John Von Stade, Former President Of National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame, Passes At Age 83

John T. von Stade, whose 17-year tenure as president of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame from 1989 through 2005 is the longest in the institution's history, died Nov. 25 at his home in Lutherville, Md., after a lengthy illness. He was 83.

“John will be missed tremendously,” said Cate Masterson, the Museum's director. “He had such a passion for racing, the arts, and the Museum in particular. He contributed in so many ways and we will all miss his kindness and generosity.”

Born in Old Westbury, N.Y., on June 28, 1938, Mr. von Stade was the youngest of F. Skiddy and Katherine von Stade's eight children. He graduated from St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H., and Harvard University, developing his passion for music and art at both schools. A bass baritone, Mr. von Stade participated in and managed the choir at St. Paul's and the glee club at Harvard. Following his college graduation, Mr. von Stade attended the Aspen School of Music and served in the Army Reserves. He then spent some time in the banking world before opening the Essex Gallery of Sport in Far Hills, N.J.

Participating in Thoroughbred racing was a natural fit for Mr. von Stade. His father was a founder of the National Museum of Racing in 1950, president of the National Steeplechase Association, and the final president of the Saratoga Association, which owned and operated Saratoga Race Course before its assimilation into what is now the New York Racing Association. In his youth, John von Stade drove a tractor at Saratoga Race Course, harrowing the track between races.

Partaking for a brief time in Thoroughbred ownership, Mr. von Stade partnered in the small Ivy Creek Stable with his friend Charlie Mellon. A couple of the stable's horses were steeplechasers, which led to Mr. von Stade's relationship with New Jersey's Far Hills Race Meeting and the National Steeplechase Association. For 50 years, Mr. von Stade served as co-chair at Far Hills, helping develop an event that early in its history attracted a few thousand spectators into the country's richest day of steeplechasing, with more than 50,000 attending and millions of dollars raised for charity. He did everything from bedding stalls in the stables to putting up snow fencing at first, and then managing hundreds of volunteers and set the fixture's course as it grew.

“He was an art lover, a historian. He was like an old school guy, but he managed to change with the times,” said the National Steeplechase Association's Guy Torsilieri, who spent 35 years leading the Far Hills Races with Mr. von Stade. “He had an incredible way about him, so gentle and focused. He knew which way things needed to go and should go.”

Torsilieri added that Mr. von Stade was the “fabric and the glue” that held things together between the races and the foundation that donates to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville, N.J. It is the home of the Steeplechase Cancer Center and the von Stade Lobby, built on $18 million raised from the Far Hills racing proceeds.

After serving for more than a decade as a trustee of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Mr. von Stade was elected as its president in 1989, succeeding Whitney Tower. During his time as president of the Museum, Mr. von Stade oversaw an $18 million project that modernized the institution and increased the size of the facility to more than 45,000 square feet. Following his presidency, Mr. von Stade remained a Museum trustee and served on various committees.

In 1995, Mr. von Stade was selected to receive the F. Ambrose Clark Award — the highest honor in steeplechasing — which is given periodically to an individual who has done the most to promote, improve, and encourage the growth and welfare of American steeplechasing.

A longtime boxholder at Saratoga Race Course, Mr. von Stade resided in New Jersey and Saratoga Springs until moving to Maryland six years ago. He was a member of the Porcellian Club at Harvard, the Knickerbocker Club in New York City. the Racquet Club of New York City, and for many years, served as president of the Somerset Medical Center Foundation in New Jersey.

Mr. von Stade is survived by his wife, the former Phyllis Kaltenbach DuVal; his son, John von Stade, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Ann von Stade; Phyllis's daughters and son-in-law, Anna DuVal, Olivia Duval, and Joseph Cutrone; grandchildren Lily, Talbot, and Charlie von Stade, and Orlando, Sophia, and Nico Cutrone. He was also the proud uncle of numerous nephews and nieces, among these opera singer Frederica von Stade.

Services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Owings Mills, Md.

National Museum Of Racing And Hall of Fame’s Third Annual Photo Finish Exhibition Opens Friday

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's 3rd annual Photo Finish: Juried Photography Exhibition will open in the Museum's von Stade Gallery on Friday in conjunction with Breeders' Cup weekend. Since its inception, the Museum's juried photography exhibition program has received submissions from photographers hailing from 27 states and three Canadian provinces.

