Intello’s Junko Dominates Munich Feature

Alain and Gerard Wertheimer's Junko (GB) (Intello {Ger}–Lady Zuzu, by Dynaformer), who hit the board in July's G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud earlier this term, encountered just three rivals in Sunday's 12-furlong G1 Grosser Allianz Preis von Bayern at Munich and made virtually all to claim a career high in Europe's final Group 1 contest of the season.

Last term's G3 Prix Noailles and this term's G3 Prix de Reux victor, third in ParisLongchamp's Oct. 15 G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris when last seen, was uncomfortable with an early crawl and immediately upped the tempo when seizing control approaching the judge first time. Comfortable on the lead until nudged along in early straight, the 13-10 second favourite was beyond recall once stretching clear passing the quarter-mile marker and stayed on relentlessly in the latter stages to easily account for Assistent (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) by three lengths. Gestut Ittlingen's G1 Preis von Europa heroine and 11-10 favourite India (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) was unable to land a telling blow and finished 2 1/2 lengths adrift in third, four lengths clear of the whipper-in Best Of Lips (Ire) (The Gurkha {Ire}). Junko will now point to the G1 Hong Kong Vase.

“He is a very big horse who needs time to get going and the slow early pace was not ideal, so I let him canter to the front,” Bauyrzhan Murzabayev told GaloppOnline. The jockey, who will ride for the Peter Schiergen stable next season after spending a year based with Andre Fabre, added, “I was sitting on the best horse in the race, so I could risk letting him take the lead and make his own race. He loved the soft ground, the trainer knows exactly what he's doing and I am grateful for the opportunity of riding him today.”

Mr Hollywood Stars In Munich’s Bavarian Classic

Wanja Soren Oberhof and Sebastian Weiss's Mr Hollywood (Ire) (Iquitos {Ger}–Margie's Music {Fr}, by Hurricane Run {Ire}) provided evidence of above-average ability when streaking to a 16-length triumph, and 'TDN Rising Stardom', in his Apr. 2 debut at Mulheim last time and photobombed the G1 Deutsches Derby picture with a decisive success in Monday's G3 Wettstar.de – Bavarian Classic at Munich.

Positioned off the clear leader in fifth until turning for home in this 10-furlong contest, the 2-1 joint-favourite powered forward in the straight to lead approaching the final furlong and, despite rolling around in front, kept on strongly in the closing stages to account for G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen victor and market rival Alpenjager (Ger) (Nutan {Ire}) by three lengths in taking fashion. Last year's G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten hero Fantastic Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), hitherto undefeated, finished 4 1/2 lengths adrift in third.

“It is usually a very difficult race to win, but not with him as he is such a fast horse on this ground,” winning rider Lukas Delozier told GallopOnline. “He was very green today, in every way, but he coped well with the softened ground. This is a good track, he is sure to improve for his next start and I think he is good enough for the [Deutsches] Derby.” Trainer Henk Grewe added, “He had worked very well at home [in Cologne] and we were expecting him to run well under the given circumstances, but working and racing can differ a great deal. He is sure to have learned a lot and will improve.” Connections indicated Germany's premier Derby trial, the [June 11] G2 Union-Rennen [at Cologne], is next on the agenda.

Mr Hollywood (Ger) (Iquitos {Ger}), who becomes the first stakes scorer from only four first-crop foals for his sire (by Adlerflug {Ger}), is the second of three foals out of Listed Escada Cup runner-up Margie's Music (Fr) (Hurricane Run {Ire}). The February-foaled bay's stakes-placed second dam Margie's World (Ger) (Spinning World) is a half-sister to G2 Gerling-Preis third Margosto (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}) and Listed Fruhjahrs-Stutenpreis placegetter Masai Mara (Ger) (Shaadi). Camelot’s Sammarco Pounces For Munich Group 1 Triumph

The elders smothered last week's G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot, dominating once more in this week's G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood, but the Class of 2019 landed a telling counterpunch as Gestut Park Wiedingen's homebred G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sammarco (Ger) (Camelot {GB}–Saloon Sold {Ger} {SP-Ger}, by Soldier Hollow {GB}) annexed the latest elite-level clash of the generations, doing so with aplomb, in Sunday's 10-furlong G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich.

Sammarco, who saluted in his Oct. 31 debut at Halle, suffered his only reversal when second over this course and distance in the May 1 G3 Bavarian Classic on seasonal return and bounced back in style to snag Cologne's June 6 G2 Union-Rennen before basking in Classic glory on the first Sunday of this month.

The 16-5 second favourite was well away to occupy second passing the judge first time and settled into a smooth rhythm against the fence when slipping one spot along the backstraight. Bustled along to close soon after turning for home, he angled into a clear passageway for the final quarter mile and kept on relentlessly under continued rousting to deny Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}) by 3/4-of-a-length in the dying strides. The Aga Khan's international globetrotter Ebaiyra (Distorted Humor) held every chance in the straight, but was unable to reach the leaders at the business end and ran on to finish a half-length adrift in third as the 13-10 favourite.

“Sammarco is truly a great horse and we will now take our time to decide where to go from here,” commented Peter Schiergen in the aftermath of securing a fifth renewal and hot on hooves of the trainer snagging Friday's G3 Thoroughbred S. at Goodwood with Rocchigiani (GB) (Time Test {GB}). “He will definitely run over longer trips again in the future and I was pretty certain he could also do the job over 10 furlongs. With regard to his future career as a stallion, it is so important for him to have won over different distances and he's achieved that now.”

“It was a big task and test for Sammarco, having to run against his elders from at home and abroad at the highest level, and just four weeks after winning the [G1 Deutsches] Derby,” insisted his owner-breeder Helmut von Finck after Sammarco emulated his damsire (by In The Wings {GB}), who garnered this event for Schiergen in 2005 and 2007. “He is a dream of a horse and such a genuine fighter. To win this race for a third time is an overwhelming feeling.”

Sammarco, one of 10 Group 1 winners for his sire (by Montjeu {Ire}), is the first of three foals produced by Listed Winterkonigin-Trial placegetter Saloon Sold (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Baden-Baden Cup victrix Salonblue (Ire) (Bluebird). The latter's progeny list includes Listed Melbourne Cup Day Plate victor Salon Soldier (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), GSP Listed Junioren-Preis victrix Salonlove (Ger) (Lawman {Fr}) and Listed Premio Tadolina winner Monblue (GB) (Monsun {Ger}). She is also the second dam of Listed Preis der Baden-Badener Hotellerie & Gastronomie winner Serena (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Salonblue is also kin to G3 Curragh Cup victor Peppertree Lane (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and stakes-winning G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit second Salonhonor (Ger) (Highest Honor {Fr}).
