Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearling Sale Improves Across The Board In 2021

The Fasig-Tipton New York Bred Yearlings sale resumed Monday afternoon at the Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., with a vibrant session which flattered the strength and resilience of the New York bred marketplace.

The two-day sale concluded with across-the-board increases over the sale's most recent renewal in 2019, and top-three historical marks in number sold, gross, average, median, and RNA rate.

The session's top seller came in the form of Hip 419, a filly by Munnings, which sold for $350,000 to GMP Stables, Vekoma Racing, West Paces, Oracle Bloodstock, agent (video).

The chestnut filly was consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, agent. Hip 419 is the second foal out of multiple New York stakes winner Freudie Anne, who made 16 of her 25 starts on the NYRA circuit and earned nearly $400,000.

The top-priced filly over the two-day sale came during the Sunday session, when Hip 341, a filly by Uncle Mo, sold for $495,000 (read more).

“We hit the sales superfecta,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “Average was up, median was up, gross was up, and RNA rate was down. “We're obviously very, very pleased.”

A pair tied for the session's top-priced colt. First through the ring was Hip 528, a son of successful young sire Constitution, sold for $300,000 to DJ Stable (video).

Offered by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, the dark bay or brown colt was bred in New York by Fred W. Hertrich III and John D. Fielding. Hip 528 is the second foal out of the winning Medaglia d'Oro mare Rare Medal, and hails from the immediate family of two-time Sovereign Award winner Northernette and international champions Storm Bird and Green Tune.

Also sold for $300,000 was Hip 591, a colt from the first crop of Eclipse Champion Accelerate, who was purchased by David Stack (video).

Paramount Sales consigned the chestnut colt, which was bred in New York by SF Bloodstock. Hip 591 is out of the stakes placed winning Marquetry mare Ten Halos, making him a half-brother to graded stakes winner and multiple stakes winner Cinco Charlie (Indian Charlie), who earned more than $600,000. In addition, Ten Halos is a half-sister to Grade 2 winners My Pal Charlie and Bwana Charlie, and graded stakes winner Bwana Bull.

Three shared the top price for a colt over the course of the two-day sale, which includes the above two colts and Hip 330, a son of leading sire Into Mischief which sold for $300,000 during Sunday's session (read more).

“We're fortunate enough that the consignors once again gave us really outstanding horses,” said Browning, adding that there was also “significant bidding from a diverse buying group.”

Rounding out the session's top five were:

  • Hip 425, a filly from the first crop of Mendelssohn out of the Smart Strike mare Good Omen, sold for $250,000 to Bay Hill Stables from the consignment of Paramount Sales, agent. The filly hails from the immediate family of two-time Horse of the Year and successful sire Curlin.
  • Hip 508, a filly from the second crop of Practical Joke out of the winning Malibu Moon mare Orient Moon, sold for $250,000 to Klaravich Stable from the consignment of Indian Creek, agent. The filly was bred in New York by John Lauriello out of a daughter of Grade 2 placed multiple stakes winner Career Oriented.

“We've always been committed to this sale and this marketplace,” Browning concluded. “There was no segment of the marketplace more adversely affected by the COVID (pandemic) than the New York-bred yearling marketplace… It's nice to restore the marketplace for (the breeders), so they can have confidence going forward.”

Overall, 203 yearlings changed hands for a total of $18,566,500, a New York Bred Yearlings sale record, just beating the previous highwater mark set in 2018 when 172 yearlings sold for $18,492,00. The gross rose 14.6 percent from $16.2 million paid for 186 yearlings in 2019. This year also marks the first time more than 200 horses sold at New York Bred Yearlings.

The sale average was $91,461, a 5 percent increase from the 2019 average of $87,097, and ranked second all-time to the $107,512 record set in 2018. The median rose 16.7 percent to $70,000 from $60,000 during the 2019 renewal, and also ranks second historically only to the record of $76,000 set in 2018.

