Spendthrift To Stand Rock Your World

Hronis Racing LLC & Talla Racing LLC's Rock Your World (Candy Ride {Arg}–Charm the Maker, by Empire Maker), the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby winner and morning-line second favorite for Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby, will stand at B. Wayne Hughes's Spendthrift Farm at the conclusion of his racing career.

Bred by trainer Ron McAnally and his wife Deborah, Rock Your World was a $650,000 purchase by Sapphire Stable at the 2019 Keeneland September sale before joining the Southern California barn of trainer John Sadler. A debut winner sprinting six furlongs on turf at Santa Anita on New Year's Day, the dark bay rallied to a 2 1/4-length success in the Feb. 27 Pasadena S. Possessed of an each-way pedigree, Rock Your World was given a chance to show what he could do on the dirt in the GI Santa Anita Derby, and he set a strong pace en route to a 4 1/4-length defeat of Medina Spirit (Protonico) before galloping out strongly.

“We are really excited about Rock Your World and thankful to the Hronis family, Michael Talla, and John Sadler for allowing us to be a part of the horse's promising future,” said Spendthrift General Manager Ned Toffey. “Rock Your World has a wonderful combination of sheer talent, pedigree and sire power, and he's an imposing physical specimen which you would expect from a $650,000 yearling. We were especially taken by the brilliance he displayed in the Santa Anita Derby in his first start on the dirt, and think he has a great shot to show that again in the Kentucky Derby and beyond.”

A full-brother to GSP She's Our Charm, Rock Your World is out of Charm the Maker, a two-time black-type winner who was second in the GI Hollywood Starlet S. and third in the GI Oak Leaf S. as a juvenile. Rock Your World's Grade III-winning second dam Charm the Giant (Ire) (Giant's Causeway) is herself the dam of GSW Liam the Charmer (Smart Strike) and is a daughter of MGSW & GISP Olympic Charmer (Olympio). The last-mentioned is also the dam of MGSP and stakes-producing Charming Legacy (Ire) (Danehill).

“We are excited about of our relationship with Spendthrift Farm on such a special horse like Rock Your World,” said Kosta Hronis of Hronis Racing. “It is hard to argue with the success they've had when it comes to standing premier stallions, and we are hopeful we can accomplish a lot with this colt before we retire him to stud.”

Added Michael Talla: “We are thrilled to have a horse like this. Hopefully, Rock Your World will be the son to carry on the Candy Ride sire line, and I can't think of a better place than Spendthrift for him to get the opportunity to do that.”

‘Talent, Pedigree, And Sire Power’: Spendthrift Secures Breeding Rights To Rock Your World

Spendthrift Farm has secured the breeding rights to undefeated Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner and Kentucky Derby (G1) contender Rock Your World, it was announced Thursday.

Rock Your World – the second choice on the morning line for Saturday's coveted $3 million Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs – will stand stud at the historical Lexington-based farm upon his retirement from racing.

“We are really excited about Rock Your World and thankful to the Hronis family, Michael Talla, and John Sadler for allowing us to be a part of the horse's promising future,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift General Manager.

Trained by John Sadler, Rock Your World began his racing career on New Year's Day, winning on debut at six furlongs before stretching out around two turns to win the one-mile Pasadena S. in his second start – both coming over the Santa Anita turf course. Earlier this month, the son of Candy Ride (Arg) asserted himself as a serious contender for the Kentucky Derby with a powerhouse 4 ¼-length victory in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby in his first start on the dirt. He stopped the clock in 1:49.17 for 1 1/8 miles over a fast local main track, earning a 100 Beyer – the only triple-digit Beyer earned among this year's Kentucky Derby field.

Rock Your World enters the Derby 3-for-3 with earnings of $546,600 for owners Hronis Racing and Talla Racing, which acquired the bay colt as a yearling for $650,000 at the annual Keeneland September sale with bloodstock agent David Ingordo signing the ticket. Rock Your World is out of the multiple stakes-winning Empire Maker mare Charm the Maker. His first three dams are all multiple stakes winners or graded stakes winners.

“We are thrilled to have a horse like this,” added Michael Talla. “Hopefully, Rock Your World will be the son to carry on the Candy Ride sire line, and I can't think of a better place than Spendthrift for him to get the opportunity to do that.”

Rock Your World will break from post 15 and will be ridden by Joel Rosario in the Derby. Before traveling to Louisville last Sunday, he breezed five furlongs in 59.20 seconds on Apr. 24 at Santa Anita in his final serious work in preparation for Saturday.

Homebred ‘Stars’ in the Making for Spendthrift

A pair of Spendthrift Farm homebreds stamped themselves as 3-year-olds to watch for the second half of the season with recent jaw-dropping 'TDN Rising Star' performances.

