Israr Eclipses Adayar In Newmarket’s Thursday Feature

The odds for Thursday's Kingdom of Bahrain-sponsored G2 Princess of Wales's S. suggested a measure of redemption was in store for Derby and King George hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), but Shadwell's former handicapper and 7-2 second favourite Israr (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}–Taghrooda {GB}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}) confounded those in possession of 1-3 tickets with a power-packed display of his own to claim a career best in the 12-furlong feature. The eventual winner slipstreamed Godolphin duo Global Storm (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) and Adayar through the early fractions and eased outside into an echelon formation in readiness for his bid passing halfway. Moving into second with three furlongs remaining, he was pushed to the front going into “the dip” and lengthened clear in impressive fashion up the hill to easily assert superiority by 4 1/2 lengths. Adayar was unable to match the winner's kick up the hill, finishing a well-beaten second. Stablemate Global Storm was 7 1/2 lengths further adrift in third.

Israr, who attained 'TDN Rising Star' status tackling one mile at Doncaster on debut in 2021, snagged two of six handicap outings last year and opened this campaign with runner-up finishes in May's G3 Aston Park S. at Newbury and in last month's Listed Grand Cup at York.

“We ran him at York over a mile-and-six, he took on a good stayer [Quickthorn] that day and it was a mistake as it was too far,” explained John Gosden after collecting a third renewal. “They have gone strong fractions today and they are not far off a track record. It was a great performance, he coped with the good-to-firm ground and it was the best performance of his life. I expected him to run well today, but I didn't expect him to beat Adayar like that. He is improving, but I don't want to rush him in any big races like the [G1] King George. I think it would be too soon and too quick after a performance like that. I'd like to try and box a bit more cleverly than that. If we space his races he will be a nice horse right the way through to the [G1] Sheema Classic next year. I do have plans, but I've not got them organised yet so I will have to get the old [programme] book out.”

It was a first triumph in the race for rider Jim Crowley, who added, “He didn't quite get home last time at York, but he is probably only just coming to himself now. He has a very good personality and is very laid back, but he is tough and tries hard. As soon as I got upsides Adayar at the two pole I pretty much knew we had got him beat. It looks as though a mile-and-a-half is definitely his trip. He is a big, strong horse that is getting better with racing and age and is a work in progress.”

Reflecting on a sub-par performance from Adayar, trainer Charlie Appleby said, “Will [Buick] was happy throughout the race and when he made the move we thought he'd go and put it to bed. To be fair to Israr, he came under the pump before we did and we thought we had got him at it. He was disappointing when he hit the rising ground and just emptied out. We'll get him home and see what the vitals say after the race, but it wasn't the ground. He's won on quick ground before so I'm not going to use that as an excuse and we'll see if anything comes out in the wash.”

Israr becomes the first pattern-race scorer, from two winners, produced by G1 Oaks and G1 King George S. & Queen Elizabeth S. heroine Taghrooda (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who also hit the board in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Taghrooda is the leading performer for multiple stakes-winning G2 Lancashire Oaks second Ezima (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), herself a daughter of the unraced Ezilla (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}). Descendants of Ezilla include Group 1-winning siblings Estimate (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), Enzeli (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}), Ebadiyla (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and Edabiya (Ire) (Rainbow Quest). Taghrooda has the unraced 2-year-old filly Taraneem (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and a yearling colt by Lope De Vega (Ire) to come.

Poulains Glory For Muhaarar’s Marhaba Ya Sanafi

There was a surprise in store in Sunday's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains as Jaber Abdullah's Marhaba Ya Sanafi (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}–Danega {GB}, by Galileo {Ire}) edged out Isaac Shelby (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) to provide his owner-breeder and trainer Andreas Schutz with a red-letter day at ParisLongchamp. Sitting handy in fourth early under Mickael Barzalona, the relative of Galileo's luminary Soldier Of Fortune (Ire) who was second to American Flag (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in the course-and-distance G3 Prix de Fontainebleau last month surrendered first run to Isaac Shelby in the straight. Wearing down that rival inside the last 75 metres, the 26-1 shot asserted for a short-neck success, with TDN Rising Star Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) two lengths away in third.

