Ebaiyra Takes Up Munich Challenge

In The Aga Khan's centenary year, Ebaiyra (Distorted Humor) looks to provide another highlight in Sunday's G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen. Having enjoyed a confidence-boosting win in the Listed Prix de la Pepiniere at Chantilly July 12, last year's G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud runner-up is looking for a first success at the highest level at which she has been placed on three occasions. Intriguingly, the Francis-Henri Graffard-trained 5-year-old meets Gestut Park Wiedingen's July 3 G1 Deutsches Derby and June 6 G2 Union-Rennen hero Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Gestut Paschberg's fellow 3-year-old Queroyal (Ger) (Churchill {Ire}) who took the Baden-Baden's G3 Derby-Trial May 28 before finishing ninth behind Sammarco in the domestic Derby.

Frankel’s Alpinista Upholds Family Tradition in Germany

Kirsten Rausing's 4-year-old filly Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) had yet to taste defeat in four prior outings this term and lined up for Sunday's G1 Allianz Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich coming back off wins in Hoppegarten's Aug. 8 G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin and Cologne's Sept. 26 G1 Preis von Europa last time. The homebred grey's second dam Albanova (GB) (Alzao), who was also conditioned by Sir Mark Prescott, had rattled off a trio of German Group 1 triumphs in a nine-week spree during 2004 and she emulated her grandmother's feat and stayed perfect for the year with a third elite-level triumph of her own in the 12-furlong feature. The vanquished at Berlin in that penultimate start included subsequent G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and the reopposing Nerium (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), who also finished second in the Preis von Europa. Alpinista recovered from an awkward stumble leaving the stalls and lobbed along under a taut rein, racing in a close-up second, passing the judge first time as old foe Nerium set the tone. In situ until turning for home, the 4-5 favourite was stoked into action for her challenge alongside G2 Prix Eugene Adam fourth Mendocino (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) approaching the two pole and stayed on strongly under continued rousting in the closing stages to outlast that rival by 3/4-of-a-length in game fashion. Nerium kept on well once headed in early straight and finished one length adrift in third.

“We are absolutely delighted with the mare and winning three Group 1 races is terrific,” assistant trainer William Butler told Sport-Welt. “Alpinista has progressed throughout the year and has developed into a top-class stayer. Congratulations to Miss [Kirsten] Rausing for sending us this great horse and to Luke Morris for giving her a great ride.”

Sarah Steinberg was delighted with the progress of runner-up Mendocino. “That was a great performance today and a second-place finish is a just reward for building him up so patiently,” she told GaloppOnline. “We can be absolutely satisfied today and will definitely have a lot of fun with him next year.” Nerium's trainer Peter Schiergen added, “He ran well and his rider gave him every chance. The form of the race is solid and he will stay in training next year.”

Alpinista, kin to the unraced 2-year-old filly Alpenblume (GB) (Kendargent {Fr}) and a yearling colt by Oasis Dream (GB), is one of 20 Group 1 winners by her sire and the first foal produced by a stakes-winning half to four black-type performers out of the aforementioned Albanova (GB) (Alzao). The quartet includes G3 Legacy Cup victor Algometer (GB) (Archipenko), stakes-winning G3 Geoffrey Freer S. placegetter Alignak (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) and multiple stakes winner All At Sea (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Albanova is one of four black-type performers thrown by G1 Moyglare Stud S. third Alouette (GB) (Darshaan {GB}), whose descendants also include dual G1 Champion S. heroine Alborada (GB) (Alzao) and stakes-winning G1 Epsom Derby second Dragon Dancer (GB) (Sadler's Wells). Alouette is kin to G3 Doncaster Cup vixtrix Alleluia (GB) Caerleon), herself the dam of G1 Prix Royal-Oak heroine Allegretto (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G2 Nassau S. winner Last Second (Ire) (Alzao), the latter being the dam of G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains-winning sire Aussie Rules (Danehill).

