Derbe Glass Breaks Through With First Winner At Monmouth Park

As patient as Derbe Glass said she was trying to be as she waited for her first win as a professional jockey, she was starting to get a little anxious about when it would finally happen.

It did Friday night, on her 13th career mount, as the 23-year-old split horses in mid-stretch to guide I See the Stars to a neck victory in the final race on Monmouth Park's six-race Friday twilight card in Oceanport, N.J.

“I'm just very happy,” she said. “It's a combination of exhilaration and relief.”

The Wilmington, Del, native, in her first full year of riding, had come close at the Monmouth meet with three seconds and two thirds from her first 12 mounts. This time she found a way to break through.

“The win was important but the key for me is to keep improving and to keep progressing,” she said. “That's how I kept from getting too frustrated, knowing that every ride I've had has been a learning experience.”

Glass rode in two amateur races in 2019, winning one at Parx, and had planned to continue riding on the amateur circuit last year until COVID-19 derailed those plans.

“So I came to Monmouth Park and started galloping horses and I fell in love with the place and the people here were great to me,” she said. “This year I just felt it was time (to ride professionally). I'd been galloping horses for five or six years. I felt like it was time to try. I picked up a good agent (Steve Worsley) and here we are.”

I See the Stars paid $11.20 to win.

Part of the “welcome party” that helped Derbe Glass make her first winner a memorable one

‘Matured’ Hot Rod Charlie Could Run Without Blinkers In Haskell

Third in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Belmont Stakes, Hot Rod Charlie has been confirmed for the G1 Haskell Invitational on July 17 after a six-furlong work in 1:11.60 this Friday, reports bloodhorse.com. The 3-year-old son of Oxbow will breeze at Santa Anita again on July 9, then fly east the following day.

Trainer Doug O'Neill was extremely pleased with the colt's penultimate breeze, for which jockey Flavien Prat was aboard. Hot Rod Charlie went without blinkers, as he has several times this year, and O'Neill is strongly considering removing the equipment for the Haskell.

“It's one of those deals where the blinkers helped him focus and become the racehorse he's become, but as he has matured, Flavien says he seems very happy without them,” O'Neill told bloodhorse.com. “We're hoping that obviously with some of these stretch duels that racing without them will tip us over onto the winning end of a stretch duel. We just wanted to try it in the mornings. So far, it's been a good experience. As it stands right now, more than likely 'Charlie' will run without blinkers in the Haskell.”

The Haskell is a “Win and You're In” race for the Breeders' Cup Classic this fall at Del Mar. Other top 3-year-olds under consideration for the nine-furlong contest include Mandaloun and Rombauer.

BetMakers’ Dallas Baker Talks Fixed-Odds Wagering On Writers’ Room

Sorely needed in the American horse betting landscape, fixed-odds wagering–bets where the player is guaranteed the odds displayed at the time he or she bets a horse and isn't affected by late parimutuel odds drops–is set to debut in the States later this month at Monmouth Park via Australian bookmaking company BetMakers. Wednesday morning, BetMakers' head of international operations Dallas Baker joined the TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland to discuss the logistics of implementing a fixed-odds system to try to replicate its success in Australia, how confident he is that the technology will eventually be adopted nationwide, potential crossover with traditional sportsbooks and more.

Calling in via Zoom as the Green Group Guest of the Week, Baker explained how a horseplayer at Monmouth can place a fixed-odds bet, saying, “There will be separate tellers for tote bets and fixed-odds bets, but you just go up to the teller as you normally would with a tote bet and say, 'I want $20 to win on number one in race one' or whatever it is, and away you go. There will be displays all around the course with what the fixed-odds market is. When you're betting fixed odds, the price at that time is the price you get, which is very important to the customer, but you'll also get to see the most recent fluctuations of that horse, since it's a liquid market. So you'll get an idea about what the popularity or the unpopularity of that horse has been as well.”

One of BetMakers' ultimate goals is to have fixed-odds wagering be available and attractive for sports bettors, and Baker said carving out even a small slice of the exploding sports betting market in America would be a major boon to racing.

“We've seen this great boom of sports betting in the past three years since PASPA [the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which effectively banned sports betting outside of a few states] was repealed, and the team that repealed it has been part of our team,” he said. “If you look in New Jersey alone, at the moment we're seeing close to $1 billion a month that's being invested in sports betting. As a racing industry, if we can tap into that and be moderately successful, get 10% of that figure, that's another $100 million being invested into racing, which, with the right modeling, can then go back towards funding the sport. The key to getting the sports gambler is giving the bookmakers something to market and fixed-odds betting is something the bookmakers want to market. I've spoken to a lot of the betting firms and they say they actually want to spend the majority of their marketing budget in the next few years on horse racing. That opens up a whole new gambit of people and organizations with deep pockets who really want to aggressively market racing to acquire new clients.”

Elsewhere on the show, which is also sponsored by West Point Thoroughbreds, the Minnesota Racehorse Engagement Project and Legacy Bloodstock, the writers laid out what to watch for on a blockbuster holiday weekend of racing, analyzed the most recent story about Bob Baffert in the Washington Post and announced a special on-scene show for the Writers' Room's upcoming 100th episode. Mandaloun, Rombauer Top 16 Nominees To Haskell

Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, Preakness winner Rombauer and the runners-up from all three Triple Crown races top the list of 16 nominations to the $1 million TVG.com Haskell Stakes on July 17 at Monmouth Park, racing secretary John Heims and stakes coordinator Dove Ward announced Wednesday.

The Grade 1 Haskell Stakes is a “Win And You're In” race for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Medina Spirit, trained by Bob Baffert, has not raced since winning the Kentucky Derby on May 1. Baffert has won the Haskell a record nine times. Baffert has indicated that the Haskell may come “too soon” for Medina Spirit.

Rombauer finished third in the Belmont Stakes after pulling off a mild surprise in the Preakness by winning at odds of 11-1. Michael McCarthy trains the Kentucky-bred son of Twirling Candy.

The connections of Kentucky Derby runner-up Mandaloun, Preakness runner-up Midnight Bourbon and Belmont Stakes runner-up Hot Rod Charlie have all indicated they are strongly considering the Haskell Stakes, as are the connections of Rombauer, according to Heims.

Mandaloun prepped for Monmouth Park's showcase event by winning the TVG.com Pegasus Stakes at the track on June 13.

Louisiana Derby winner Hot Rod Charlie, third in the Kentucky Derby, waged an epic stretch battle with Essential Quality in the Belmont Stakes before grudgingly giving way late and finishing second.

The Haskell Stakes, at a mile and an eighth, headlines a card that includes the Grade 1 United Nations at a mile and three-eighths on the grass. The United Nations closed with 22 nominations.

There are three other graded stakes races on the Haskell undercard.

The full list of nominations to the 54th TVG.com Haskell Stakes:
