown Park.”

Harry McAlpine Becomes New Australasian Representative For Tattersalls

Bloodstock consultant Harry McAlpine has been named as an additional Tattersalls Australasian representative alongside Jenny McAlpine. The Queensland native is based on the McAlpine family's Eureka Stud, and handles stallion nominations and sales. He also acts as a bloodstock agent and consultant managing the Black Soil Bloodstock racing and breeding operation of Brian Siemsen.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “Harry is a great addition to the Tattersalls team of overseas representatives and his appointment working alongside Jenny McAlpine demonstrates the importance we attach to promoting Tattersalls sales throughout Australia and New Zealand. Having worked at Tattersalls in Newmarket and at William Inglis in Sydney, Harry is already familiar with the Tattersalls ethos and sales portfolio and between him and Jenny, Tattersalls has two highly respected individuals to represent the company in a hugely important market.”

McAlpine added, “Tattersalls has a fantastic reputation in both Australia and New Zealand and to be promoting Tattersalls alongside Jenny is a role I am looking forward to enormously.”
