Above The Curve Makes All For Prix Corrida Triumph, Nashwa Eclipsed In Fourth

Last term's G1 Prix Saint-Alary and G2 Blandford S. heroine Above The Curve (American Pharoah–Fabulous {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) encountered stellar opposition in Sunday's G2 Prix Corrida at Saint-Cloud and halted a three-race losing streak with a pillar-to-post victory in the 10 1/2-furlong contest.

Coolmore and Westerberg's 'TDN Rising Star' was undone by Saint-Alary runner-up Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and the reopposing Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) when third in October's G1 Prix de l'Opera before running seventh in both November's GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and this month's G2 Mooresbridge S. on seasonal return last time.

The eventual winner was swiftly into stride and held sway at a comfortable pace. In command throughout, the 47-10 chance was shaken up when threatened at the top of the straight and stayed on relentlessly under a drive inside the final quarter-mile to hit the line strong with a two-length buffer from Mqse De Sevigne (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). German raider India (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) kept on well to finish one length adrift third while 'TDN Risng Star' Nashwa, who held every chance turning for home, faded out of contention in the latter stages and finished another 1 1/4 lengths back in fourth.

“I am delighted to win this race for Joseph O'Brien and in these famous silks too,” said Maxime Guyon. “We used to ride together and know each other very well indeed. He said that she is a very straightforward filly with a huge action and to go on if nobody wanted the lead. She travelled beautifully and quickened well. She had the race in the bag quite early.”

Hollie Doyle, reflecting on a satisfactory return to action for G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Nassau S. heroine Nashwa, added, “She's a big, burly mare and I think she just got tired. She's grown a lot and has put on a lot of weight. She had a busy year last year and was coming back off her first proper break. She probably needed the run and I think she'll come on for it.”

Muhaarar’s Trevaunance Wins The Nonette

Returning to the scene of her success in the G3 Prix de Psyche Aug. 2, Moyglare Stud's Trevaunance (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}–Liber Nauticus {Ire}, by Azamour {Ire}) showed her love of Deauville by making all in Saturday's 10-furlong G2 Prix de la Nonette. Allowed to bowl along under Tony Piccone, the Jessica Harrington-trained homebred was too strong in the straight and hit the line with two lengths to spare over Mqse De Sevigne (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), who had been a short neck behind her when filling the same position in the Psyche. There was another 3/4 of a length back to Agave (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in third.

What’s In a Name: Mqse De Sevigne (Ire)

It is the sometimes disputed call of history that the pen is mightier than the sword, but it is undeniable that the simple act of writing very, very well may lead you to fame and maybe a bit of immortality. The brilliant winner of the G3 Prix Vanteaux, Mqse De Sevigne (Ire), is on such a similar journey to renown.

Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sevigne, also widely known as Madame de Sevigne, that the winning filly is named after wrote many private letters, mainly to her beloved daughter. The missives must have been very good, as they were shown around even during her lifetime and eventually published after her death, even in translations.

Let's hope this 3-year-old filly will keep sending good notices from the tracks, winning some more races for the great lady who missed her daughter so much and loved her so well.

Siyouni’s Mqse de Sevigne Equals Vanteaux Record For Fabre

Baron Edouard de Rothschild's homebred 3-year-old filly Mqse de Sevigne (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), who bettered a Sept. 2 debut third over one mile at ParisLongchamp with a Sept. 29 seven-furlong breakthrough win at Chantilly, returned to scene of her unveiling to secure a career high in Sunday's G3 Prix Vanteaux. Breaking well and settling third after the early skirmishes, the 39-5 chance made stealthy progress in the straight and ran on strongly once coming under pressure for her challenge approaching the eighth pole to comfortably assert superiority by 1 1/2 lengths and a short neck from Know Thyself (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Hot Queen (Fr) (Recorder {GB}). The win provided trainer Andre Fabre with a record-equalling seventh victory in the nine-furlong contest.

“She was a shade unlucky when encountering two good fillies first time out and won nicely on her second start last year,” said winning owner and France Galop president Baron Edouard de Rothschild. “She has developed into a handsome-looking filly over the winter and I think she won very well today. Her dam belonged to my father [Baron Guy de Rothschild] and has already produced Meandre, so I don't think staying further will be a problem for her. She's entered in the [June 19 G1] Prix de Diane [at Chantilly], of course, but we'll not commit to anything just yet. We shall take time to see how she comes out of this race and will, in time, decide which route to take.”

Mqse de Sevigne, who becomes the 30th pattern-race winner for her sire, is the ninth of 10 foals and one of six scorers out of Listed Prix de Thiberville and Listed Prix Occitanie runner-up Penne (Fr) (Sevres Rose {Ire}), herself a half-sister to the dam of Listed Prix de la Californie and Listed Prix Omnium II victor Gris Tendre (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}). The February-foaled homebred bay, who hails from the direct damline of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix de Diane heroine Apollonia (Fr) (Djebel {Fr}), is a half-sister to four-time Group 1 winner Meandre (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}), Listed River Eden Fillies' S. runner-up Dogma (Fr) (Mount Nelson {GB}) and the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Une Fausse Venus (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}).
