DUGAT (c, 3, Practical Joke–Untraveled, by Canadian Frontier), a $190K purchase by trainer Hideyuki Mori out of last year's OBS March Sale, has compiled an admirable record of 2-0-1 from four starts on the grass and enters this group debut off consecutive victories, including a narrow score going this distance at Tokyo when last seen Nov. 20 (video, SC 9). Bred on the Into Mischief cross over Gone West that has supplied Grade I winners Authentic, Mia Mischief and Mischevious Alex, Dugat was one of eight horses purchased by Mori at OBSMAR last year, a number that includes Jean Gros (More Than Ready), a $265K acquisition that won the Listed Marguerite S. BROAD REACH (JPN) (f, 3, Arrogate–Reaching {Ire}, by Dansili {GB}) was left better than 16 lengths in the wake of the hugely impressive Tahitian Dance (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) over this course and distance Dec. 18 and looks to go one better in this second go. The May 15 foal is the first Japanese produce for her dam, a close relative of champion and five-time Group 1 winner Peeping Fawn (Danehill), herself the dam of SW & MG1/GISP September (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), SW & GSP Willow (Ire) (American Pharoah) and MGSP Sir John Hawkins (Henrythenavigator). A half-sister to SW King Of the Court (Speightstown), the January foal is out of a daughter of GI Ashland S. heroine Madcap Escapade (Hennessy), whose own GI Darley Debutante S.-winning daughter Mi Sueno (Pulpit) is the dam of Japanese Group 3 winner Mi Suerte (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}). Madcap Escapade is a half-sister to Dubai Escapade (Awesome Again), a $2-million Barretts March juvenile who carried the Darley maroon-and-white to a romping victory in the 2006 GI Ballerina Breeders' Cup S. BEAT EMOTION (c, 3, Quality Road–J. Quirk, by Unbridled's Song) was hammered into 3-5 favoritism for his seven-furlong debut at Tokyo Feb. 12, but could not quite overcome the widest post and settled for a close runner-up effort (see below, SC 16). A half-brother to last year's GIII Remington Park Oaks winner Lady Mystify (Bernardini), the gray made $190K at KEESEP in 2020 and improved into a $600K Fasig-Tipton Florida breezer. ELUCIDATOR (c, 3, Hard Spun–Empire City {Jpn}, by Empire Maker) is out of an unraced half-sister to the outstanding dual Group 1-winning Japanese dirt horse Espoir City (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}), who was purchased by Hakurei Farm's Akira Katayama for $300K in foal to American Pharoah at Keeneland November in 2017. This early April produce is bred on the same cross as GI Met Mile hero and new Claiborne stallion Silver State and on a similar cross to GISW Smooth Roller. SCATTER SEED (JPN) (f, 4, Uncle Mo–Scatladybdancing, by Scat Daddy) made two trips to the post last term over this trip at Niigata, a near-miss second July 24 before graduating when last seen Aug. 7. Haruya Yoshida acquired the filly's Illinois-bred stakes-placed dam, a full-sister to SW Ultima D, for $390K with this foal in utero at KEENOV in 2017. Scatter Seed's yeay-younger half-brother Hearts As One (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), second on debut Dec. 28, goes in a Saturday maiden over 2000 meters on turf at Kokura. THE KING (JPN) (c, 3, Curlin–Alluring Star, by Exchange Rate) is the first foal from his dam, second to Caledonia Road (Quality Road) in the 2017 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and purchased by Katsumi Yoshida with this colt in utero for $925K at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale. A Jan. 28 foal, The King was offered at the 2019 JRHA Select Sale and repaid a fair bit of the investment, hammering for ¥82 million ($754,400), while the now 2-year-old half-sister by Heart's Cry (Jpn) made ¥40 million ($372,820) at the same event in 2020. The King was a useful fifth on his career debut at this venue back in September. B-Northern Racing

MOZU GOLD BARREL (f, 3, Optimizer–Sweeter Still {Ire}, by Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), a $1,500 in utero purchase at KEENOV in 2018, ran to the money in her debut to score by a measured half-length at long odds-on going 1400 meters over this course Dec. 19 (see below, SC 1). The $190K KEESEP acquisition is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Kameko (Kitten's Joy) and opts for this over Monday's sex-restricted G3 Fairy S. (see below). B-Timothy Lesley Thompson (KY)

Neither US-bred or -sired, MODICA (AUS) (f, 2, American Pharoah–More Than Real, by More Than Ready) has plenty of appeal to an American audience. The early September foal, who spots her Northern Hemisphere rivals a fair bit of maturity, is the latest produce out of Bobby Flay's 2010 GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine, who was acquired by Australian bloodstock agent James Bester for $675,000 at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton November sale. All five of the mare's previous starters are winners, including SW Miss Debutante (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Modica, an A$260,000 ($201,089) purchase out of last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, is a maternal granddaughter of MSW Miss Seffens (Dehere), whose daughter Miss Always Ready (More Than Ready) produced GI BC Juvenile Turf hero Structor (Palace Malice) and GSP 'TDN Rising Star' Always Carina (Malibu Moon). SPEED GLAMOUR (f, 3, Into Mischief–Island Escape, by Petionville) failed to run a poor race in four appearances at two and earned a crack at this level with a narrow graduation going this trip at Chukyo Dec. 5 (see below, SC 14). A half-sister to MGSW Tricky Escape (Hat Trick {Jpn}), the February-foaled bay was bought back on a bid of $250K at Keeneland September in 2020 but blossomed into a $500K purchase at last year's OBS March Sale.
