Miss Wild Is First Winner For Taylor Made’s Mshawish

Taylor Made Stallions' Mshawish, a multiple Grade 1 winner by Medaglia d'Oro, sired his first winner when Miss Wild posted a dominating 15-length victory in her career debut at Monmouth Park on Sunday, Aug. 9.

A homebred for New Farm, Miss Wild broke smartly in the six-furlong event and scampered clear of her rivals downs the backstretch. Never threatened, she stretched her advantage to nine lengths in the lane, rolling to an eye-catching score under Tomas Mejia.

Bred in Kentucky, Miss Wild is produced from the winning Wildcat Heir mare Proud to be Wild.

Mshawish, a Grade 1 winner on both dirt and turf, captured five graded stakes on multiple surfaces and seven stakes overall in a spectacular racing career. He earned a 106 Beyer in a decisive win the 2016 Grade 1 Donn Handicap in just his third lifetime start on the dirt and annexed the G1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap the year prior, recording a 104 Beyer.

He also registered graded wins in the G2 Zabeel Mile at Meydan, the G2 Fort Lauderdale Stakes, and the G3 Hal's Hope Stakes at Gulfstream. In addition, he won the Prix de Tourgeville S. at Deauville and the El Prado S. and placed in the G1 Dubai Turf.

Mshawish retired with eight wins from 24 starts and earnings of $2,421,351. He is by Medaglia d'Oro out of the Thunder Gulch mare Thunder Bayou and hails from the immediate family of champion Halfbridled and multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire Lu Ravi.

Ben Perkins Jr., New Farm Team For Four-Win Day At Monmouth

Ben Perkins, Jr. has been training long enough to know that his business is filled with ups and downs. But the veteran conditioner, who has won more than 1,500 career races, hasn't had many down years like he did in 2019.

Of course, he hasn't had many up moments quite like the one he is experiencing now.

Perkins saddled four winners on Sunday's card at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., after having two on Saturday, and has now won with seven of his past nine starters.

A year ago, the longtime Monmouth-based Perkins was just 2-of-18 at the meet. He's 9-for-19 this year.

“They're in the right spots,” said Perkins. “It kind of all came together at once. Every winner before Amatteroftime won (Sunday's second race) was a maiden, too. We have a bunch of maidens. After not winning races last year this is what we were doing – we were getting them ready.”

In addition to Amatteroftime ($11.40), Perkins clicked with Heir Port ($3.80) in the fourth race and Miss Wild ($3.80) in the sixth. He added an upset on the turf when Joe Bravo roused Reconvene ($20.80) with a prolonged stretch run in the seventh.

This is how hot Perkins is: The only race he lost Sunday was to himself, with Evil Monkey finishing third in the race won by Amatteroftime.

“Last year we had some nice young horses and bought some nice ones but it took some time to get them ready,” he said. “This year, not being able to run anywhere else (because of COVID-19), when we came here I knew we would win a fair amount of races. A lot of them were ready to run in April.”

Perkins won with two of his three starters on Saturday's card – both maidens, including 24-1 shot Jesters Honor – and scored with his only starter last Sunday. That adds up to seven winners the past nine starts.

“They're all bunched up now that we can run them,” he said. “This business is ups and downs. Last year was certainly a down.”

The past week has been a remarkable up – even for someone with more than 8,000 career starters.

Paco Lopez Taken To Hospital Following Monmouth Park Spill

Jockey Paco Lopez, leading rider at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., was taken by ambulance to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch for X-rays and evaluation after suffering an apparent right elbow injury following a spill in the 10th race on Saturday's card, according to Dr. Angelo Chinnici, the track's medical director.

Lopez, whose 31 winners at the meet are more than double that of his next closest competitor, went down after his mount, Pretendant, appeared to clip heels in tight quarters and fell midway through the final turn of the mile and a sixteenth race.

Pretendant was in the middle of a condensed pack with four other horses when the colt appeared to clip heels with Bob In Our Midst.

Lopez, seeking a seventh riding title at Monmouth Park, also leads all riders in earnings this meet with $1,377,980.

Golden Pal Nunthorpe-Bound

Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), runner up behind The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) in the June 19 G2 Nortfolk S. at Royal Ascot, will make his next start in York’s G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. Aug. 21. The juvenile had been scheduled to contest this weekend’s Tyro S. at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, however, was withdrawn after the race came off the turf due to heavy rain.

Trainer Wesley Ward has finished second in two prior tries in five-furlong Nunthorpe with Acapulco (Scat Daddy) and Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy).

“He worked unbelievably well last week,” said Ward, explaining the colt’s latest work over Saratoga’s Oklahoma track Aug. 2. “He started off 15 lengths behind two of [trainer] Todd Pletcher’s horses and finished right up on their heels–it was a little bit too big of a work, to be honest. After that, we decided we’d run him at home instead in the Tyro S., but they have now moved the race off the grass, so we scratched.”

Looking ahead to the Nunthorpe, Ward added, “He’ll have a little breeze [Sunday morning] and away we go. We have 13 days until the race and all we want is to keep him in the shape he is in right now–he really looks fantastic.”