The 3-5 favourite American Flag had no excuses in fifth in a renewal cut to nine after KHK Racing's TDN Rising Star Knight (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) was a withdrawal at the start. “We were hoping to finish in the first five, so to win is unbelievable,” Schutz said. “I was also hoping for more rain. He had worked well in the company of my other horses, but I don't necessarily have much to go on. I have been in France for seven years now and I hope that this victory will mark a new turning point in my career. I need to speak to the jockey and the owner, but he's in the [G1 Prix du] Jockey Club and that looks like the most logical target.”

Confined to maiden and conditions events prior to the Fontainebleau, Marhaba Ya Sanafi made his debut over nine furlongs here in October and followed a fourth there with a win at a mile on Chantilly's Polytrack the following month. Back with another win over that same course, distance and surface when nosing out the Fabrice Chappet-trained Bless (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}) in March, the bay didn't appear to have any excuses as American Flag rushed by late in his first black-type test and was understandably overlooked. Finding improvement as the Fontainebleau winner possibly under-performed, his inherent stamina was telling late on as Isaac Shelby stepped beyond seven furlongs for the first time.

Brian Meehan said of the runner-up, “We were a bit frustrated by the lack of pace, especially in the first part of the race. He hasn't shown the full extent of his talent yet. The best is yet to come, especially in races where there will be more pace. We are thinking of Royal Ascot, and in particular the St James's Palace Stakes.” Alessandro Botti is also bound for the Royal meeting with Breizh Sky. “My horse ran on well, but I think the draw maybe cost us a better placing,” he said. “I don't think he will stay further and the [G3] Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot will be next.”

Marhaba Ya Sanafi becomes the second top-level and 10th group winner for his sire, whose progeny show a marked preference for this type of testing ground. The unraced dam, who is also responsible for a 2-year-old filly by Acclamation (GB), was a 58,000gns purchase by Rabbah Bloodstock at the 2016 Tatts December Sale but has already been re-sold as Duncan McGregor presciently snapped up a bargain at €16,000 at the most recent edition of Goffs November. Danega hails from a distinguished Jim Bolger family which features the aforementioned G1 Irish Derby hero Soldier Of Fortune and the G1 Gran Criterium winner and Irish Derby runner-up and successful jumps sire Sholokhov (Ire) (Sadler's Wells).

The second dam is the G3 Noblesse S. winner and G2 Lancashire Oaks runner-up Danelissima (Ire) (Danehill), who produced the G3 Ballysax S. runner-up Fergus McIver (Ire) by Sadler's Wells and is a full-sister to the G3 Railway S.-placed Daneleta (Ire). She is in turn responsible for Bolger's G1 Dewhurst S.-winning sire Intense Focus (Giant's Causeway) and is the ancestress of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy) and last year's G3 Flame of Tara S. scorer Aspen Grove (Ire) (Justify) and Listed Washington Singer S. winner Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Muhaarar Colt A New Rising Star

Bypassing the 2000 Guineas in favour of another confidence-building exercise in Goodwood's British EBF 40th Anniversary Conditions S. on Friday, Rosehill Racing's bargain 32,000gns Book 3 purchase Cicero's Gift (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}–Terentia {GB}, by Diktat {GB}) rewarded that patience by taking his record to three-for-three with consummate ease to become the latest TDN Rising Star. Sent off the 7-4 second favourite for the mile contest, the Charlie Hills-trained relative of the smart sprinter Cartimandua (GB) (Medicean {GB}) was settled under cover on the rail by Kieran Shoemark throughout the early stages.

Eased out of his pocket approaching the furlong pole, the bay who had won on testing ground at Newbury in October and on Wolverhampton's Tapeta in March quickly settled the issue before surging to a 5 1/2-length dismissal of the 11-8 favourite Kolsai (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The Roger Varian-trained runner-up provides useful context to the form, having been just a half-length second to the well-regarded Canberra Legend (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in Newmarket's Listed Feilden S. last month.

