51 Eligible for Irish EBF Auction Series Race Final

Horses purchased for €1,000 up to €70,000 are among the 51 entries eligible for the €120,000 Irish EBF Auction Series Race Final at Naas Oct. 15. The Irish EBF is the largest sponsor of races in Ireland.

“It's hard to win 2-year-old races in Ireland but this series is a great initiative,” trainer Noel Meade said. “The races are worth good money and to have the final at the end of it, it really is great. It is nice to be able to say to somebody that we have these races to run in and then the final at the end. The maidens are worth €20,000 and some of them are worth €25,000 and it really is great money without running into the top sires and the very expensive 2-year-olds.”

Also, Cork Racecourse will host the €50,000 Irish EBF Auction Series Nursery H. over six furlongs. The race is one of the Auction Series finals and worth€170,000.

“The Irish EBF Auction Series, now in its ninth year, is a booming success and hitting all the targets it set out to achieve when created by the Irish EBF board and HRI,” Joe Foley, Chairman of the Irish EBF said. “The main purpose of the series was to give valuable race opportunities to horses bought at the middle to lower end of the auction market. Now trainers and owners are sourcing yearlings to target at the series and with a good horse you can win significant prize money, increase their value, sell them on or target one of the two finals available to them. It's a win-win series.”

Local Owner Dreaming Of Goffs Sportsman’s Riches At Naas With King Cuan

Connections of the Paddy Twomey-trained King Cuan (GB) have said that they are optimistic about landing the €100,000 Goffs Sportsman's Challenge at Naas on Thursday afternoon and that the What's App group has been on fire since the colt won at Cork last week.

Owned by the Red Lily Racing Syndicate, which is headed by Naas native Alan Hennessy, King Cuan will come into the lucrative sales race off the back of that extremely impressive Cork display and confidence in the camp couldn't be higher.

That win came after a 103-day absence, after which his trainer Twomey described the €21,000 Goffs Sportsman's buy as “a quick horse,” and connections are hopeful that the son of Tasleet (GB) will prove just that at their local track on Thursday.

“It has been a brilliant experience so far and we are really looking forward to Naas on Thursday,” Hennessy said.

“It all started last summer when I was approached to see if I'd be interested in a share in a horse and then King Cuan was bought at Goffs this time last year and it has just gone on from there.

“To be going to my local track for a €100,000 race is a dream come true and the WhatsApp group for the owners has been buzzing since the horse won at Cork last week.”

He added, “There are people like myself who got involved for the first time in a horse and there's others who have been involved in horses for many years so it is a great mix and great banter among the syndicate.

“We have people in from all over Ireland so it has been the perfect syndicate experience and it gives you a real taste for ownership. Last week at Cork was brilliant but Thursday looks a tough race so we'll cross our fingers and hope he runs well. Paddy has said he come out of the race in Cork in good form. The joke at the moment is that we might need the top hat and tails for Royal Ascot next year! It's only a joke at the moment but you never know!”

Champion jockey Colin Keane has been booked for the Clive Cox-trained James's Delight (Ire) (Invincible Army {Ire}) with Gavin Ryan partnering the other British-trained runner Beechwood Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) for Richard Fahey.

The first on a seven-race card on Thursday is due off at 1:55 p.m. with the Goffs Sportsman's Challenge at 3:05 p.m.

Ballyhane Stakes Attracts 28 At Latest Entry Stage

At the latest entry stage, 28 juveniles remain for the €300,000 Irish EBF Ballyhane S. at Naas on Aug. 7.

Of the 28 entries, six are British-based runners, with Jungle Mate (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}), who was bred by Ballyhane Stud, representing trainer Kevin Ryan. A winner and runner-up in two starts at Hamilton and Carlisle, respectively, the gelding worked well on Wednesday morning.

“Jungle Mate is in good form and did his final piece of work today and I was happy with him, so the plan is to run,” Ryan reported. “The ground is an unknown for him, but you never know until you run them on it and I feel he is a progressive horse who is getting stronger and stronger. It's a big prize so we will let him take his chance.

“Shane Gray will go over and ride him. Shane knows him well, has ridden him in his two races and rode him in his work this morning and has ridden in Ireland so it makes sense.

“The horse is owned by the Bronte Collection who are all friends of Steve Parkin of Clipper Logistics and are getting great fun out of the game.”

Other winners still signed on include Brighter (Fr) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}) for Aidan O'Brien, Golden Trick (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) for Hugo Palmer, Innvincible Friend (Fr) (Inns Of Court {Ire}) for Tom Dascombe, and Karl Burke's That's For Sure (Ire) (Unfortunately {Ire}).

Including this year's prize-money, the total prize fund will be over €1.2 million since 2020, and 16 trainers and 28 different owners have won prize-money to date. The Ballyhane is part of a Bank Holiday Monday card which also features the G3 Ballyroan S. for older horses, and the chance to win a trip to the Rugby World Cup. Admission to the richest race day of the year at Naas is free. For more information on Monday's card, please visit the Naas Racecourse website.
