Rushing Fall Shatters Course Record in Jenny Wiley Repeat

Already a Grade I winner at ages two, three and four, ‘TDN Rising Star’ Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) made it four straight seasons at the highest level with a record-setting victory in the GI Coolmore Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland Saturday, which she also won last season. Away in good order, the 4-5 chalk was hot on pacesetting Jolie Olimpica (Brz)’s (Drosselmeyer) tail in second with Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}) to her inside through upbeat fractions of :23.42 and :46.94. Ranging up to look Jolie Olimpica in the eye turning for home, Rushing Fall engaged in a brief battle with her foe, but shut the door on her by mid-stretch and drew clear to win by 3/4 of a length. Her final time of 1:39.02 shattered the previous course record for a mile of 1:40.30 set by Quiet Resolve (Affirmed) in 2000.

“It’s a dream come true,” said owner Bob Edwards of e Five Racing. “Everyone wishes for a horse like this. I hope I get another one in my racing career like her. This is just phenomenal. We’re all sitting around watching it at the house…I’m still shaking. The adrenaline spike is still there even when you’re watching from your couch. And not a terrible day for Chad [Brown]!”

Kicking off her 2019 season with a victory in this race, Rushing Fall followed suit with a win in Belmont’s GI Just a Game S. last June and was second to her champion stablemate Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie {Ire}) in Saratoga’s GI Diana S. Closing out last term with a fourth to another champion barnmate in Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) in this venue’s GI First Lady S. in October, the bay opened this term with a wire-to-wire victory in Belmont’s GIII Beaugay S. June 3.

Pedigree Notes:

Rushing Fall’s female family has dabbled in the spotlight for many years, long before her dam, Autumnal, produced the five-time Grade I winner and 2014 SW & three-time GSP Milam (Street Sense). Autumnal’s dam, Marie J, made headlines in 1997 when she sold for $1 million as a 2-year-old in training at that year’s Barretts March sale and then was named after the “Marie” half of prominent owners Aaron and Marie Jones, who bred Autumnal. The latter was sold as a 2004 Keeneland September yearling for $550,000. Rushing Fall is the brightest light in the most recent branches of the family, although Marie J’s half-sister did produce GISW Albert the Great (Go for Gin). Autumnal has had only two foals since Rushing Fall was born in 2015, including a full-brother to the Jenny Wiley winner born this year. Rushing Fall is one of 202 black-type winners–91 graded–for dual hemisphere super sire More Than Ready.

Will Take Charge Filly Fastest At Second OBS July Under Tack Session

Hip No. 245, a daughter of Will Take Charge consigned by Top Line Sales, LLC, Agent, worked a quarter in :20 4/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the second session of the under tack show for Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 July Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age. The chestnut filly is out of stakes winner Tensas Harbor, by Private Vow, a half sister to stakes placed Harbor Pilot.

A pair of horses breezed quarters in :21 flat.

Two-Time Champion Sprinter Roy H Retired

Roy H (More Than Ready), champion sprinter of 2017 and 2018, has been retired at age eight, trainer Peter Miller said in a statement Thursday.

“It is with some sadness but also great joy that we announce the retirement of Roy H from racing,” Miller said. “What can you say about a horse like this who has given us so many thrilling moments? He is the embodiment of class and we will definitely miss seeing him compete. Fortunately, we will not have to miss him for long as he will be retired as a barn pony and remain a very important part of our team. He is a ‘favorite son’ among our staff and the feeling seems to be mutual as Roy H loves to be around the other horses and loves to train.”

Bought for $310,000 at the 2014 Keeneland April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, Roy H campaigned for Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen. He picked up his first stakes win in the 2017 GII True North S. and followed with victories in the GI Santa Anita Sprint Championship S. and GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He repeated in both of those events in 2018 and last raced when capturing the GII Palos Verdes S. last January.

“He gave Rockingham Ranch and me a tremendous ride,” Miller added. “It was both an honor and a pleasure to train such a magnificent animal. He is sound and healthy and this seemed like the right time to make this change in his career. We’ve had him since he was a 2-year-old, so watching him grow and mature into a world champion has been a great gift.”

Roy H retires with a record of 23/10-5-2 and earnings of $3,139,765.

Cafe Americana: Pharoah Colt Takes Unicorn S.

The undefeated SW Café Pharoah (American Pharoah), the even-money pick in Tokyo’s 1600-meter G3 Unicorn S., made that price look like a gift on Sunday, as he won that Japanese Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifier by five easy lengths and set a new stakes record in the process (1:34.90). Dieu du Vin (Jpn) (Declaration of War) was second, 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Kenshinko (Jpn) (Pyro), as American-bred sires were responsible for the first three home. It was the first winner on dirt at the graded/group level for his Ashford Stud-based sire.

The $475,000 OBSMAR breezer was aggressive from the bell and was a good four paths off the fence in a battling fifth through a first quarter in :23 flat. Still shooting the breeze out in the middle of the course nearing the bend, he was full of run as he tugged his way up to second with the first three furlongs covered in :34.20. Able to sit just off the flank of the pacesetting filly and 2-1 second choice Lecce Baroque (Uncle Mo) on the turn while finally saving a bit of ground, Café Pharoah took dead aim and cruised past in a few strides at the 400-meter pole, pouring it on through the stretch to win with ears pricked. Dieu du Vin and Kenshinko unleashed good closing efforts for place and show honors, but they were never going to touch the winner.

“I had a good start, but I had a fast horse inside and used my mount to get [into] second,” jockey Damian Lane told Yahoo Japan. “Still, after I got second, the pace was slow. I was worried about the reaction when I first used my mount, but I was relaxed even when I entered the straight and [he] responded 300 metres out.”

A 10-length winner at first asking going 1800 meters at Nakayama Dec. 14, the bay earned 30 points on the Japanese Road to the Kentucky Derby with a victory in the Listed Hyacinth S. cut back to a mile Feb. 23. After Sunday’s score, he now has 80 points and sits atop the point standings in Japan, with just the July 8 Japan Dirt Derby (40-16-8-4) at Ohi remaining in the series.

One of seven stakes winner for his sire, Horse of the Year and 2015 Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah, Café Pharoah is the fourth group or graded winner, and first in Japan. American Pharoah’s Sweet Melania, who won the GII Jessamine S. at Keeneland at two, added the GIII Wonder Again S. at Belmont Park June 20. He also has GII Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint victor Four Wheel Drive Stateside-also out of a More Than Ready mare–and the G3 Prix du Bois hero Maven at Chantilly in France.

The fifth foal of his dam, who won the GII Mrs. Revere S. and GIII Boiling Springs S. and placed in both the GIII Lake George S. and GIII Athenia S., Café Pharoah is a half-brother to the gelded GIII Dania Beach S. and GIII Transylvania S. hero Night Prowler (Giant’s Causeway), as well as the 4-year-old filly Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom), who saluted the judge in the GII Lake Place S. and GIII Lake George S., both at Saratoga. His year-younger Uncle Mo half-brother died, while Mary’s Follies, a granddaughter of Wavering Monarch MSW Wave to the Queen, has since produced a yearling colt by Candy Ride (Arg) and a colt by Connect Apr. 16.