 

Cicero's Gift, who holds an entry in the G1 St James's Palace S., brings Muhaarar's TDN Rising Star tally to four, with the P. G. Johnson S. winner and GII Miss Grillo S. third Be Your Best (Ire) winner currently chief among them. The dam, a smart five-furlong handicapper, has produced one black-type performer so far in the Listed Queen Charlotte S. runner-up Crossing The Line (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). She is out of the Listed Oh So Sharp S. scorer Agrippina (GB) (Timeless Times), who produced the aforementioned Cartimandua. Successful in the Listed Kilvington Fillies' S. and Listed Cecil Frail S. and third in the G3 Ballyogan S., she went on to throw the G2 July S. third Elronaq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Terentia's 2-year-old colt is by Golden Horn (GB), while her yearling son of Mohaather (GB) was a 52,000gns purchase by Manister House Stud at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Dubai Mile Put Through His Paces Over The Rowley Mile

Group 1 winner Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion) galloped over the Rowley Mile in Newmarket on Wednesday. The Ahmad Al Shaikh silksbearer is being primed for a possible start in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas over this course on May 6.

Trained by Charlie Johnston, the 3-year-old was originally pencilled in for the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dante S. at York in mid-May, but connections are weighing the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud hero's chances in the run-up to the G1 Betfred Derby on June 3.

“We've been having a debate internally all spring really regarding what is the best route for this horse,” said Johnston. “We're pretty confident his optimum trip this year will be a mile and a half plus and you can see in his work there that he's not travelling hard on the bridle behind the other horse. He's a very laid-back horse who is behind the bridle and his last furlong is his best furlong.

“But, having won a Group 1 as a 2-year-old, your route to the Derby is narrowed down quite dramatically. You either have to have to step down in grade or you have to go to the Guineas. From an early point it's been either Guineas-Derby or Dante-Derby. The way they're in the calendar this year running in all three is pretty unrealistic.

“I've spent most of the spring leaning on the side that he should be going Dante-Derby, but Ahmad is always keen to take on a challenge and take the ambitious route–and when you've got a Group 1-winning 2-year-old, the reality is winning the Dante is not going to add anything to this horse's stallion profile, whereas finishing third in the Guineas would be a big asset to him.”

The chestnut won at second asking over a mile at Windsor last August and added an all-weather mile contest at Kempton later that month. Second over the Guineas course and distance in the G2 Royal Lodge S. in September behind Thursday's G3 bet365 Craven S. entry The Foxes (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), the son of Beach Bunny (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) thrived in the heavy going at Saint-Cloud in his top-level score a month later.

Johnston added, “We're all well aware that this horse is being trained and going to be campaigned as a top-class mile-and-a-half horse, it's just what we do in the early season to get him there.

“I'd love a soft ground Guineas, then he really would be a player because we know he handles testing conditions, and one asset you can never take for granted here is he's run over the course and distance. Danny says you don't even notice the dip on him, he just floats down it and out the other side. The Guineas is not a race you go into as a prep race, but if he was running in many ways it would be a prep race for the Derby.”

Also taking a spin over the course on Wednesday was the Charlie Hills-trained two-for-two Circero's Gift (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) with Kieran Shoemark at the controls. The Rosehill Racing-owned colt worked in company with stablemate Saratoga Gold (GB) (Mayson {GB}) under Michael Hills, however, his participation in the Newmarket Classic is not definite. He won both his Newbury debut last autumn, and a Wolverhampton all-weather affair on Mar. 30.

“He worked well and had a nice little blow afterwards as well actually, so it was just what we wanted I think,” said Hills. “He's obviously had two starts and two wins and we're just trying to feel our way really and see exactly where we are and find out a bit more about him. Today he behaved great, had a nice bit of work and did what we asked him.

“We didn't really want to run in a trial and put three quick races into him. It's going to be a long season, so we'll just try to keep him as fresh as we can.

“We'll see how the week unfolds with the trials and make a decision next week. There is a conditions race at Goodwood around the same weekend as the Guineas, so that could be another route to take, but I'm pretty open-minded at the moment.

“He's a nice horse and there's only one Guineas, isn't there? If we decide against it you've got Goodwood and the Dante at York and the [G3] Hampton Court [S.] at Royal Ascot, something like that. I think I could see him stepping him up in trip later in the year.”
