ThoroughBid March Catalogue Available

The 37-lot ThoroughBid March Sale catalogue is now online. Set for Mar. 3 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on the ThoroughBid online platform, the sale features several entries from Ronan McNally including the 2020 Troytown winner The Jam Man (Ire) (Papal Bull {GB}) (lot 5) and Grade 2 scorer Dreal Deal (Ire) (Arvico {Fr}) (lot 17).

Besides the horses-in-training, broodmares, and other young stock, there are also breeding rights available in Legends Of War (lot 28), Roseman (Ire) (lot 32) and established stallion Charming Thought (GB) (lot 36).

James Richardson, CEO of ThoroughBid, said, “We are delighted with the March Sale's offerings–our most varied mixed sale yet with the exciting additions of breeding rights to three quality UK-based stallions.

“It's also great to be entrusted by a trainer with another set of quality horses, like The Jam Man and Dreal Deal. These are two classy dual-purpose horses who'll give their new connections plenty of great days ahead and could be aimed at the spring festivals”

“With plenty of black-type running through the catalogue, the broodmare and young stock entries have some great potential and we're very much looking forward to seeing how they sell and what they go on to do with their new connections.

“Our £5,000 Point2Rules Bonus is a really valuable incentive for buyers and, as so many of Britain and Ireland's top horses start out in Point-to-Points, it's a highly achievable bonus.”

Fifty Stars Welcomes First Foals

Fifty Stars (Ire) (Sea the Stars (Ire)–Swizzle Stick (Ire), by Sadler's Wells) has welcomed his first foals as he starts his second season at Sunnyhill Stud in partnership with Jack Cantillon's Bloodstock Racing. The Group 1-winner did his best running in Australia but now stands in the northern hemisphere at the National Hunt stud.

“I'm going to be looking everywhere I can to find more mares for Fifty Stars on the basis of his first foal out of Lady Breffni (Ire) (Yeats {Ire}). We bought Grade 2 winning Lady Breffni to launch our Syndicates.Racing breeding syndicate and our owners have been rewarded with a tank of a filly–she looks like she could run in a point to point by Christmas,” said Cantillon. ” We've been struck this year by breeders really waking up to the opportunity to breed to Sea The Star's only Group 1 winning son that won a Group race over less than a mile–something not even Baaeed, Crystal Ocean or Stravarius could do and they don't stand for €3,000! Micheal Hickey's phone is going to be very busy if foals keep coming out like her.”

Walk In The Park Colt Tops February National Hunt Sale

A colt by Walk In The Park (Ire) led the way with a €49,000 final bid at Tuesday's one-day February National Hunt Sale at Fairyhouse. Sold by Walshtown Stables on behalf of breeder Liam Flavin, lot 109, who is out of Be Mine Tonight (Ire), was purchased by pinhooker Dick Frisby.

Consignor Donie Murphy said, “We always thought he was a nice sort, this is the right sale for him as he was a June foal. The mare is three from three and there are a few more from her to run. We had plenty of interest yesterday and were very busy. We are very happy.”

The day's session finished on a similar level to 2022–the median of €8,500 and the average of €12,451 saw a marginal drop, and the turnover of €1,624,500, from a 21-lot leaner catalogue than in 2022.

“The focus today was clearly on quality with strong competition for the better yearlings from a large group of pinhookers who turned out in force at the first sale of the year at Tattersalls Ireland,” said Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins.

“Figures held up well with the average dropping ever so slightly to €12,451 and a median of €8,500. The top of the market was strong with 13 yearlings selling for €30,000 or more and those with sought after individuals were well rewarded.”
