COVID-19: Zia Park Live Meet Suspended Through Nov. 30

Pursuant to restrictions put in place today by New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Zia Park's current live racing meet has been suspended through Nov. 30.

Effective Monday, Nov. 16, all non-essential businesses, including horse racing, are required to cease in-person activities until the end of the month.

The current Zia Park race meet is scheduled to run through Dec. 23. Further updates on the 2020 Zia Park racing schedule will be provided as they are made available.

Current training days and hours of operation will remain in effect.

American Anthem to Stand in New Mexico

MGSW American Anthem (Bodemeister–Indy’s Windy by A.P. Indy) has been purchased by Reliance Ranches, in a sale brokered by Pat Morelli, and will stand stud at Sierra Blanco Equine in New Mexico.

Bred by WinStar Farm, he was purchased by Aron Yagoda’s E.J. Stable for $180,000 at KEESEP and resold to his breeder in partnership with China Horse Club for $435,000 at OBS March. He won three graded events, including the GII Woody Stephens S., and placed in multiple Grade Is for those connections and trainer Bob Baffert, before selling to Don Tiger for $145,000 at last year’s KEENOV sale. American Anthem’s record stands at 21-6-3-4 with earnings of $848,490.

American Anthem To Enter Stud at Sierra Blanca Equine In New Mexico For 2021

Reliance Ranches, LLC of Guthrie, Okla., announces the purchase of American Anthem, by Arkansas Derby winner and classic-placed sire Bodemeister.

American Anthem, a multiple graded stakes winner began his career by winning his first start at two and following up with a successful 3-year-old season posting back-to-back graded victories in the Grade 3 Lazaro Barrera Stakes at Santa Anita and the G2 Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont. He followed his graded wins with third-place finishes in the G1 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes at Saratoga and the G1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship.

As a 4-year-old, he won the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes and raced into his 6-year-old year, finishing third in the G1 Runhappy Carter Stakes in 2020. American Anthem finished on the board in 16 of 21 starts and earned a total of $848,490.00.

Bred in Kentucky by Winstar Farm, American Anthem won his stakes races wearing the silks of China Horse Club and Winstar Farm, et al.

The sale of American Anthem for stud duty was brokered by Patrick Morell of Morell Bloodstock, LLC.
He will stand at Sierra Blanca Equine in Alamogordo, N.M.

GSW Runaway Ghost Retired, to Stand in New Mexico

GSW Runaway Ghost (Ghostzapper–Rose’s Desert, by Desert God) has been retired from racing and will stand for the 2021 breeding season at Double LL Farms in Bosque, New Mexico. With lifetime earnings of $783,509, he won a total of six stakes races, from six furlongs to a mile and an eighth, by a combined 27 1/4 lengths. His GIII Sunland Derby win earned him the right to “Run for the Roses” in the 2018 GI Kentucky Derby, but he was forced to scratch prior to the Derby after suffering a training injury while at Sunland Park Racetrack in New Mexico.

Runaway Ghost came back as a 4-year-old and won three stakes races at Sunland Park before shipping to Kentucky for the GII Commonwealth S. at Keeneland, where he suffered an ankle injury after twice clipping heels in the race. A third generation homebred for Joe Peacock of San Antonio, Texas, Runaway Ghost retires sound and will continue to be owned by the Peacock Family as he starts his second career.
