New Approach’s Telecaster Dominates the Grand Prix de Deauville

Patience has long been a particular virtue of Hughie Morrison and Sunday’s G2 Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville was testament to his ability to play the waiting game as Castle Down Racing’s Telecaster (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) fully came of age. Sent straight to the front by Christophe Soumillon, the 13-10 favourite whose previous foray to France had resulted in a four-length success in ParisLongchamp’s G3 La Coupe June 25 was always content untroubled at the head of affairs on this deep surface. Setting down for his plunge up the straight, the bay was on his own at the end of this 12 1/2-furlong feature as he powered to a 6 1/2-length verdict over last year’s runner-up Soft Light (Fr) (Authorized {Ire}), who edged out last year’s winner Ziyad (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) by 3/4 of a length.

“There were doubts beforehand as to whether he would stay this distance or not, as he had run a moderate race over it in the Derby, and also about the ground but going down to the start he gave me a lot of confidence,” Soumillon commented. “He was very relaxed, so I decided to go on and he handled that very well–it was no effort for him. Turning for home, I had them covered and he quickened very nicely. Hughie Morrison is very good at handling older horses, which boosted my confidence.”

First coming to prominence when beating Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) on good-to-firm in York’s G2 Dante S. last May, Telecaster was last of the 13 to run in the Derby and beat only one rival on his only subsequent 3-year-old outing in Sandown’s G1 Eclipse S. Returning with an encouraging third behind the subsequent G1 Prince of Wales’s S. hero Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the June 7 G3 Brigadier Gerard S. at Haydock, he stayed at that 10-furlong trip to gain a perfect confidence-booster in the La Coupe before finishing fourth in the July 25 G2 York S.

Morrison was not ruling out a tilt at the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and said, “He was very raw mentally and physically last year and anything after the Dante was always going to a big step. He needed putting away for next year and thanks to the patience of Mark Weinfeld and his sister Helena we were able to do that. He’s always been a very exciting horse, but we were concerned that the ground might be too deep for him. Christophe says he can go on any ground, but he’s more comfortable with a bit of cut. The Arc has exceptionals horses in it this year and he would have to improve to feature–I’m not saying he can’t or won’t, but it’s exciting to think he can be considered in the same bracket as them.”

Telecaster is out of the stable’s talented but free-going Shirocco Star (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}), who was runner-up in both the G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 Irish Oaks, as well as the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. when it held group 2 status and was also third in the G1 Pretty Polly S. Her 2017 foal is Godolphin’s classy 3-year-old Al Suhail (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who recently took the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. having finished runner-up in the G3 Autumn S. and third in the G3 Solario S. last term. The fourth dam Hyabella (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), one of four black-type winners out of the G2 Prix de l’Opera heroine Bella Colora (GB) (Bellypha {Ire}), produced the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. winner Poet (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) who relished testing ground. Bella Colora is kin to the G1 Irish Oaks heroine and excellent producer Colorspin (GB) (High Top {Ire}) and the G1 Champion S. hero Cezanne (GB) (Ajdal) from the immediate dam line of the great matriarch Reprocolor (GB) (Jimmy Reppin {GB}). Also connected to the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas runner-up and G3 Tetrarch S.-winning sire France (GB) (Desert Prince {Ire}), the dam has a filly foal by Frankel (GB) to come.

