Munnings’ Eda Shines in Starlet S.

Baoma Corporation's Eda became the latest Grade I winner for her red-hot sire Munnings with a gutsy score in the GI Starlet S. at Los Alamitos Saturday night. Speeding out of the outside stall in this six-horse affair, the even-money favorite was in front rounding the first turn, but was headed by 40-1 shot and fellow Bob Baffert pupil Benedict Canyon (Midnight Lute) through a :23.65 first quarter. Meanwhile, their Grade I-winning stablemate Grace Adler (Curlin) caboosed the field. Eda regained command as the half went in :48.96, but Benedict Canyon stuck with her best she could, weakening a bit at the three-eights pole, as did Grace Adler. Cairo Memories (Cairo Prince), who was making her first start on dirt, ranged up to challenge turning for home and Benedict Canyon determinedly tried to keep pace on Eda's outside. Tonito's (Blame) split the Baffert pair to throw her hat in the ring in early stretch, gaining a half-length advantage on Eda. However, Eda refused to be denied, forging her way clear late for a half-length success. Cairo Memories surged late for second with Tonito's holding third.

“She rated off well and you never known how they're going to do going long until you try,” Baffert said. “She relaxed well, but turning for home I wasn't sure. Juan [Hernandez] said she really dug in when she was challenged and didn't want to lose. Pretty exciting, but disappointed in Grace Adler [who finished last]. She got upset in the paddock and [jockey Flavien] Prat told Jimmy [Barnes] she just had no interest in running. [Eda] is getting better and better. Getting the Grade I for her is very important.”

“She relaxed nicely and we had a good position on the outside down the backside,” Hernandez said. “She responded when I asked her at the head of the stretch and when they came to her on the inside and outside she didn't want to let them by. She was very game.”

A $550,000 OBSMAR buy after breezing in :10 flat, Eda crossed the line a nose short in her Santa Anita unveiling June 19, but was promoted to first after the original winner was disqualified for interference. It was 13 1/2 lengths back to the third-place finisher that day. Missing by a head next out in the GII Sorrento S. at Del Mar Aug. 6, she was a well-beaten fifth to re-opposing stablemate Grace Adler in the Sept. 5 GI Del Mar Debutante S. Returning to winning ways in the Anoakia S. back in Arcadia Oct. 24, the bay defeated Tonito's by 4 1/4 lengths last time in Del Mar's Desi Arnaz S. Nov. 13.

Pedigree Notes:

Eda is the fifth Grade I winner for Munnings and third this year, along with Kimari and Jack Christopher. She is also the 23rd graded winner and one of 53 black-type scorers that Coolmore stallion. Eda is the 14th Grade I winner, 29th graded scorer and one of 80 black-type victors out of a daughter of Lemon Drop Kid. Nate McCauley purchased Eda's dam Show Me for $24,000 with the winner in utero at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton February Sale and resold her for $535,000 at the recent Fasig-Tipton November Sale back in foal to Munnings. A half to GSW Aegean (Northern Afleet) and SW Light Bringer (Northern Afleet), Show Me was bred to Bolt d'Oro for 2020, but did noot produce a foal and had a Karakontie (Jpn) filly Mar. 26 of this year.

Sharp Starr Looks To Repeat In Go For Wand At Aqueduct

Barry Schwartz's Sharp Starr will look to capture back-to-back editions of the $250,000 Grade 3 Go For Wand Handicap, a one-turn mile for fillies and mares slated for next Saturday at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

The 4-year-old Munnings filly, out of the A.P. Indy mare Mindy Gold, breezed solo Saturday morning under trainer Horacio DePaz over a fast training track at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., going four furlongs in :48.68.

Last year, Sharp Starr defeated five rivals in the Go for Wand which saw the New York-bred filly capture her first graded stakes win and also her first win in open company while earning a 97 Beyer. Sharp Starr owns a 3-2-0-1 record racing at one mile on the dirt at the Big A.

DePaz believes his filly is in better shape for this year's edition.

“She's always had good form and it looks like she's stepping up. She's matured much more physically, so I'm very happy with her,” DePaz said.

Sharp Starr captured the $250,000 Empire Distaff last month at Belmont, off a two-month layoff, where she notched a 16-1 upset coming from last-of-10 under jockey Jose Ortiz, who will retain the mount. She earned a 92 Beyer for the win, her first of the 2021 season in five starts.

‘Great Horse To Have In The Barn’: Beverly Park Going For Ninth Consecutive Victory

Norman “Lynn” and Lola Cash's former $12,500 claim Beverly Park will attempt to notch his ninth consecutive victory Sunday in a conditioned allowance event at Churchill Downs.

