Native Trail To Face 14 In The Guineas

Godolphin's unbeaten champion juvenile Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) heads a field of 15 for Saturday's G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, with William Buick on board as expected leaving the fellow Charlie Appleby-trained Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) to be ridden by James Doyle. Drawn at opposite sides, the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Dewhurst S. hero Native Trail is in 15 with his G3 Autumn S.-winning stablemate in one with a field split always a possibility in this race. Ballydoyle's unbeaten G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy winner Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) will break under Ryan Moore from stall four, with the operation's TDN Rising Star Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in 11 with Aidan O'Brien snapping up Frankie Dettori. The master of Rosegreen withdrew Glounthaune (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), while the three others taken out were Angel Bleu (Fr)  (Dark Angel {Ire}), Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) and Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Looking for a pace scenario at this stage, it could be that low numbers are the place to be with Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's Royal Patronage (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who beat Coroebus in the course-and-distance G2 Royal Lodge S., set to exit from stall six. Another high-profile runner drawn low is Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. winner Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) in three.

Native Still On The Winning Trail

He was 1-4 and there were no anxious moments as Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream (GB) simply turned up and repeated his juvenile antics in Wednesday's G3 bet365 Craven S. at Newmarket. Taking some strides to organise himself as he had on this track and the July Course at two, the G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Dewhurst S.-winning European champion juvenile got motoring out of the “dip” to brush aside the long-time leader Star of India (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and score by 3 1/2 lengths from the promising course maiden winner Claymore (Fr) (New Bay {GB}). “That was a perfect trial–they went a nice pace,” jockey William Buick said. “Everyone had been delighted with him at home and it was a proper trial.” Charlie Appleby added, “He has a big round action, but races economically and the right way round. He really comes up the rising ground and keeps finding all the way to the line. He was two kilos heavier today than he was in the Dewhurst and I'm a big believer that they should be the same weight going into the Guineas than they were then. At 540 kilos, he's the same weight as Adayar and Hurricane Lane. His racing brain has clicked in now and he saw the mile out well there.”

With Ryan Moore intent on keeping Star of India honest from the outset and Adam Kirby allowing Claymore to stride forward along with Rob Hornby on Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}), it was clear from an early stage that this was not to be in any way tactical. Students of Native Trail would have known not to allow the blood pressure to rise a fraction when he was first pushed along by Buick, who is owning the Craven meeting at present, and by the two pole as he emerged in the line of contenders it was a case of accepting the inevitable. In beating a clutch of raw if deeply promising types in straightforward manner in a solid time, this proved little more than he has retained all his ability and that he stays the mile well but neither of those would have been under question to begin with. Whether he can ward off the likes of stablemate Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Ballydoyle's Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in two Saturdays' time is a different matter, but his attitude, experience and advantageous stride length will ensure he is heavily favoured to do so.

Claymore, who had impressed when winning his sole start here in October, is due to sidestep a second encounter with the winner and wait two more weeks for the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulain at ParisLongchamp. “Adam said mentally he'll come on and he is having a good blow, so there is improvement everywhere,” trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam said. “I would say it'll be the French for him.”

If Native Trail is to win a Guineas, he will exceed the achievements of some prominent family members whose lights had blazed during their first season but had gone out by the month of May of their second. They include the unraced dam's full-sister Helleborine (GB) (Observatory), her asteroid-like son Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and another full-sibling's daughter Fair Eva (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Given that this Juddmonte dynasty also involves the unbeaten juvenile and ultimately-disappointing Distant Music, it would have been a relief for the team to see Native Trail come back as strong at three. One immediate family member who did go on to excel later as a 3-year-old was the dam Needleleaf's full-sister African Rose (GB), winner of the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup, and there is no indication that this winner's torch will die out any time soon.

Godolphin paid €950,000 at last year's Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale for the winner's half-sister Tranquil Rose (Fr) by the sire of the aforementioned G2 Coventry S. winner Calyx, who is set to be one of Coolmore's most exciting young sires. This the family features the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, GI Washington D.C. International and GI Suburban H.-winning champion Vanlandingham (Cox's Ridge), the GII Keeneland Turf Mile and G2 Prix Eugene Adam-winning sire Kirkwall (GB) (Selkirk) and the GI American Oaks heroine Funny Moon (Malibu Moon). Also connected to the GI Belmont S. hero and sire Temperence Hill, Needleleaf's yearling filly is by Siyouni (Fr).

On The Trail Again

Charlie Appleby has two strong hands to play in the upcoming 2000 Guineas and one of them, the European champion juvenile Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream (GB), enjoys a surprise if welcome prep in Wednesday's G3 bet365 Craven S. at Newmarket. It's the age-old question, can the one who was at the apex the previous year maintain his dominion after the winter sojourn? It is necessary to go back to the mid-nineties and the likes of Alhaarth (Ire) (Unfuwain) and Xaar (GB) (Zafonic) to recall reigning champions taking in this trial en route to the first Classic and Godolphin's chief sophomore provides the race with a shot in the arm. There is nothing in his trainer's recent emissions to suggest that he has any concerns about the G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Dewhurst S. hero, with this being more of a wake-up call than anything else.

