Irish EBF Barrier Trials On The Up With Dates Released For 2024 Fixtures

The Irish EBF Barrier Trials, which has been a source of Group 1, Classic and even Cheltenham Festival winners, will get underway at Naas on Monday, May 27. 

Dundalk Stadium will host the middle fixture on Monday, July 8, while Leopardstown will be the venue for the final date on Wednesday, August 28, again at six and seven furlongs.  

Charles O'Neill, CEO of Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, commented, “We are looking forward to staging the Irish EBF Barrier Trials again this summer. We are delighted to have the backing of the Irish EBF again and we are also very grateful to the tracks that have agreed to host fixtures amid what is already a very busy calendar.”

He added, “Thanks also to the owners, trainers and jockeys who have supported the Trials until now. We had horses from 35 different stables take part over two days last year. We also have to credit those behind the scenes including the IHRB, IRIS, stalls handlers and the medical and veterinary teams supporting.”

As in previous years, the Irish EBF Barrier Trials will be restricted to unraced two-year-olds and three-year-olds and every runner must be named and returned in training with a stalls certificate.

The updated terms and conditions will be advertised on the RAS webpage well in advance of each date. In recent years the Irish EBF Barrier Trials have resulted in sales of numerous horses to win in Britain, France, Hong Kong, the USA and Australia.

Bumper Entry for Ballyhane Stakes

The fifth running of the valuable Irish EBF Ballyhane S., which is to be held at Naas on August 5, has attracted 322 entries.

Worth a total of €300,000, with €150,000 to the winner and prize-money down to tenth place, the race is for EBF-eligible two-year-olds by sires with a median auction sale price of €75,000 or less.

Hugo Palmer was the winning trainer in 2023 with Golden Trick (Ire) (Galileo Gold {Ire}) for the Bronte Collection, which also owned the runner-up Jungle Mate (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}). The Bronte Collection syndicate has 18 horses entered for this year's race. 

Arizona Blaze (GB) (Sergei Prokofiev), who won the opening juvenile race of the Irish season, features among the entries, as does his runner-up Rowdy Yeats (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) and the third-placed Monotone (Ire) (Verbal Dexterity {Ire}). Arizona Blaze is one of 14 entries for Amo Racing. 

British-based Irishman Richard Fahey trains 13 of the 119 entries from the UK. He said: “The Irish EBF Ballyhane Stakes is a fantastic initiative but a bloody hard one to win. We've put 13 horses in it this year and even though it is early in the year it is a no-brainer to make these entries. The €250 entry for a €300,000 race is a massive incentive for owners and lets us all dream a little.

“We haven't managed to win the Ballyhane Stakes yet but we'll be trying desperately hard again this year to run a few in it because it is great prize-money and at a good time of the year for these juveniles.”

Joe Foley, who owns Ballyhane Stud and is chairman of the Irish EBF, added, “The race is now in its fifth year and it's fantastic to see such a strong number of entries from both home and abroad, and a big thank you to everyone who entered a horse. 

“With a massive pot of €300,000 on offer and prize-money down to tenth place it gives connections the chance to dream big at this time of year. We are looking forward to watching the upcoming juvenile races and seeing which horses come onto the radar for the Irish EBF Ballyhane Stakes in August.”

Calyx’s Purple Lily A New TDN Rising Star

Sunday's TRM Equine Nutrition Race at Naas looked an intriguing contest, with four winners lined up including one who was Group 1-placed at two. At the end, there was one who was in total command and that was the filly Purple Lily (Ire) (Calyx {GB}–Boca Raton {Ire}, by Approve {Ire}) who flashed distinct Classic potential to earn TDN Rising Star status. Racing for Alan O'Flynn's Zinlo Syndicate, the Paddy Twomey-trained Tatts Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up sensation had made an instant impression when off the mark in an often-informative Galway maiden in August. On only her second start, the 10-11 favourite was able to master Ballydoyle's G1 Criterium International third Portland (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the Johnny Murtagh-trained course-and-distance maiden winner Chicago Critic (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) and make light of the testing conditions.
“She's a nice filly and she had wintered well. She has size and scope and is a strong filly. We just gave her the one run after the breeze-ups last year and she was good,” Twomey said. “I like her, the horses have done loads of cantering but they haven't done much fast work. I thought she was a nice filly and when you are taking on a 108-rated colt you are asking them a question and she did it well.”
Content to let the two class colts of the race go on from the outset, Billy Lee asked the question of Purple Lily heading to two out and she responded gamely to subdue them soon after. At the line, she had put three lengths between her and the solid yardstick Portland, with another 4 1/4 lengths back to Chicago Critic in third. “We might look at a Guineas trial here and go for an Irish Guineas,” her trainer added. “I think Newmarket would come at her a bit quick and I think we'll take our time–Billy [Lee] says something like the [G1] Pretty Polly might suit her. Hopefully we have a good year with her.”
Calyx's third TDN Rising Star, including last year's G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. winner Persian Dreamer, Purple Lily is the third foal out of Boca Raton, a half-sister to the G1 Irish Oaks third and G3 Lancashire Oaks runner-up Lady's Secret (Ire) (Alzao). She also has a 2-year-old full-brother to the winner named Cataluyna (Ire) and a yearling filly by Cotai Glory (GB).

Daughter of Alice Springs Starts in Key Maiden

Aidan O'Brien introduces her in a 10-runner affair in the race he has won in the last three years with Galileo's future Classic winners Empress Josephine (Ire) and Tuesday (Ire) and group 3 winner and G1 Prix de l'Opera runner-up Jackie Oh (Ire).