The RNA rate fell to 21.3 percent, the lowest at this sale – which RNA rate generally reflects the strength of the New York bred program and the added value of retaining a New York Bred yearling – since 1995. The RNA rated was the third-lowest in sale history.

Russell Considering De Francis Memorial Dash For Wondrwherecraigis

Patience and perseverance paid off handsomely for owners Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group, Madaket Stables, and Michael Caruso and trainer Brittany Russell when Wondrwherecraigis became a stakes winner for the first time in Friday's Tale of the Cat at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Based at historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., the 4-year-old gelding's front-running 2 ¾-length triumph under jockey Luis Saez has the connections thinking of taking the next step in their own backyard in the prestigious $200,000 Grade 3 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Saturday, Sept. 18 at Laurel Park.

Named for the late president and chairman of both Laurel and Pimlico, the De Francis' illustrious roster of winners includes Hall of Famer Housebuster, fellow sprint champions Cherokee Run, Smoke Glacken, Thor's Echo and Benny the Bull, and Lite the Fuse, the race's only two-time winner (1995-96) honored with his own stakes race in Maryland.

The six-furlong De Francis for 3-year-olds and up headlines four stakes worth $500,000 in purses, representing the first stakes action over Laurel's newly reconstructed main track. Laurel's fall meet is scheduled to open Thursday, Sept. 9.

“It's not out of the question. It seems like the timing is good, but we'll have to just see how things fall into place,” Russell said. “We have to see who nominates and what it looks like, but I think he could be very useful around here. If it means the Grade 3, great. If not, we'll look around.

“I like the idea. I like the distance, the timing, all those things,” she added. “But, we also want to be reasonable. It would be exciting for me.”

Married to jockey Sheldon Russell and 10 weeks away from delivering the couple's second child, Russell stayed behind in Maryland to watch Friday's race, leaving the saddling to assistant trainer Amanda Knox. Saturday morning's report was encouraging.

“Amanda said he's fantastic, sound, ate up,” Russell said. “He was bouncing around, happy as could be.”

Since mid-April, Wondrwherecraigis has been part of Russell's string at Pimlico, where he prepped for the Tale of the Cat with a commanding 5 ¾-length optional claiming allowance triumph July 18. Of his five career wins, two have come at both Pimlico and Laurel.

By multiple graded-stakes winning sprinter Munnings, Wondrwherecraigis cruised by three lengths in gate-to-wire fashion on the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan undercard May 14 at Pimlico, his first race in nearly nine months since finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Amsterdam last August at Saratoga.

Wondrwherecraigis was unraced at 2 after selling for $67,000 as a yearling, debuting with back-to-back wins at Laurel March 13 and June 6, 2020. Two weeks later, he was entered in the Keeneland Horse Association's Horses of Racing Age Sale but failed to meet his $210,000 reserve.

Sent to New York, Wondrwherecraigis ran third in the Gold Fever at Belmont Park before taking on graded competition in the Amsterdam, finishing 7 ½ lengths behind Yaupon – who would come back to win the Grade 3 Chick Lang last October and Lite the Fuse July 4 at Pimlico – before going to the sidelines.

“The partners have been patient. It's a perfect example of if you know the horse has ability, just do the right thing by them,” Russell said. “Hopefully it works out the way it seems to have with this horse.”

Wondrwherecraigis was nominated to the $100,000 Chesapeake Aug. 23 at Colonial Downs, also six furlongs for 3-year-olds and up, but how well he had done since the Pimlico race and the prospect of a smaller field landed him in Saratoga instead. It was Russell's fourth career win at Saratoga and first in a stakes.

“I sort of wrote this race off originally. We actually supplemented him. I didn't even nominate him because I didn't want to feel pressured,” Russell said. “He ran such a big number when he won the last time at Pimlico. I was really thinking that Colonial race was good timing and that track seems to be good for speed horses. There seemed like a lot of positives to go to Colonial.

“But then looking at it, it seemed as though it wasn't going to be a large field [at Saratoga]. I wasn't sure about quality at the time,” she added. “It worked out. It doesn't always work out that well, but it did this time.”

