Camelot’s Sunny Queen Reigns In Munich

After the dust had settled on another edition of the Breeders’ Cup extravaganza Stateside, elite-level action continued apace in Germany with Munich staging Sunday’s Allianz-sponsored G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern, the country’s penultimate pattern-race event of the season, and Cayton Park Stud’s Sunny Queen (Ger) (Camelot {GB}) stepped forward to claim a career high in the 12-furlong feature. The February-foaled bay, untested as a juvenile, registered a May 7 debut third at Hannover when the German season rebooted in earnest and pounced for a first stakes success in the Listed Goddert Sybrecht-Erinnerungsrennen back there two week’s later. On a brief sabbatical until running fourth in Baden-Baden’s Sept. 12 G2 T von Zastrow Stutenpreis, she returned to Hannover and regained the winning habit in the Oct. 4 Listed Gorilla Millions Cup, but was narrowly denied when a short-head second in the Oct. 25 G3 Grosser Preis der Mehl-Mulhens-Stiftung back at the Neue Bult venue last time. Making her first start in the Cayton Park Stud silks here, Sunny Queen settled several lengths off the pace as Tabera (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and Manuela de Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) established a clear advantage up front. Making eyecatching headway under urging as the pacesetters were swamped in the straight, the 23-1 chance moved to within striking distance with 300 metres remaining and kept on resolutely under a late drive to deny G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) by a neck nearing the line for a career high. The winner’s stablemate Dicaprio (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) finished another two lengths adrift in third.

“I’m speechless,” jockey Rene Piechulek told GaloppOnline after registering a first Group 1 win of his own. “The filly has a huge heart, I knew that she could fight and that was amazing.” Trainer Henk Grewe added, “I don’t know if [former owner] Stefan Hahne is happy or not, there have already been many offers for her and now she is worth even more. I paid slightly more attention to Dicaprio during the race and when they turned for home I realised that Sunny Queen also had a very good chance of winning.”

Sunny Queen becomes the fourth Group 1 winner this year, and seventh overall, for her sire and she is also the first top-level scorer for multiple winner Suivi (Ger) (Darshaan {GB}), herself kin to a quartet of black-type scorers, headed by G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis and G2 Grosser Mercedes Benz-Preis scorer Simoun (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}). Suivi, whose five winners also feature Listed Neue Bult Derby Trial victor Suestado (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), is also half to the stakes-winning dams of GSW G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Savoir Vivre (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and MG1SW US champion Stacelita (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), who in turn produced MG1SW dual Japanese champion Soul Stirring (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}). Sunny Queen’s third dam Sea Symphony (Faraway Son) is kin to four stakes winners, most notably MGISW Breeders’ Cup Mile hero Steinlen (GB) (Habitat) and the stakes-winning dam of G1 Irish Derby hero Zagreb (Theatrical {Ire}). Suivi has an unraced 2-year-old filly and a yearling colt by Isfahan (Ger) to come.

Adlerflug Sophomores Face Off in Munich Showpiece

Gestut Auenquelle’s G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and Christoph Holschbach and Thomas Krauth’s Derby sixth Dicaprio (Ger) Adlerflug {Ger}) lock horns for a third time in Sunday’s G1 Allianz Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich, Germany’s penultimate pattern race of the year. The pair head the betting for the 12-furlong stamina test and were separated by a whisker when the former emerged victorious in Hoppegarten’s Oct. 3 G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin last time.

A solid domestic defence also features sophomore distaffers Tabera (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who snagged last month’s G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit at Hoppegarten, and Stefan Hahne’s G3 Grosser Preis der Mehl-Mulhens-Stiftung runner-up Sunny Queen (Ger) (Camelot {GB}). Stall Dusselforf Fighters’ Walderbe (Ger) (Maxios {GB}), who annexed Rome’s Oct. 25 G2 Gran Premio Del Jockey Club in his most recent start, adds another level of resistance.

Britain’s four-strong challenge includes Charlie Appleby representative Secret Advisor (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}), who ran second in Newmarket’s June 7 Listed Buckhounds S. last time, and the Ralph Beckett-trained duo Manuela de Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and Antonia de Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Both have won twice since running second and fourth, respectively, in last year’s renewal.

Barney Roy’s German Adventure Yields A Third Group 1 Success

Godolphin’s well-travelled Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) began this latest European campaign with a third in Royal Ascot’s G1 Prince of Wales’s S. last month and the gelded bay was all heart to claim Sunday’s G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich. The even-money favourite sported temporary headgear during the preliminaries of the 10-furlong contest and the soothing effect contributed to a smooth passage off the clear leaders in rear for the most part. Making headway in the straight when ridden along with a quarter-mile remaining, he joined the front rank, despite rolling around, entering the final furlong and was driven out to earn a third elite-level success in game fashion. Try as he might, last term’s G1 Deutsches Derby fourth Quest The Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) could not find a way past in the latter stages and was denied by a neck, with Joseph O’Brien-trained G3 Meld S. victor Patrick Sarsfield (Fr) (Australia {GB}) running on well to finish 1 1/4 lengths adrift in third.

“We were a little concerned when the rain came this morning as all of his best form is on fast ground,” said William Buick of the 2017 G1 St James’s Palace S. and this year’s G1 Jebel Hatta hero. “I thought the German horses set a very good standard, it was a very tough race and he struggled with the conditions from a long way out. He’s a high-class horse and his courage and ability got him to win the race. We thought the pace would be good and he jumped a little bit slow from the gates. We were positioned one place further back than where I wanted to be, but he was comfortable and relaxed. I followed Quest The Moon as I knew he’d take me into the race and I got a nice lead off him.”

Winning trainer Charlie Appleby added, “Barney Roy and Spotify flew in yesterday and stabled well overnight, but we came here looking for good-to-firm ground and the rain was a negative for our two horses. There was a strong pace from the start, the local horses ran very well and stamina really came into play.” He continued, “I’d like to thank Munich for putting the race on and allowing us to come. I’d also like to thank the sponsors very much for sponsoring the race at such challenging times for everybody. We’re delighted to be here, at Group 1 level, for Godolphin and very much appreciate everybody’s support.”

Barney Roy is the first of five foals and one of three winners produced by a daughter of G3 Ridgewood Pearl S. and G3 Brownstown Stud S. victress Cheyenne Star (Ire) (Mujahid). He is half to Listed Maggie Dickson Gold Cup runner-up Wisdom Mind (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and the once-raced 2-year-old colt Noble Dynasty (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who shaped with a deal of promise when a debut second at Newmarket last month. Descendants of his Listed Garnet S.-winning third dam Charita (Ire) (Lycius), herself a half-sister to GSW G1 Premio Vittorio di Capua second Stanott (Ire) (Mukaddamah), include ill-fated MG1SW speedster Gordon Lord Byron (Ire) (Byron {GB}).