This year's exhibition features 45 photographs by 34 photographers from 12 states. An additional 14 photographs will be included in the online exhibition as online-only entries, bringing the total representation of the 3rd annual Photo Finish exhibition to 14 states (California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin). The selected photographs document the entire racing experience, from the farm to the backstretch to the winner's circle, including several images that showcase how Covid-19 impacted the racing world in 2020. The online exhibition will be available on the Museum's website at: https://racingmuseum.org/exhibits/photo-finish-juried-photography-exhibition.

Each year, the Museum invites amateur and professional photographers to submit photographs for consideration. The only requirement is that each submitted photograph must relate to the sport of thoroughbred racing in North America. A panel of judges representing both the racing and arts communities selects the photographs for exhibition. This year's jurors included Louise Kerr (Executive Director, Saratoga Arts), Shannon Luce (Director of Communications, The Jockey Club), Skip Dickstein (Eclipse Award-winning photographer), Sally Jeffords (National Museum of Racing trustee, chair of the Collections & Exhibits Committee), and Cate Masterson (Director, National Museum of Racing).

The 3rd annual Photo Finish: Juried Photography Exhibition will remain on display through Feb. 20, 2022. The call for submissions for the 4th annual exhibition will be announced in early 2022.

Team Tiz The Law, Artist Montgomery To Sign Travers Stakes Posters On Aug. 24

Renowned equine artist Greg Montgomery and the connections of 2020 Travers Stakes winner Tiz the Law — jockey Manny Franco, trainer Barclay Tagg, and Sackatoga Stable operating manager Jack Knowlton — will sign copies of Montgomery's 2021 Travers Stakes poster on Tuesday, Aug. 24 at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. This year's poster, which is the 36th in Montgomery's iconic series honoring the Travers, features Tiz the Law winning the 151st edition of the Midsummer Derby. Posters will be available for purchase for $50.

Exactly one year after winning his career debut at Saratoga Race Course, Tiz the Law returned to the famous Spa oval with a 5½-length victory in the 2020 Travers with Franco in the irons. The New York-bred son of Constitution entered the Travers following victories in the Belmont Stakes, Florida Derby, and Holy Bull Stakes. Tiz the Law was retired earlier this year with a career record of 6-1-1 from nine starts and earnings of $2,735,300. He is now a stallion at Coolmore America in Kentucky.

Franco, who currently ranks No. 9 among North American jockeys with earnings of more than $8.8 million this year, has won 1,556 races in a career that began in 2013. Along with the Travers and Belmont, his top victories include the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, Diana Stakes, Sword Dancer, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Fourstardave Handicap, Frizette Stakes, and Vosburgh Stakes, among others.

Tagg has won 1,595 races in his distinguished career, including all three Triple Crown events. He won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes with Sackatoga's champion Funny Cide in 2003 and completed his career sweep of the American Classics when Tiz the Law won the Belmont in 2020. Along with Funny Cide and Tiz the Law, Tagg has trained millionaires Showing Up, Nobiz Like Shobiz, and Tale of Ekati

Knowlton has served as Sackatoga's operating manager since 1995. He has also contributed to the thoroughbred racing community in New York and nationally, serving as a member of the NTRA Jockey Insurance Working Group, as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Future of Racing in New York State, and on New York State's Task Force on Retired Race Horses. He also played a leadership role in assisting the New York State Gaming Commission in organizing Aftercare Summits in Saratoga Springs in 2015 and 2016. Under Knowlton's leadership, Sackatoga Stable has consistently been a supporter of various aftercare organizations, including Old Friends at Cabin Creek and Equine Advocates.

Montgomery has been producing artwork associated with Saratoga Race Course's famed Travers Stakes since 1986. The annual Travers posters represent the longest continuing series of art featuring a single event by a single artist in racing history. Montgomery has worked as an art director for General Electric and Capital Region Magazine, as well as design editor for the Albany (N.Y.) Times Union. In 2008, he published the book “The History and Art of 25 Travers” along with writer Vic Zast. In 2015, his Travers series was featured in an exhibit at the National Museum of Racing, entitled Greg Montgomery: 30 years of the Travers

Montgomery's Travers poster series has been inspired by the rich history of the Travers Stakes, the first race contested on Saratoga Race Course's opening day on Aug. 2, 1864. Named in honor of William R. Travers, the first president of the Saratoga Association, the inaugural Travers Stakes was won by future Hall of Fame member Kentucky, a horse Travers owned in partnership.

One of the most prestigious races in America, the Travers has been won by Thoroughbred immortals such as Hall of Famers Buckpasser, Damascus, Easy Goer, Eight Thirty, Hindoo, Holy Bull, Native Dancer, Man o' War, and Twenty Grand. A total of 24 Hall of Fame racehorses have won the Travers.