New Approach’s New Treasure Takes the Round Tower

In the immediate aftermath of Friday’s G3 Heider Family Stables Round Tower S. at The Curragh, there was almost an audible groan from those who failed to take note that Jim Bolger’s representative New Treasure (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) was allowed to start at 66-1 in a race that his dam had won on her debut in 2008. In the pattern races for juveniles that have taken place in Britain and Ireland since mid-June, there have been winners at 150-1, 66-1, 66-1, 33-1, 14-1 and 28-1 with the latter being the return of this stable’s Mac Swiney (Ire) by the same sire in last week’s G2 Futurity S. Coolcullen’s engine is starting to crank now and it was a case of strange science that saw a totally unexposed son of Maoineach (Congaree) so readily ignored by the punters. Fading late when seventh on debut behind TDN Rising Star Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) over seven furlongs here Aug. 9, the homebred was one of very few in the line-up equipped on pedigree to handle this heavy surface and see out the trip if it turned into a stiff test at the six-furlong trip. Those factors told at the end as he saw off the well-backed 13-8 favourite Teresa Mendoza (Ire) (Territories {Ire}) to score by a half length, with the 28-1 shot Coulthard (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) 1 1/4 lengths away in third.

New Treasure had been ridden forward on his introduction and paid the penalty, but the anchor was down from the break this time with Kevin Manning restraining in rear intent on saving for the finish. Travelling with ease alongside Teresa Mendoza as they sauntered through the ground at halfway, the chestnut was in front of that rival at the furlong pole, narrowly behind shortly after but back in charge as staying power came into play in the last half a furlong. Bolger’s daughter Una Manning was on hand and said, “The dam won this race first time out and Jim is delighted with him. Things just didn’t work out for him the last day when he was a bit keen first time out. We were confident that he would run a good race today. I’m not sure what the plans are, but I’m sure he’s well entered up.”

The aforementioned Maoineach was not just a one-hit wonder, following her notable debut success in this with another in the following year’s G3 Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial S. After Bolger had mated her with Sea the Stars (Ire), Teofilo (Ire), Dream Ahead and Dawn Approach (Ire), this was the first time that New Approach had entered the equation and it may be that a perfect alchemy has been discovered with her eighth foal. Armed with a yearling full-brother to the winner, the half-sister to the stakes winner and GII Jim Dandy S. third Tiz Now Tiz Then (Tiznow) descended from the prolific grade I-winning Kentucky Oaks heroine Dispute (Danzig) could yet prove herself a notable producer for her renowned breeder.

New Approach’s Mac Swiney In Futurity Upset

It was about time for another Jim Bolger star to come forward and Saturday saw his outsider Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) duly prevail to put Coolcullen back in the headlines in The Curragh’s G2 Galileo Irish EBF Futurity S. Hardly advertising his claims when ninth in Leopardstown’s G3 Tyros S. over this seven-furlong trip Aug. 6, the 28-1 shot was the subject of a no-nonsense ride from Kevin Manning tracking Ballydoyle’s pacemaker Ontario (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) throughout. With that 20-1 shot refusing to give up on the lead, the homebred had to get down to bare knuckles late on and only managed to subdue that front-runner in the final yards along with the 4-5 favourite Cadillac (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Approaching the line, it was Mac Swiney who had more to give and he forged a half-length verdict over the market-leader, with the same margin back to the game Ontario in third. “He did it well on ground he wouldn’t really appreciate,” Una Manning commented. “The plan now is to go for the [G1] National Stakes. When he won here the last time he said he was his Derby horse. It seemed to be a strong race. Hopefully we can get a good result in the National Stakes now and go from there.”

Mac Swiney, who had finished fifth behind TDN Rising Star Hudson River (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in a course-and-distance maiden June 28 before breaking his maiden again over this track and trip July 18 prior to his Tyros reversal, is inbred 2×3 to Galileo. His unraced dam Halla Na Saoire (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) is a full-sister to the G2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner and G1 Irish Derby third Light Heavy (Ire) and a half to Halla Siamsa (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) who produced the G1 Dewhurst S. hero Parish Hall (Ire) from a mating with Teofilo and his full-brother Hall of Fame (Ire) who was third in this. The third dam Amoura (Northfields) is also the ancestress of the Listed Curragh S. winner An Ghalanta (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who is in turn the dam of this year’s Listed Empress S. winner Time Scale (GB) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) and Bletchley (GB) (Makfi {GB}) who was runner-up in the GII Nassau S. and G3 Albany S. Halla Na Saoire also has a yearling colt by Vocalised.
