Enable Could Make One More Start On British Champions Day

After a disappointing sixth over soggy ground in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Juddmonte's Enable could make one more start before closing out her star-studded career. According to the Racing Post, the 6-year-old daughter of Nathaniel is under consideration for the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes over 1 1/2 miles on Oct. 17 at Ascot.

Trainer John Gosden told racingpost.com: “Enable did one canter on Warren Hill this morning and seems fine after her trip to Paris. Whether she runs again or not is up to her owner Prince Khalid Abdullah and I think a decision about her future will be made after the weekend.”

Enable won two editions of the Arc, in 2017 and 2018, then finished second in 2019. She won the 2018 Breeders' Cup Turf, and three editions of the Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes in 2017, 2019, and 2020. Overall, the mare has earned a record of 15 wins from 19 starts.

‘Arcs Are Never Easy To Win’: Frankie Dettori Talks Enable’s Chances In Fourth Arc De Triomphe

Champion racemare Enable will run in her fourth edition of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe next Sunday, trying to become the first horse in history to win the race three times. The 6-year-old daughter of Nathaniel won the Arc in 2017 and 2018, but finished second to Waldgeist over testing ground in 2019.

Her jockey, Frankie Dettori, talked to the Racing Post on Friday about the mare's chances to make history.

“I'm sure Enable will run her very best as she always has in the Arc but that might not be good enough with the likes of Love getting 7 lbs,” Dettori said. “The 3-year-old fillies when they are that good like Zarkava, Treve, Danedream and Enable have proved a tough nut to crack in the past.

“Arcs are never easy to win as everyone will be there as they all want to win one including the Derby winner, Love, and Stradivarius.”

Trained by John Gosden, Enable won the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Group 3 September Stakes this year. Her current record stands at 12 wins from 15 starts, including the 2018 Breeders' Cup Turf.

Though the Arc is a “Win and You're In” for the Breeders' Cup Turf, it is expected to be Enable's final race before her retirement to the breeding shed.

Next Stop, Paris: Enable Cruises To Easy Victory In September Stakes

Juddmonte's superstar racemare Enable made it look easy in the G3 September Stakes on Saturday at Kempton Park, cruising to victory under regular rider Frankie Dettori. It was her final prep for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, in which the 6-year-old daughter of Nathaniel will try to become the first horse in history to win the history race three times.

The John Gosden-trained Enable won the Arc in 2017 and 2018, but fell just short when second in 2019.

“All roads lead to Longchamp,” Dettori told racingpost.com. “We came here to do the job, she felt good and the dream is still alive.”

Enable has won 15 of her 18 lifetime starts, including the 2018 Breeders' Cup Turf, and has earnings over US$14 million. The Arc is a “Win and You're In” for this year's Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland.

“What she's done already with all the races she's won is pretty extraordinary, so we'll just build it up one day at a time,” Gosden said. “Frankie was delighted with her. She's had a good blow, had a nice day out and got a bit of freshness off her.”

Enable Showed ‘Zest And Desire’ In Sunday’s Coral-Eclipse Defeat By Ghaiyyath

Champion racemare Enable, kept in training for 2020 to seek a third victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, began her 6-year-old season with a strong second in Sunday's Group 1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. The John Gosden-trained Juddmonte mare was defeated 2 1/4 lengths by frontrunner Ghaiyyath, but fended off challenges from Japan, Magic Wand, and Deirdre.

“We're delighted with that, she ran a gorgeous race,” Gosden told racingpost.com. “We know about Ghaiyyath and Sandown is a great front-runner's track. We're very happy. She enjoyed it and the zest and desire was there, but trying to get involved with a front-running horse like him was never going to be her deal.”

Gosden said Enable was only 85 percent fit for Sunday's race, and jockey Frankie Dettori confirmed that the mare was a bit tired in the final 100 yards.

Up next, plans call for Enable to try for a record-setting three-peat in the King George at Ascot on July 25. The mare's major year-end target is a historic third win in the Arc, a goal she fell just short of last year when Waldgeist ran her down over the very soft ground at York.

Enable won the Arc in 2017 and 2018, and became the first horse in history to win the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Turf in the same season when she crossed the wire first at Churchill Downs in November 2018.
