First World War Impresses In Return To Turf With Kitten’s Joy Win

One could hardly blame trainer Brendan Walsh for trying First World War (War Front) on the main track. After all, the colt had shown promise breaking his maiden on debut over the undulating Kentucky Downs turf course in September before finishing a narrow fourth in the GII Bourbon S. Oct. 8 behind a trio of horses who'd all seen stakes success on either the dirt or the Tapeta. He made a good show of himself by checking in second on both attempts–first to 'TDN Rising Star' Parchment Party (Constitution) and then to Otello (Curlin) by just a half-length in the Mucho Macho Man S. Jan. 1. But off a best-of-40 four-furlong drill Jan. 28, Walsh opted to place the Qatar Racing/Hunter Valley Farm entry back on the grass and was quickly rewarded with a win in Saturday's GIII Kitten's Joy S.

While he took a chunk of early money, First World War wound up second choice at 5-2 behind the Repole Stable/Todd Pletcher entry Noted (Cairo Prince). Away clearly from the middle of a gate, Tyler Gaffalione positioned his runner towards the front just off the heels of longshot pacesetter Tocayo (Always Dreaming). Racing two wide around the first turn, First World War began to pick up a clear second as the half went in :47.97. Still under a hold past the quarter pole, Gaffalione finally gave his mount a shake of the reins and First World War responded in earnest, charging up outside of Tocayo to strike the front and holding off a charging Hammerstein (Oscar Performance) to earn the win.

“All the credit goes to Brendan and his team,” said Gaffalione. “They brought the horse over ready and he fired big for us. Everything went to plan. The speed horse jumped out in front and my horse settled great behind him. He got into a great rhythm and he responded well for me down the lane.”

“He's a tremendous talent,” Gaffalione continued. “He's still learning, but the sky's the limit for him. If he keeps developing the way he is, I think we'll have a pretty nice horse down the road.”

Pedigree Note:

Claiborne stalwart War Front picked up his 116th stakes winner Saturday. Out of GIII Indiana Oaks S. runner up Sundaysatthebeach, First World War is also the 101st stakes winner for Medaglia d'Oro as a broodmare sire. Sundaysatthebeach, herself a daughter of MGISW and $1.8m Stonestreet broodmare purchase Ask the Moon (Malibu Moon), is a half to MSW/MGSP Belgrano (War Front). First World War is her first foal and she has a 2-year-old Candy Ride (Arg) colt as well as a yearling Uncle Mo colt both in the wings. She visited Street Sense for 2024.

FTBOA Names 2022 Champions

Simplification (Not This Time) was named the 2022 Florida-bred Horse of the Year in a vote by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association board of directors.

Bred by France Weiner and her late husband Irwin Weiner, Simplification, who was also named the 2022 Florida-bred Champion 3-Year-Old Colt, was recognized for his victories in the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. in April and in the Mucho Macho Man S. in January, both at Gulfstream. He also produced several other graded-stakes performances in 2022 including a fourth-place finish in the GI Kentucky Derby. Simplification also helped his dam, Simply Confection (Candy Ride {Arg}), take home honors as the 2022 FTBOA Broodmare of the Year.

The 2022 FTBOA Florida Breeder of the Year and Leading Owner by Florida-bred Earnings award went to Arindel, who led all breeders from the Sunshine State with $3,050,911 in Florida-bred earnings.

Khozan (Distorted Humor) was named the 2022 Florida Stallion of the Year for the third consecutive year with progeny earnings of $4,513,950.

Simplification Keeps the Ball Rolling for Not This Time

Simplification (Not This Time) became the 17th stakes winner and third in the last six days for his in-form sire with a convincing victory in this first step on the road to the GI Florida Derby and–perhaps–beyond.

An even fourth on his 5 1/2-furlong debut on the synthetic track Oct. 1, the bay overwhelmed a group of Florida-bred maidens by 16 3/4 lengths Oct. 23, good for a 92 Beyer. He couldn't put them back to back, faltering to be third at long odds-on Nov. 13, but had his fair share of supporters Saturday.

Away without incident, Simplification was part of the early scramble for the lead and assume command outright hooking up with the course proper after an opening quarter of :23.70. Well rated through the middle fractions while traveling nicely for Javier Castellano, the second betting choice was a bit late swapping his leads in upper stretch and lengthened away in the final eighth of a mile before galloping out strongly into the turn.

“I told everyone, these are good horses but I thought the more distance would be better for my horse,” winning trainer Antonio Sano said. “When the horse ran six furlongs for the first time, he won easy, but that was a maiden special weight. The next race the horse was not ready. He did not work every day because [we had] the option to sell the horse. The horse was not sold. I told the owner, we'll enter Jan. 1 for one mile. Castellano worked the horse. He's a special horse, a very good horse.”

France Weiner, who also bred 2005 GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Closing Argument (Successful Appeal) with her husband Irwin, acquired Simply Confection for $80,000 carrying this colt in utero at Keeneland November in 2018. Simplification, whose second dam was a full-sister to champion Ashado, has a yearling half-sister by Mendelssohn that RNAd for $190,000 at FTSAUG last summer and a yearling filly by Audible. The mare is due to Union Rags. The winner is bred on the reverse cross of leading freshman sire Gun Runner.
