Sconsin Outlasts Bell’s The One To Win Open Mind At Churchill Downs

Lloyd Madison Farms IV's homebred Sconsin got the first run on Bell's the One down the stretch in Saturday night's 12th running of the $300,000 Open Mind (Listed) at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., as she turned back a late run from the 4-5 favorite to prevail by a half-length in a clash of two of the top filly and mare sprinters in America.

Trained by Greg Foley and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, Sconsin ran six furlongs in a stakes record 1:08.75 as the 9-5 second betting choice.

Sconsin, 3 ¼-length winner of the $150,000 Grade 3 Winning Colors at Churchill Downs in May, was rated in fourth, as expected, behind pacesetter Mundaye Call who dictated the terms from the rail through early fractions of :21.64 and :44.77. Ain't No Elmers and Jungle Juice (IRE) tracked just behind the leader. Bell's the One, who improved her impressive record to nine wins from 19 starts and $1.1 million earnings after a victory in the $200,000 Grade 2 Honorable Miss at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., this summer, trailed the compact field of five fillies and mares.

Sconsin made the first move and had a two-length advantage on Bell's the One leaving the turn. Sconsin drew even with the leading trio with a furlong to run and out-finished Bell's the One to the wire.

“A lot of credit has to go to Greg and his team for getting this filly ready to go tonight,” Gaffalione said. “She was very sharp and we got into a good position early. There was some pace in front early. She dug in well late to hold off (Bell's the One). It was a really strong effort tonight.”

Sconsin, who banked the $185,000 first prize, improved her record to five wins, four seconds, and a third in 15 starts. Her career earnings total $783,362.

The career earnings for the 4-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Include now total $783,362.

“Going into the race we saw there was a little bit of speed on paper,” Foley said. “She got the pace setup tonight unlike the Ballerina at Saratoga. Neil (Pessin)'s filly (Bell's the One) beat us in the spring and we got the better hand tonight. She deserves it. Tyler gave her a great ride. He knew Bell's the One was coming and Sconsin just had her measured tonight. It was our turn.”

Sconsin paid $5.60, $2.40 and $2.10. Bell's the One, ridden by Corey Lanerie, returned $2.40 and $2.10. Mundaye Call finished another four lengths back in third under Florent Geroux and paid $2.40 to show. It was another half-length back to Jungle Juice (IRE) and 6 ¾ lengths back to Ain't No Elmers.

“It was a great race tonight with two solid horses,” said Neil Pessin, trainer of Bell's the One. “Bell's ran a great race and we are proud of her effort.”

Saturday's race saluted the late Eugene Klein's Hall of Fame filly Open Mind, the D. Wayne Lukas-trained winner of the 1988 Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs who returned to the Louisville track the following spring to win the Kentucky Oaks. The New Jersey-bred filly was an Eclipse Award champion at ages two and three. A winner of 12 races and $1,844,372 in 19 starts, the daughter of Deputy Minister was enshrined in Racing's Hall of Fame in 2011.

Grade 1 Winner Ce Ce Dominates Invitees To Princess Rooney

Bo Hirsch LLC's Ce Ce is still the most prominent invitee to the $350,000 Princess Rooney (G2) July 3 at Gulfstream Park.

The multiple Grade 1 stakes winner is also the most accomplished performer on the second of three invitational lists for the Princess Rooney, a seven-furlong Breeders' Cup 'Win and You're In' race for fillies and mares that will headline the Summit of Speed program that will also feature the $200,000 Smile Sprint Invitational (G3), a six-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up.

Ce Ce, who captured the Beholder Mile (G1) at Santa Anita and the Apple Blossom (G1) at Oaklawn last year, is trained by Michael McCarthy, who ventured from his Santa Anita base with City of Light to win the $9 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream in 2019. The 5-year-old daughter of Elusive Quality has raced twice this year, debuting with a 3 ¼-length victory in a seven-furlong optional claiming allowance April 17 before coming up short in a fourth-place finish in the two-turn Santa Maria (G2) a month later.

Trainer Brad Cox, who took Gulfstream's top prize after saddling Knicks Go for a victory in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Jan. 23, is represented on the Princess Rooney invitational list by two horses. OXO Equine LLC's Mundaye Call joins Kueber Racing LLC and partners' Vault, who captured the Ruffian (G2) at Belmont last time out, on the list of 13 invitees.

Mundaye Call is one of five fillies and mares added to the second of three Princess Rooney invitation lists. Ciaglia Racing LLC and partners' Venetian Harbor, 2W Racing LLC's Bronx Beauty, e Five Racing Thoroughbreds' Sound Machine, and and Saul Kupferberg's Honor Way are also first-time Princess Rooney invitees.