“We are very confident at the moment and the team is in good form,” he said. “He has wintered very well and we have been pleased with his preparation, so we don't have any negatives going into this. It's only two and a half weeks until the 2000 Guineas, so we feel he is not going to need the run in the Craven, but it will help click his racing brain back into gear. It's of more benefit mentally rather than physically.”

TDN Rising Stars Assembling

Taking on Native Trail are two TDN Rising Stars in Star of India (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Al Mubhir (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who represent Ballydoyle and William Haggas respectively. The former took the eye when scoring on debut over seven furlongs at Leopardstown in October, while Al Mubhir beat a clutch of subsequent winners in a maiden over that trip on this course earlier that month.

Tom Marquand takes the mount on Al Mubhir and said, “He is a beautiful model, but he has done well for having that break. It is a stiff task second time out to try and win a Craven, but there is a reason he is in there and that is because William likes him and the team likes him. Our lad will be learning on the job a little bit and hopefully we will learn a bit more about him at the same time and what will be will be with Native Trail.”

A River Runs Through It

In the six-furlong G3 Connaught Access Flooring Abernant S., Al Shaqab Racing's Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) is the main player following his success in the G1 Phoenix S. at The Curragh in August. With no stand-out older sprinter in attendance, Hugo Palmer's stable star will be a warm order to get his campaign off to a flyer.

“We've decided to put a line through trying to make him stay, but I'm just really looking forward to running him at Newmarket. It wouldn't surprise me if we ended up going back to five for the King's Stand if he's good enough.”

Appleby Outlines Plans For His Stable Stars

Last year's G1 Cazoo Derby and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) will return in the June 3 G1 Coronation Cup S., Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby revealed on Saturday. Fourth in the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, one place behind stablemate Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in October, the strapping bay ended his season with a fifth after racing too freely in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. on Oct. 16.

“Going forward the plan would be to start him off in the Coronation as we know he can handle the track, so he's ticked one box, and the trip,” Appleby said. “So he'll head to the Coronation and hopefully we'll look towards the King George again and if we're lucky enough to tick one of those boxes then the view will be taken by myself and the team whether to contemplate coming back in trip and taking in the Juddmonte International.

“Hurricane Lane has stamina in abundance, while this lad has won a Derby and a King George, as he's got stronger he's got quicker. This time last year he was still very raw, now he's mentally in a very good place and physically I cannot fault him. He's a year older and a year wiser and he's a true professional now.”

Victorious in the G2 Dante S. in May prior to his Derby third in June, Hurricane Lane then rattled off wins in the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby later that month and in the July 14 G1 Grand Prix de Paris. He added another Classic to his haul with a win in the Sept. 11 G1 Cazoo St Leger at Doncaster one start before his Arc placing. His long-term goal will be another crack at the ParisLongchamp showpiece.

Added, Appleby, “Hurricane Lane had a tough season but he's thrived through the winter and we're very much working back from the Arc this year. “The plan is to head to the [G2] Hardwicke [S.] at Royal Ascot first, potentially the [G1] Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud [on July 3] and then a trial for the Arc.

“He's just starting to pick his work up now and we're looking forward to Royal Ascot and seeing him in action in the Hardwicke. He's going to be a force to be reckoned with this year, the one thing about him is his versatility.”

Fresh off a strong second in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic, GI Breeders' Cup Turf hero Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is bound Stateside and will likely be engaged in the GI Man o' War S. at Belmont Park.

“He'll have an international campaign, we've earmarked the Man o' War S. at Belmont in the middle of May and if we get a result there we could look at something like the [GI] Sword Dancer [upstate at Saratoga].”

Trio of Classic Hopefuls Lining Up

There are a few colts sporting the royal blue headed for G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas pointers from Moulton Paddocks, and they are led by 2021 Cartier Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). A flawless four-for-four, the colt broke his maiden at first asking, before running out the victor in the July 10 G2 bet365 Superlative S. and the G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. at The Curragh on Sept. 12. His 2021 finale was a two-length victory in the G1 Darley Dewhurst S. at Newmarket on Oct. 9.

“It's not the first time we've had a champion 2-year-old but the one thing missing off the Moulton Paddocks CV is a 2000 Guineas winner,” Appleby reflected.

“Native Trail was a man against boys last year. As some of the old school used to say, the Guineas can be the last 2-year-old race of the year and if the Guineas was next week I'd be pretty confident he'd be a stride in front of the crew at the moment.

Another pointing for the first colts' Classic of the year in the UK is the G3 Emirates Autumn S. hero Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). He will return in the G3 Greenham S. on Apr. 16, while Native Trail will head for the G3 Craven S. three days earlier.

“We'll look to the Craven with Native Trail and the Greenham with Coroebus. Both of them have won on the Rowley Mile so that won't be an excuse,” said Appleby. “Coroebus has a lot of pace so running him in the Greenham will hopefully help him race the right way round.

“After the Guineas we'll decide if one goes to Ireland and one goes to the [G1] St James's Palace [S. at Royal Ascot] or if they both go to the St James's Palace or if one wants stepping up in trip.”

Appleby added of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), “Modern Games will head to Newcastle for the Burradon S. If we're lucky enough to achieve what we hope to achieve in the other trials then he might go to France or even Ireland.”
