LA LA MONSTRE (c, 3, Mitole–Speightastic, by Speightstown), a $390,000 KEESEP acquisition, was unplaced in a couple of tries on the grass last November and switches to the dirt for his sophomore debut. The colt's dam, a full-sister to three-time stakes winner and Grade III-placed Bayerd, was purchased by Cove Springs for $65,000 at KEENOV in 2017, and her now 2-year-old colt by Not This Time was hammered down to Repole Stable and Spendthrift Farm for $725,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. 1st-NKY, ¥10,480,000 ($71k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
AMERICAN RUNNER (c, 3, Gun Runner–Acqua Fresh (Uru), by Ecclesiastic) was a debut ninth going a mile over the Tokyo dirt last November but improved to be second with a stretch out to this trip at this venue Feb. 25. The January foal, a $125,000 Keeneland September purchase, is out of the Uruguayan champion 3-year-old filly of 2016 who changed hands for $45,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November sale. Cosmo Kuranda Punches Ticket to Japanese 2000 Guineas

Showing modest form throughout most of his career, Cosmo Kuranda (Jpn) (Al Ain {Jpn}) broke through with a convincing victory as a 33-1 outsider in Sunday's Deep Impact Kinen (Japanese 2000 Guineas Trial) at Nakayama. Supported by a single win in 2023-recorded at Niigata Oct. 29–the colt kicked off this season with a workmanlike fifth over this course and trip Jan. 8.

He settled near the back of the field early as longshot Sirius Colt (Jpn) (Makfi {GB}) cruised uncontested in front. Quickly picking off his rivals from a wide berth with 800 meters left to negotiate, the dark bay caught the pacesetter turning for home, poked his head in front midstretch and drew clear to score by 1 1/4 lengths over the fast-closing third choice Shin Emperor (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) with Sirius Colt holding on for third. Favored Trovatore (Jpn) (Rey de Oro {Jpn}) ran an even race throughout to finish sixth.

Pedigree Notes:
Cosmo Kuranda, a member Al Ain's limited first crop of runners, becomes the Japanese 2000 Guineas victor's first black-type/group winner. Dam Southern Speed posted her most important scores in the G1 Caulfield Cup and G2 Makybe Diva S. in addition to placing in three additional events at the highest level. The 17-year-old mare hails from the family of champion 3-year-old filly and G1 Golden Slipper heroine Ha Ha (Aus) (Danehill).

Having produced this colt in Kentucky in early April 2021, the half-sister to dual Group 1 scorer Mystery Train (Arg) (Not For Sale {Arg}) was bred to American Pharoah prior to her export to Japan. JAMILA NOOR (f, 3, Uncle Mo–Layla Noor, by Midnight Lute) is out of a Grade II-placed daughter of SW & MGSP Senada (Pulpit) who was purchased by Shadai Farm for $660,000 with this filly in utero at the 2020 Keeneland November Sale. Senada's half-brother Arthur's Tale (Bernardini) was runner-up in the 2011 GI Wood Memorial S., and this is also the family of SW/MGSP Gingham (Quality Road) and SW Blackadder (Quality Road).
