MGSW By My Standards Retired to Spendthrift

Allied Racing's MGSW By My Standards (Goldencents–A Jealous Woman, by Muqtarib) has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Spendthrift Farm, standing the 2022 breeding season for a fee of $7,500 S&N.

“By My Standards came up with a quarter crack that was going to force us to miss the rest of our goals before the breeding season, so the decision was made for him to retire,” explained Chester Thomas, owner and manager of Allied Racing Stable. “It's a bittersweet day because this is a special horse who deserved to win a Grade I and was very unlucky not to. However, I'm proud he is retiring happy and healthy, and I couldn't be more excited about him going to Spendthrift where he'll get the best opportunity to become a great sire, just like his sire and grandsire there.”

Spendthrift General Manager Ned Toffey added, “We are thrilled to be able to stand By My Standards and are thankful to Chester for the opportunity. Obviously, this is a sire line we know very well and just have tremendous confidence in. By My Standards really embodies the heart and ability that have become so signature to the Into Mischief line. In fact, only his sire Goldencents and Authentic [both standing at Spendthrift] have higher earnings than By My Standards among all the great racehorses from the Into Mischief sire line.”

Trained by Bret Calhoun, the $150,000 OBS juvenile purchase broke his maiden and followed up with a score in the GII Louisiana Derby, winning over eventual GI Kentucky Derby winner Country House and GI Preakness S. winner War of Will. At four, he captured his first three starts of the year, including the GII New Orleans Classic at Fair Grounds and the GII Oaklawn H. and subsequently added a victory in the GII Alysheba S. at Churchill Downs. He also was runner-up in Saratoga's GI Whitney H. and GII Stephen Foster S. This term, the 5-year-old won the Oaklawn Mile before finishing runner-up in the GI Met Mile at Belmont. He retires to Spendthrift with a record of seven wins and five seconds from 17 starts and earnings of $2,294,430.

By My Standards will participate in Spendthrift's “Share The Upside” breeding program for a fee of $8,500 for one year. Additionally, breeders must breed one mare in 2023 on a complimentary basis. After the breeder has a live foal in 2023, pays the stud fee, and breeds a mare back, he or she will earn a lifetime breeding right beginning in 2024.

“Everyone who got in on the Share The Upside program for Into Mischief and Goldencents has enjoyed a lot of success, and we believe By My Standards is the next in line,” said Toffey. “I invite all breeders to come out and see him during the November sales, as he will be available for inspection immediately and will be shown Nov. 10-19 daily from 1-3pm.”

Lord Nelson Euthanized

Spendthrift Farm's MGISW Lord Nelson (Pulpit–African Jade by Seeking the Gold) was euthanized Thursday after a long battle with laminitis. He was 9-years-old.

“Upon consulting with a veterinarian team consisting of Dr. Scott Morrisson, Dr. Jim Morehead, and Dr. Caleb Harms and our stallion manager Wayne Howard, it was determined that the only humane course of action we had was to euthanize Lord Nelson following his latest difficult battle with laminitis,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift's general manager. “It's pretty well chronicled his long fight with the disease. After several encouraging years, it unfortunately caught up with him and we couldn't allow him to suffer after we had run out of medical options.”

He continued, “It is a very sad day at Spendthrift. Lord Nelson was an unbelievably courageous horse and I think he'll always be remembered by the entire team at Spendthrift and anyone who ever got to be around him. Just a very special animal and we will miss him.”

Lord Nelson won seven of his 13 starts for trainer Bob Baffert and Spendthrift, earning $958,271. The flashy chestnut closed his career with a trio of Grade I victories in the Triple Bend S., Bing Crosby S. and Santa Anita Sprint Championship S. in 2016. He was forced to miss that year's Breeders' Cup and the 2017 breeding season with a leg infection became laminitis. Lord Nelson's oldest foals are 2-year-olds and he currently has three winners.

Spendthrift Farm Announces 2022 Fees: Into Mischief At $250,000; Yaupon Enters Stud At $30,000

Spendthrift Farm has announced stud fees for its roster of 25 stallions set to stand at the Lexington-based farm for the upcoming 2022 breeding season, led again by North America's reigning two-time champion General Sire, Into Mischief who will stand for $250,000 S&N.

Spendthrift has added four new stallions for 2022 including recently retired Grade 1 winners Basin, Known Agenda and Yaupon, along with multi-millionaire By My Standards who remains in training through the end of the racing season.

“It is important to us that we continue to offer breeders both quality and value at all levels of the market, and we believe our 2022 stallion roster and fees reflect that,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “We are very encouraged by a lot of positive indicators in the commercial yearling market, including strong sales numbers and high clearance rates. There has been good health at the sales, and breeders have had the chance to make money. Our aim is to provide opportunity for every breeder so that he or she can have confidence in being rewarded by the quality and value we offer.”

Yaupon, winner of last month's Forego S. (G1) at Saratoga, heads the new stallions with an introductory fee of $30,000 S&N. The Uncle Mo colt recently retired with earnings of $703,264. Known Agenda, this year's Florida Derby (G1) winner by Curlin, will stand for $10,000 S&N, and Basin, winner of the Hopeful S. (G1) at two, will stand for $7,500 S&N. A fee for By My Standards will be set upon retirement.

Popular second-season sire Authentic, the reigning Horse of the Year by Into Mischief, will stand for $70,000 S&N in 2022, down slightly from his introductory fee. Omaha Beach joins Yaupon at $30,000, also down slightly from the previous breeding season.

Bolt d'Oro, whose first yearlings have been well-received this summer to the tune of a $179,757 sales average, will see a slight increase in his fee to $20,000 S&N. Vino Rosso, the 2019 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) hero and champion by Curlin, will also stand for $20,000 S&N, down slightly for his third season at stud.

Spendthrift's stallions under $20,000 are led by multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Vekoma who will stand his second season at stud for a reduced fee of $17,500 S&N. Emerging sire Goldencents and champion Mitole both remain at $15,000 S&N, and Jimmy Creed and Lord Nelson both remain at $10,000 S&N.

Three stallions will participate in Spendthrift's “Safe Bet” program in 2022, including Cloud Computing ($5,000), Free Drop Billy ($5,000) and Mor Spirit ($5,000). All three will have their first respective 2-year-olds hitting the track, and the program ensures them siring a graded stakes winner in 2022 or no stud fee is owed for that respective stallion.

Spendthrift is planning for open houses to return, starting during the Fasig-Tipton October sale. Stallions are also available for inspection upon appointment from 1-3pm most days.

Into Mischief to Stand for $250,000 in 2022

Leading stallion Into Mischief will stand the 2022 season for $250,000, Spendthrift Farm announced Tuesday evening. The stallion, who is enjoying another standout season on the racetrack and in the sales ring, stood for $225,000 in 2021.

Spendthrift has added four new stallions for 2022, including recently retired Grade I winners Basin, Known Agenda and Yaupon, along with multi-millionaire By My Standards who remains in training through the end of the racing season. The new additions bring the farm's roster to 25 stallions.