Lynn and wife Lola burst onto the Kentucky racing scene in 2021. Lynn took out his trainer's license this year and entered Thursday with 134 starts and 25 wins. Along with being involved in racing, Lynn is extremely accomplished in the construction industry. He started Built Wright Homes as a small home construction and remodeling company that has expanded to serve several states across the country.

Lynn and Lola reside in Midway, Ky. but their horses have traveled to 10 racetracks so far this year. Many of their horses that run in Kentucky are under the care of veteran horseman Jerry Dixon.

“(Beverly Park) has just been a great horse to have in the barn,” Lynn said. “He's in great form and has been so awesome to us since we claimed him (at Belterra Park on Aug. 5). It's been an absolute thrill.”

Through racing Wednesday at Churchill Downs, the Cash's horses have made 13 starts at the Fall Meet with two victories. One of their wins was a $127,000 allowance race on Nov. 11 when Beverly Park cruised to a 5 ½-length score. The other was Wednesday when recent $62,500 claim Sir Alfred James held off the late charge of Long Range Toddy to win the featured $148,000 allowance event.

Beverly Park is the only horse in North America to have a perfect record from at least eight starts this year. The next highest horse is West Virginia-bred Muad'dib, who is 6-for-6. Greeley and Ben leads the nation in wins this year with a record of 14-11-2-0.

Beverly Park drew post No. 11 in Sunday's 6 ½-furlong featured event. The accomplished 4-year-old son of Munnings will be ridden by John McKee and face 10 rivals in Race 8 at 4:36 p.m. (all times Eastern). First post is 1 p.m.

‘He’ll Always Be Special To Us’: Russell Mulling Next Start For First Graded Winner Wondrwherecraigis

Coming off the first graded-stakes win for himself and his trainer, Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group, Madaket Stables and Michael Caruso's Wondrwherecraigis is enjoying some down time while the connections mull his next race.

The 4-year-old Munnings gelding was a front-running winner of the seven-furlong Bold Ruler (G3) Oct. 31 at Belmont Park, his second career stakes victory and first in graded company from 10 starts.

Based at Laurel Park with trainer Brittany Russell, Wondrwherecraigis' triumph came seven weeks following his disqualification to second after finishing first in the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G3) over his home track. It was also one day before Russell gave birth to a son, Rye, her second child with husband and jockey Sheldon Russell. They are also parents to 2-year-old daughter, Edy.

“I was disappointed not to be there, but, hey, we had another big thing going on,” Brittany Russell joked. “It was huge. It was so disappointing for him and the ownership group and everyone to see him disqualified that day. But, he came back and he showed that he is a graded-stakes winner.

“'Craig' is doing awesome. He hasn't missed a beat,” she added. “He thinks he's King Kong.”

Russell said they have yet to settle on a target race for Wondrwherecraigis. Among the options are $100,000 Dave's Friend, part of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championship (MATCH) Series, Dec. 26 at Laurel and the Toboggan (G3) Jan. 29 at Aqueduct. Both races are contested at seven furlongs.

“We're just sort of trying to give him some time now. I wouldn't say we're set on anything. There's a race in New York in January. There's the MATCH Series race at the end of December. Nothing's really set in stone,” Russell said.

“He'll get this next month. I just sort of backed off of him since he ran and we'll kind of start gearing him back up and let him tell us,” she added. “You have some ideas and goals in the back of your mind, but he doesn't owe us anything. If we keep him home, great. If we decide to take him somewhere else, that's cool, too.”

Russell credited her New York-based assistant, Amanda Olds, with playing a large part in Wondrwherecraigis' success. In addition to the Bold Ruler, his other stakes win came in mid-August in the Tale of the Cat at Saratoga.

“It's nice for us to be able to send him up and not worry about anything. There's no worry shipping him when you have someone like that to travel with,” Russell said. “When he was up at Saratoga, after he won he stayed with her for a while up there and, obviously, it was the right move. She did a great job with him. It's all the moving parts. We're lucky to have the team we have.”

Wondrwherecraigis owns six wins, one second and one third with $347,640 in purse earnings from 10 starts, making a successful debut last March at Laurel just before racing was paused amid the coronavirus pandemic. He has finished first in all five of his races in Maryland, four of them wins prior to the De Francis.

“He's cool. He's one of the original bunch from when we first started along with Hello Beautiful,” Russell said. “'Craig' was, at the end of that year, he was one of the horses that kind of came in and saved me. He just kind of keeps saving me. He got me that graded win, and he's just special. He'll always be special to us.”
