Naas Sunday: Sprinters Warm Up for Royal Ascot

by Tom Frary

Sunday's card at Naas sees some of the leading Irish sprinters build towards next month's Royal meeting, with the six-furlong G3 Goffs Lacken S. the feature. There was no mistaking the authority of the filly Ocean Quest (Ire) (Sioux Nation) in Navan's Listed Committed S. last month and although that was on heavy ground, she hails from the Jessie Harrington stable carrying all before it at the moment. Saturday's Listed Carnarvon S. placegetter Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never) and the re-opposing The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) were left behind as she opened up in the style of a group 1 performer G1 Middle Park S. runner-up and it may be that Shane Foley has finally found the key to her.

River Tiber Lined Up For Coventry Prep…
Royal Ascot's juvenile contests should take more shape after the G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint S. and opening Coolmore Stud Calyx Race, with the latter race hosting Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Stars Democracy (Ire) (No Nay Never) and River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in the line-up. Ryan Moore is booked for River Tiber, who did something out of the ordinary even for his yard's juveniles when scoring by 10 lengths on debut at Navan last month. In the Sprint S., Team Valor International and Gary Barber's acquisition Ribchestina (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) makes her debut for the Paddy Twomey stable, having scored on her introduction for Sheila Lavery here last month.

Siyouni Colt Another TDN Rising Star At Naas

There was a strong vibe about Ballydoyle's Johannes Brahms (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Illaunmore, by Shamardal) ahead of Saturday's six-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Race at Naas and he did not disappoint to show distinct promise and earn TDN Rising Star status. Jumping smartly under Seamie Heffernan to race on the front end, the 5-6 favourite was kept company by the Ger Lyons-trained fellow newcomer Tourist (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) and was briefly headed inside the two. Battling against the rail, the 200,000gns Book 1 purchase who races for Coolmore, Westerberg and Brant eked out a half-length success.

“I'd say they are two nice colts and I'd like to own either,” the winning rider said. “He was sleepy and green going to the start, is quick and is going to get quicker. When they are strong like this they can go to Ascot.” Stable representative Chris Armstrong added of the bay, whose sire's eight TDN Rising Stars include the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Tahiyra (Ire), “He's a smashing colt, he's got plenty of size about him and has a lot of class and speed. He showed a bit of greenness throughout, at home they haven't been off the bridle, and they penny hasn't dropped with this fella yet.”

“There is a lot to like about him,” Armstrong continued. “Seamus thought he had plenty of gears for a horse his size and he cruises very well. We'll try and get one more run into him before Ascot and he's one to look forward to. We thought that trip might have been his minimum but Seamus said he's versatile, five or six and he can go up further. From the three home he was never really travelling, he was a bit lost, but once Seamus got him gathered up he found the line well and kept stretching out. Once the penny drops, he should be lovely at any trip.”

Johannes Brahms becomes the second winner from as many runners and foals of racing age for the
Listed Prix de la Pepiniere and Listed Prix Urban Sea-placed Illaunmore, the leading performer out of the G3 Albany S.-placed Illaunglass (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}). She is in turn kin to the Listed Heron S. winner and G1 Criterium International-placed Redolent (Ire) (Redback {GB}) and to the listed scorer and G3 Summer S. third Pepita (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}). Also related to the G1 Flying Five runner-up Son Of Rest (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Forest Flower (Green Forest), Illaunmore's yearling filly is by Camelot (GB).

GAIN The Advantage Series Set for Third Year

GAIN The Advantage Series will continue to be supported by Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) and GAIN Equine Nutrition for the third consecutive year. Last year's series was won jointly by trainers Pat Martin and Kevin Coleman, who shared an overall league prize of €5,000 worth of GAIN equine products.

After two successful years, this year there will be an added race at Tramore Racecourse. The race will be restricted to horses owned by a syndicate or racing club to support and encourage the growth in this area, and like the other races in the series will benefit from a 50% increase in prize-money. Each trainer will receive points for their successes over the course of the series through a grading process designed to give equal opportunity to each trainer to win the overall prize. The number of points per win or placing at each leg will be based on the number of winners the trainer recorded throughout 2022.

“I think the series has grown in strength over the past two years because it acknowledges not only the owner with the increased prize-money, but also the trainer with the league table, the breeder and the hard-working stable staff,” Philip Gilligan, Irish Country Manager, GAIN Equine Nutrition, said.

The series will commence at Cork Racecourse on Apr. 21 and then proceed to Navan, Ballinrobe, Tramore, Tipperary, Killarney, Naas, and Fairyhouse with the final at Leopardstown.