Wondrwherecraigis will return to Maryland next week and begin preparations for his next race. All stakes races at Saratoga and Maryland's graded races such as the De Francis are run Lasix-free.

“I'm going to leave him up there a couple days and just kind of let him recover. I didn't want to put him right on a truck and ship him six hours after that run,” Russell said. “We'll get him back home and see how he is. I think the main thing is, we learned that he doesn't need Lasix and that's a big deal when you're talking about running in the better races like that.”

Big Field Set for Sorrento

A wide-open field of 11 juvenile fillies have been entered for Friday evening's GII Sorrento S. at Del Mar.

Smash Ticket (Midnight Lute) is the 9-5 morning-line favorite off the heels of a field-best 78 Beyer Speed Figure earned in a five-length maiden score at second asking for trainer Todd Fincher at Del Mar July 17. She impressively dueled clear that day after breaking poorly. The dark bay was previously a debut second in the Lone Star mud June 5.

“It was a pretty big ask for her to jump on a plane, fly across country, step off and win,” Fincher said. “But she had shown a lot in her first race, so we had high expectations that she could. We think she's got a really bright future.”

Eda (Munnings), a $550,000 OBS March graduate, earned her diploma at first asking via disqualification after crossing the line a nose short for Bob Baffert at Santa Anita June 19. The unlucky Ko Olina (Stanford) returned to graduate versus Cal-breds in her next start.

Elm Drive (Mohaymen) kicked off her career with a blowout, eight-length decision on debut over four rivals at Los Alamitos June 26. The runner-up that day We All Agree (Unified) won next out in a $50,000 maiden claimer July 23.

Unbeaten Fasig-Tipton Debutante S. heroine At the Spa (Outwork), and sharp Cal-bred debut winner It's Simple (Nyquist), opted instead for Thursday's CTBA S. at Del Mar.

Munnyfor Ro Overcomes Wide Trip to Take Woodbine Oaks

Munnyfor Ro (Munnings) completed a quick-fire stakes double for her outstanding sire, overcoming a tough trip from a double digit gate to take out Sunday's C$500,000 Woodbine Oaks in Toronto.

Settled behind midfield through the opening furlongs, the $65,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase traveled four and five off the inside–though with some cover–down the backstretch and began working into it entering the final half-mile. Four deep for the run around the second turn, she sustained a long run despite the ground loss, hit the front in upper stretch and stayed on nicely to defeat Emmeline (Violence). Il Malocchio (Souper Speedy) was third. Minutes earlier, Munnings's Miss Alacrity stormed to victory in the Colleen S. at Monmouth Park.

Munnyfor Ro broke her maiden in career start number five over the Keeneland turf course while under the care of Brian Lynch ahead of a third to Gam's Mission (Noble Mission {GB}) in a first-level Churchill allowance May 8. Sixth to that foe in the GIII Regret S., Munnyfor Ro was a latest runner-up in the GIII Selene S. over this Tapeta track July 10.

“We were expecting a good performance out of her,” said winning trainer Kevin Attard. “She came up here this season in good shape from [trainer] Brian Lynch–had a great campaign over the winter time. She ran a fabulous race in the Selene. I thought she'd move off that race forwardly enough to kind of be really competitive here today. Had a good interim breeze and put it all together.”

For owner Rajendra Maharajh, it was a perfect day from start to finish.

“It's just a wonderful story and today's my mom's 80th birthday,” shared Maharajh. “Everybody is here with us, so it's a family day and a lovely day.”

Munnyfor Ro could take on the boys in the Aug. 22 Queen's Plate over a mile and a quarter, according to Attard, but would need to be supplemented to that first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

The winner's stakes-winning second dam is a full-sister to GI Ashland S. winner Little Belle, who has since gone on to produce Grade I-winning turf distaffer Dickinson (Medaglia d'Oro). Repartee is the dam of the 2-year-old filly Retort (Liam's Map) and a yearling filly by Unified.