Venetian Harbor, a 4-year-old daughter of Munnings who captured the Raven Run (G2) at Keeneland before finishing off the board in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) last year, made a victorious 2021 debut on turf in the June 5 Monrovia (G2) at Santa Anita. The Richard Baltas trainee finished second in the Ashland (G1) at Keeneland and Test (G1) at Saratoga last year before winning the Raven Run.

The second of three Princess Rooney Invitational lists includes two others who are Grade 1 stakes-placed graded-stakes winners: Medallion Racing and partners' Estilo Talentoso and Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC's Victim of Love.

Juan Arriagada-trained Estilo Talentoso won two of six starts at Gulfstream, including a maiden score and an overnight-stakes victory, before hitting the road to finish in a dead-heat with Belle's the One for second in the Madison, check in third in the Derby City Distaff, and win the Bed o' Roses (G3) at Belmont. Todd Beattie-trained Victim of Love, who captured the May 8 Vagrancy (G3) at Belmont, concluded her 2020 racing second with a third-place finish in the Ballerina (G1) at Saratoga.

Holly Hill Stables LLC's Pacific Gale, who captured the Inside Information (G2) and Hurricane Bertie (G3) during Gulfstream's Championship Meet; LLC's Lake Avenue and Gary Barber's Laura's Light are Grade 2 stakes winners have been included on the first two invitation lists.

Into Mischief Filly Gets the ‘Call’ in Miss Preakness

Mundaye Call (Into Mischief), an eye-catching winner in track-record time of the Runhappy Audubon Oaks at Ellis Park Aug. 9, seeks her first graded score in Saturday’s GIII Miss Preakness S. at Pimlico.

After recording a field-best 100 Beyer Speed Figure in that front-running, 7 1/4-length decision, the OXO Equine colorbearer got caught up in a torrid pace in Churchill’s GII Eight Belles S. Sept. 4 and tired to fourth.

The 7-5 morning-line favorite takes on a pair of ‘TDN Rising Stars’ here, including the field’s lone Grade I winner Wicked Whisper (Liam’s Map).

A close second behind Fly On Angel (Palace Malice) in the GIII Charles Town Oaks Aug. 28, Wicked Whisper looks for her first win since capturing Belmont’s GI Frizette S. last October.

‘Rising Star’ Ain’t No Elmers (Goldencents), a sharp winner of her first two attempts at Fair Grounds earlier this term, ended a three-race losing streak with an optional claiming score at Churchill Downs Sept. 2. She is a perfect three-for-three at the six-furlong distance of the Miss Preakness.

Into Mischief Filly All by Her Lonesome in Audobon Oaks

One day after ‘TDN Rising Star’ Gamine’s dominant romp in the GI Longines Test S., fellow Into Mischief sophomore filly Mundaye Call turned in a similarly head-turning performance. The pricey Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad began her career with Don Chatlos, Jr., missing in her Saratoga debut almost exactly a year ago by a head at odds-on and finishing one slot ahead of Secondary Market (Into Mischief), who took a salty Saratoga allowance Sunday. Mundaye Call set the pace before fading to seventh in the GI Spinaway S. Sept. 1, but resurfaced at Del Mar Nov. 16 to break through by daylight over two next-out winners. She subsequently joined the Brad Cox barn, and returned to take a Keeneland allowance July 11 over Perfect Happiness (Majesticperfecton), who aired by 8 1/4 lengths in a local allowance a week ago.

One of many one could make a case for here, the bay took no prisoners from the outset as she bowled along on the front end through splits of :22.25 and :45.11. She never showed any signs of slowing, and poured it on in the stretch to cruise away under minimal encouragement while lowering the track record.

“Not surprised,” rider Florent Geroux said of the record-breaking effort. “The filly has been working extremely well in the morning. We’ve been very high on her. She won nicely first time for Brad at Keeneland with Joel Rosario while I was gone at Belmont Park to ride Monomoy Girl (Tapizar). You never expect a track record. But we expected a big race for her today.”

Cox added, “She’s a big strong filly. Right sire. That sire is amazing. We’ve had luck with Covfefe, Owendale, others. Gamine–we don’t have her, but wish we did. Long list of good Into Mischiefs, and she’s hopefully going to be on the list. She’s fast. She showed that today breaking the track record. She’s still lightly raced. We’re very pleased with what she was able to accomplishment today.”

Cox said he would discuss the prospects of running in next month’s GI Kentucky Oaks with owner Larry Best.

Mundaye Call is out of an unraced daughter of French MGSW and English G1SP Smolensk, who also produced GSW/GSIP Can the Man (Into Mischief). Her third dam is Oaks winner Blush With Pride, who in turn was the dam of Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour (Deputy Minister). Reve d’Amour has an unraced 2-year-old filly by Malibu Moon, a yearling filly by Strong Mandate and a foal full-brother to Mundate Call. She was bred back to Gun Runner.