Following Sea (c, 3, Runhappy–Quick Flip, by Speightstown) earned his 'Rising Star' badge with a flashy maiden win at second asking for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert on the GI Arkansas Derby undercard, good for a gaudy 97 Beyer Speed Figure.

The bay was hustled to the front by Joel Rosario in the six-furlong affair and was pressed on his inside through an opening quarter in :21.89. He began to shake clear heading into the far turn, kicked for home in complete control and was never seriously asked down the lane en route to an effortless 5 3/4-length decision.

Following Sea's final time of 1:09.92 bested the 1:10.13 final clocking posted by Edgeway (Competitive Edge) at the same distance later on the card for filly and mare sprinters in the Carousel S.

Following Sea previously crossed the line a solid second after a wide trip on debut behind stablemate and subsequent GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby fourth Defunded (Dialed In), but had his number taken down and placed third for causing interference shortly after the start at Santa Anita Mar. 6.

“We always loved him and raised him right here on the farm,” Spendthrift General Manager Ned Toffey said. “He's taken a little bit–he's a good-sized colt and had a couple of ticktack issues that kept him from running earlier. Bob was a little frustrated with his first start–he still showed some talent–but he really put it together Saturday. I loved what I saw. The way he made that move on the turn and put the race away at that point… It looked very easy. It looked very fluid. And it looked very fast. We thought something like that might be there and couldn't be happier.”

As for what's next and potentially stretching Following Sea out going forward, Toffey said:

“It's hard to know how he'll stretch out, but yes, he has the size and shape. Runhappy was definitely best sprinting, but you really never know until you try them. We're eager to find out ourselves.”

Toffey continued, “If a horse is ready to go on and make the move into much bigger company, it's always been really impressive how well Bob does that. For now, we're just gonna enjoy the win and let the horse tell Bob what he's ready to do next.”

Quick Flip–a winner of her first three starts at two, including Tampa's Sandpiper S.–was purchased by Spendthrift Farm carrying Following Sea in utero for $230,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale. She is a half-sister to the Baffert-trained SW & MGSP Qahira (Cairo Prince) and SW Stormin' Lyon (Storm Boot), and hails from the family of GISW Mitterand (Hold Your Peace).

In addition to the stakes-placed Inspeightof (Orb), Quick Flip's most recent produce includes a 2-year-old Into Mischief filly, purchased by bloodstock agent Mike Ryan for $450,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase, and a 2021 Hard Spun colt. Quick Flip will be bred back to Authentic, per Toffey.

“It looks like a bargain now,” Toffey said with a laugh of purchasing the now 12-year-old mare. “Those are always tricky–buying one in foal can really go either way. We certainly had a lot of respect for Runhappy and liked the mare's page. Thought she would be a good, useful mare for us to breed in house. We're very excited going forward.”

Missy P. (f, 3, Into Mischief–Greer Lynn, by Speightstown) was another no doubt 'Rising Star' carrying the orange-and-purple silks of B. Wayne Hughes's operation, romping by 9 1/2 lengths going 5 1/2 furlongs on debut for Hall of Famer Richard Mandella at Santa Anita Mar. 12.

The full-sister to GISW and fellow 'Rising Star' Mia Mischief forced the issue from an outside second, cruised up to challenge approaching the quarter pole and opened daylight in the stretch under a handride by Flavien Prat to win like a 2-5 shot should. She earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

Missy P. has posted three moves since her unveiling, most recently working five furlongs in :59.80 (5/22) at Santa Anita Apr. 8.

“Richard has thought about the [GII] Eight Belles [S. going seven furlongs at Churchill Downs Apr. 30] or just running her for some listed blacktype out in California,” Toffey said. “We'll see. That may be the thing to do–get her blacktype before we go bear hunting.”

He continued, “I was out in L.A. this last weekend and was able to see her. The phrase that came to my mind watching her train was, 'coiled spring.' She's really a muscular and well-defined filly. About the time of her first start, Richard said that she weighed 1,200 pounds. That's a big horse. She just looks great. She's a good, correct filly.”

Mia Mischief, heroine of the 2019 GI Humana Distaff S. at Churchill Downs, was sold by Spendthrift for $135,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. She later brought $300,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Florida Select 2-Year-Old and $2.4 million from Stonestreet as a horse of racing age/broodmare prospect at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale.

“Missy P. is much more substantial and much more powerful,” Toffey said. “That's saying a lot because Mia Mischief was a really stout, well-made muscular filly herself.”

Having Missy P. join Spendthrift's racing stable wasn't always the plan. She was scratched from the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale after getting cast in her stall, Toffey said.

“She's one that we may have dodged a bullet on,” Toffey said. “She just was a little off behind when we were getting very close to needing to ship her up to the sale. We always felt very good about her being fine, but you couldn't take one like that to sell.”