Kendargent’s Skalleti Annexes Munich Feature in Style

Jean-Claude Seroul's highly dependable 6-year-old grey Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) posted a career best in ParisLongchamp's G1 Prix d'Ispahan when last seen at the end of May and doubled his elite-level tally with an impressive five-length triumph in Sunday's G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen over 10 furlongs at Munich. Last term's G1 Champion S. runner-up had also annexed this term's G3 Prix Exbury and G2 Prix d'Harcourt in an unbeaten start to the campaign and was sent postward as the heavily supported 3-10 favourite to continue that trend. Skalleti adopted his usual hold-up tactics from the break and settled last of the six nominees as last term's G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit victrix Tabera (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) established a clear lead by halfway. Stirred into action by Gerald Mosse off the home turn, he displayed a smart turn of foot to go second inside the quarter-mile marker and opened up in style once sweeping by the wilting Tabera entering the final furlong to easily outclass last term's G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin fourth Grocer Jack (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}) by daylight. Last term's G3 Schwarzgold-Rennen winner No Limit Credit (Ger) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) was another to swamp Tabera in the closing stages and stayed on from off the pace to finish a neck back in third.

“It is always difficult to remain patient when waiting at the back, but I had just the horse for the job and was able to pick the right time to go,” said Gerald Mosse. “I was comfortable with the leader going clear because my main objective was to remain in touch and not to have to ask him for too much by being too far back. He's a great horse, I knew we'd get there and he didn't have to push himself to do so. It's a great team effort, we keep winning big races and I'm more than happy.”

Winning trainer Jerome Reynier added, “We have sent more horses to Germany this year, without being able to win any races yet, and we are so happy to win our first one in this great, prestigious race. Skalleti struggled to come back after everything went wrong in Hong Kong last year and we were not expecting such a comeback in the [G3] Prix Exbury in March. He has been impressive ever since, that's his second victory at the highest level and he's a very special horse for all of us.” Looking ahead to a second attempt at Ascot's Oct. 16 G1 Champion S., Reynier continued, “Now we have to take the right decisions to bring him spot on for the Champion S. in mid-October in England, but we're not sure if we're going to use the [Oct. 2 G2] Prix Dollar, which is only two weeks prior to the race, first. We did that last year and he finished first in the Dollar and second in the Champion.”

Skalleti, recording his ninth pattern-race victory here, is the second foal bred from MGSP Listed Prix Occitanie victrix Skallet (Fr) (Muhaymin). He is a full-brother to this year's G2 Prix Vicomtesse de Vigier winner Skazino (Fr), Listed Prix du Ranelagh placegetter Skalleto (Fr) and the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Skalli (GB). Skallet is the leading performer out of Listed Le Vase d'Argent runner-up Siran (Fr) (R.B. Chesne {GB}), herself kin to Listed Derby du Languedoc victor Percent Premium (Fr) (Johann Quatz {Fr}). Skalleti's fourth dam La Manouche (Margouillat {Fr}) is kin to the stakes-winning Mousseline de Soie (Fr) (Riverman), herself the dam of three black-type winners headed by stakes-winning G2 Grosser Hertie-Preis von Deutschland runner-up Silk Stage (Stage Door Johnny) and whose descendants include Listed Woodlawn S. victor Termsofengagement (Private Terms).

Skalleti On The Prowl Sunday

Munich's G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen is the sole pattern-race action in Europe on Sunday and it should be a procession for France's star Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) provided all goes to plan. Successful in the Mar. 21 G3 Prix Exbury at Saint-Cloud and ParisLongchamp's Prix d'Harcourt Apr. 11 and G1 Prix d'Ispahan May 30, Jean-Claude Seroul's 6-year-old continues his march towards the G1 Champion S. in which he was runner-up in October. Of the home contingent, Dr Christoph Berglar's May 2 G3 Premio Ambrosiano winner Grocer Jack (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}) sets the standard but he has ground to make up on Skalleti based on his second to the Prix d'Ispahan fourth Wally (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G2 Gran Premio di Milano at the San Siro last time June 27. Of the two 3-year-olds, Stall TMB's Mythico (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) boasts Classic-winning form having conquered the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen or German 2000 Guineas at Cologne May 24.
