Irish EBF Ballyhane S. Boasts 278 Entries

The €200,000 Irish EBF Ballyhane S., run at Naas on Aug. 2, has 278 juveniles entered after the latest forfeit stage, Naas Racecourse announced on Friday. Restricted to juveniles that are EBF eligible and whose sire established a median price of not more than €75,000 at the 2020 yearling sales, the race's winning breeder will receive a free nomination to one of the Ballyhane sires courtesy of Ballyhane Stud. In addition, if the winner is by a Ballyhane Stud stallion, there is a €50,000 bonus on top of the €200,000 purse. The next forfeit stage is on June 23.

Trainer Ger Lyons has several juveniles still entered in the Ballyhane S., including two by Ballyhane resident Elzaam (Aus).

“The Irish EBF are brilliant as the primary sponsor of Irish racing,” said Lyons. “Everyone in Irish racing should be very thankful to them for that.

“I will always want to have entries in a race like the Irish EBF Ballyhane Stakes with such a substantial pot. I'm only too happy to back it because it is beneficial to our owners in the long term.”

Arqana Renews Naas Sponsorship

For a second consecutive year, Arqana will sponsor the Listed Irish EBF Marwell S. at Ireland's Naas Racecourse July 21.

The inaugural Marwell S., contested in early August 2020, was won by the Ken Condon-trained Miss Amulet (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}), who won the G2 Lowther S. in her next appearance before placing in the G1 Cheveley Park Stud S. and in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf.

The announcement comes ahead of next week's Arqana Breeze-Up Sale, which has been relocated from Deauville to Doncaster due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“We are delighted to renew our partnership with Naas Racecourse, which provides a great opportunity to showcase Arqana in Ireland,” the company's executive director Freddy Powell said. “The country has a very important place in the industry, both for breeding and racing, and it is a way for us to thank the Irish buyers and vendors who put their confidence in us throughout the year by being present at the Deauville sales. Many pinhookers will offer 2-year-olds at the Breeze-Up next week, several of whom invested in them as yearlings at Arqana.”

Added Eamonn McEvoy, general manager of Naas Racecourse: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with Arqana, a sales company that continue to go from strength to strength judged on the calibre of graduates coming from their sales. Arqana is a globally recognized power house, a brand Naas Racecourse are very proud to partner with. The team at Arqana are wonderful to work with and we thank them for their continued support.”

Starspangledbanner Filly In Naas Upset

There was an unexpected turn-up in the G3 Coolmore Stud EBF Fillies Sprint S. at Naas on Sunday, with the apparent “good thing” Contarelli Chapel (Ire) (Caravaggio) managing only fourth behind the Fozzy Stack-trained newcomer Hermana Estrella (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). Slowly away and racing in rear early off the strong tempo, the 50-1 shot was behind Ballydoyle's 2-7 favourite at halfway but had to come around as that rival began to struggle. Responding to Chris Hayes's urgings, the debutante worked her way past the speedy but errant Quick Suzy (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) inside the final 75 yards to secure a length success. “She's a very smart filly and Fozzy doesn't make entries like that unless they are good,” Hayes commented. “She's one of our nicer two-year-olds. She was green and raw, as you would expect going against experienced company but to me I was coasting and everything was going in slow motion. She was green and ran around, but won with her ears pricked. She is one to look forward to.”

Hermana Estrella is the second and final foal out of the unraced The Last Sister (Ire) (Lord Shanakill) who died after producing this talented performer. She was a half-sister to the G3 C L Weld Park S. and G3 Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial S. winner Lady Springbank (Ire) by Starspangledbanner's sire Choisir (Aus), who in turn produced the listed-placed Expressionism (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The third dam is the listed-winning and group-placed Santina (Ger) (Gimont {Ger}), whose descendants include the G3 Prix d'Arenberg scorer This Time (Fr) (Zafeen {Fr}) and the G3 Grosser Preis von Berlin winner Shinko's Best (Ire) (Shinko Forest {Ire}).

Ascot Clues As Cadamosto Takes To Naas

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Today's Observations features a recent breeze-up sale topper.

3.10 Naas, Cond, €37,500, 2yo, 5fT
CADAMOSTO (IRE) (No Nay Never) has been a non-runner on four occasions either side of his impressive winning debut from the re-opposing Silver Surfer (GB) (Caravaggio) over this trip at Dundalk last month, so it is to be hoped that Ballydoyle's descendant of the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Dance Design (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) makes his engagement in this Coolmore Stud Calyx Race. There is a strong vibe concerning Michael O'Callaghan's unraced colt Twilight Jet (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}), the £210,000 joint-topper at last month's Goffs UK 2yo Breeze Up Sale, so Royal Ascot is sure to feature in the winner's program.