Missy P.'s dam Greer Lynn, a winner of one of four career starts for Hughes, is a daughter of the fantastic producer Roll Over Baby (Rollin On Over), dam of GSWs Roll Hennessy Roll (Hennessy) and Sing Baby Sing (Unbridled's Song); MSW & GSP Majorbigtimesheet (Carson City); SW & MGISP Value Plus (Unbridled's Song); and MGSP Werblin (Unbridled's Song).

Greer Lynn was acquired privately by Spendthrift after RNA'ing for $400,000 as a Keeneland November weanling.

“She essentially was a failed pinhook,” Toffey said. “We bought her with the intention of flipping her back in a yearling sale. She just didn't grow and wasn't at a real impressive stage as a yearling, so we kept her and put her into training. Again, like a lot of horses, we always felt like there was plenty of talent there, but she just had some minor things that kept her from really demonstrating it. She was always a beautiful mare and kind of a classic, Speightstown type. We bred her to a lot of horses in house and maybe we didn't always give her the best opportunity to be successful, but Into Mischief is pretty good at righting those wrongs.”

Sent to leading sire War Front by Spendthrift, Geer Lynn brought $700,000 from SF Bloodstock at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, then switched hands again at the 2020 Keeneland November Sale, bringing $750,000 from Summer Wind Equine. Greer Lynn is also represented by a 2-year-old Goldencents filly, purchased by bloodstock agent Mike Ryan for $300,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase, and a Medaglia d'Oro colt of this year. She aborted her 2020 War Front foal.

In addition to the aforementioned Mia Mischief, the Into Mischief/Speightstown cross is also responsible for recent GI Carter H. winner Mischevious Alex and MGSW Engage.

Fast Times At OBS: Into Mischief’s Runners Dominate Breeze Shows

Into Mischief's standing as one of North America's elite sires is well established, both in the sales ring and on the racetrack. As the numbers show, the resident of Spendthrift Farm is just as exemplary in the space between.

From 2015 to 2020, a total of 1,335 juveniles breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 seconds flat or faster during the three primary 2-year-olds in training sales hosted by Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. Into Mischief led all sires in that time span with 51, which was more than double his next-closest contemporary.

Twirling Candy of Lane's End came in second with 23, while fellow Lane's End resident Quality Road tied with Claiborne Farm's Flatter with 20.

The six seasons counted in the sample feature Into Mischief's fourth through ninth crops, tracing his ascent as he blossomed into an upper-tier stallion and eventually got comfortable in the penthouse.

Explaining why Into Mischief has so drastically distanced himself from the rest of the field in this statistic can venture down a few different threads.

The first is a simple numbers game. Though he had just 35 total foals in the first sampled crop, the juveniles of 2015, his popularity exploded in the ensuing seasons, giving him one of the busiest books in North America.

From his 2014 foal crop (juveniles of 2016) to 2018 (juveniles of 2020), Into Mischief never saw less than 157 live foals in a given crop, and his final year in the snapshot topped him out at 201 foals. With that many opportunities to produce :10-and- under runners, the chances improve that the stallion will get them.

Of course, putting an army of foals under tack doesn't matter if they can't take advantage of those numbers and hit the mark on the stopwatch.

Spendthrift Farm general manager Ned Toffey said the stallion has proven himself uniquely capable of producing juveniles that are not only ready to perform physically at that stage in their development, but mentally.

“They tend to be good-minded,” he said. “They obviously tend to be fast, and I think they tend to stand up to training. There's just so much natural speed there that it's not hard for them to do that kind of thing. That natural ability, combined with soundness and a good mind, I think that really helps them perform that way.”

That mental fortitude and natural ability was also noted by Jimbo Gladwell of consignor Top Line Sales, who consigned two by Into Mischief at this year's OBS March Sale. The process of building up a young horse up to breeze the fastest furlong of its life can be too much for some prospects, but Gladwell said the Into Mischiefs have handled the pressure.

“They have a high cruising speed, which is one of the things that makes them so successful,” Gladwell said. “They have a quick turn of foot. The mind that goes with them is conducive with what they do.”

A big-time breeze often carries with it the stigma that the horse has left its best effort at the sale and may have peaked too early, but the Into Mischiefs that have hit the :10-and-under threshold have performed well, as a group, going against that notion.

Among Into Mischief's notable :10-and-under sale graduates are Grade 2 winner Engage, Grade 3 winners Mischevious Alex and Gas Station Sushi, and stakes winners Claire's Song, Into Mystic, and Offspring. All of the horses on that list won stakes races at three or older, which is a trend Toffey said he expects will roll on as Into Mischief's stock continues to rise.

“I think you're seeing it more and more with all the good horses he's got on the Derby trail this year,” Toffey said. “It's been talked about in the breed for a long time; that precocity, brilliance – in other words speed – and that ability to carry it. He is one that I think for a long time, people thought was just the speed there, but I think you're seeing it as he's being bred to classier mares, he's more than capable of getting a classic horse.”
