Gov. Murphy Signs Bill Approving Fixed Odds at Monmouth

Fixed Odds wagering will be available at Monmouth Park in the coming weeks after Gov. Philip Murphy signed legislation Thursday approving the new bet, with implementation awaiting regulatory approval from the New Jersey Racing Commission and the Division of Gaming Enforcement.

Monmouth Park, working in conjunction with BetMakers Technology Group, will be the first racetrack in the country to offer Fixed Odds wagering, a popular bet in Europe and Australia.

“We appreciate the continued support from Gov. Murphy and the state legislature, as well as Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Senate President Steve Sweeney, in advancing Fixed Odds wagering,” said Dennis Drazin, Chairman and CEO of Darby Development LLC, the operator of Monmouth Park. “It provides our patrons with another wagering option that we firmly believe will be a popular one.”

The bill was co-sponsored by state assemblymen Ronald S. Dancer and Ralph R. Caputo and state senators Vin Gopal and Paul A. Sarlo.

Fixed Odds wagering allows bettors to retain the odds at the time of their bet, as opposed to pari-mutuel wagering, where odds are not finalized until betting is completed.

When it is available at Monmouth Park, Fixed Odds will be offered on win, place and show betting at the outset, with a minimum wager of $1. There will be designated Fixed Odds windows throughout the Grandstand and Clubhouse, with televisions displaying the current Fixed Odds.

Monmouth Park will also show the Fixed Odds for each race during the track's in-house televised feed of races.

Fixed Odds wagering will begin with Monmouth Park races, with the expectation that it will expand to other tracks that enter into an agreement to permit Fixed Odds wagering on their races.

NYRA To Host Cross-Breed Cross Country Pick 5 On Aug. 7

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host an all-stakes cross-breed Cross Country Pick 5 featuring Thoroughbred racing from historic Saratoga Race Course and Monmouth Park and Standardbred racing from the Meadowlands on Aug. 7.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/saratoga/racing/cross-country-wagers.

Current New York State regulations allow NYRA to accept wagering only on Standardbred races that take place in New York. As such, the cross-breed Cross Country Pick 5 will not be available on-track at Saratoga or to NYRA Bets customers located in New York State. The cross-breed Cross Country Pick 5 is available to NYRA Bets, LLC customers outside of New York State.

Saratoga will kick off the sequence in a big way, offering up the Grade 1, $1 million Saratoga Derby Invitational for 3-year-olds going 1 3/16 miles on the Mellon turf course in Race 9 at 5:10 p.m. Eastern. The middle jewel of NYRA's Turf Triple series drew an accomplished 11-horse field offering some of the top grass sophomores on either side of the Atlantic.

Internationally acclaimed trainer Aidan O'Brien will send out Bolshoi Ballet, who won the first leg of this series by capturing the 10-furlong G1 Belmont Derby Invitational in July. Ryan Moore, a three-time champion jockey in his native Great Britain, will return to ride. Cadillac, an Irish-bred son of Lope de Vega, cruised to victory in the one-mile G2 Champions Juvenile in September at Leopardstown for trainer Jessica Harrington. On the domestic side, the Kentucky-bred Du Jour, the winner of the 1 1/16-mile G2 American Turf in May at Churchill Downs, will be running for the first time since finishing fourth in the Belmont Derby for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.

Monmouth, located in Oceanport, N.J., will also get in on the stakes action in the second leg as a field of 10 juveniles will compete in the $100,000 Tyro sprinting five furlongs on the turf in Race 12 at 5:26 p.m. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, who entered Thursday with 9,443 wins as he approaches Dale Baird's all-time record of 9,445, will send out Vodka N Water, who will be looking for a bit of racing luck after running second in all four of his career starts, including last out in the G3 Bashford Manor at Churchill. Forty Stripes, a first-out winner last month at Monmouth for Hall of Fame conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer, will make his first stakes appearance and Wesley Ward will saddle a pair of fillies in maiden winner Chi Town Lady and Her World, a first-time starter purchased for $400,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Harness racing will add a new wrinkle to the Cross Country Pick 5, with the Meadowlands hosting the $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks for 3-year-old fillies in the prestigious race for trotters in Race 14 at 5:32 p.m. Bella Bellini is the 3-1 morning-line favorite. Lady Chaos is the second choice at 7-2.

The featured race on Saratoga's loaded Saturday card will comprise the fourth leg of the wager, with the G1 Whitney in Race 10 at 5:48 p.m. The 1 1/8-mile contest for older horses drew a talented five-horse field led by 6-5 morning-line favorite Knicks Go, who won last year's G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland before capturing the G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational to start his 5-year-old year in January at Gulfstream. Knicks Go, conditioned by reigning Eclipse Award-champion trainer Brad Cox, drew post 4.

Five-time graded stakes-winner Maxfield, listed at 8-5, drew the outside post for trainer Brendan Walsh. Defending Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Swiss Skydiver will look for similar success for trainer Kenneth McPeek. Silver State, trained by Asmussen, and By My Standards [Bret Calhoun] will also look to make an impact.

Standardbreds will close out the Cross Country Pick 5 with the 96th running of the $1 million Hambletonian for trotters in Race 15 at 6:02 p.m. The Hambletonian, one of harness racing's best-known events, originated in Syracuse in 1926 and has been held at the Meadowlands since 1981. Ake Svanstedt holds a strong hand with 3-1 morning-line favorite Captain Corey and second-choice Delayed Hanover [7-2].

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

The Cross Country Pick 5 will continue each Saturday throughout the year. For more information, visit NYRABets.com.

Veteran Jockey Mitchell Warming Up To New Surroundings At Monmouth Park

After seven years of struggling to get live mounts at Gulfstream Park, jockey Richard Mitchell decided it was time to change things up this year. But there was one condition to wherever he headed next: It had to be a track that raced in warm weather.

Monmouth Park's summer meet met that requirement.

The 49-year-old native of Portmore, Jamaica, says his stipulation for riding in warm weather is strictly a medical need – the result of too many spills over a lengthy riding career.

“I have so much metal in my body that I can't take the cold,” said Mitchell, who estimates he won more than 600 races at Caymanas Park in Jamaica before moving to Gulfstream in 2014. “I have a screw in my shoulder, a plate in my hip, metal in my face and pelvis. You name it I probably have metal there.

“That's why I don't travel to cold weather tracks. Temperatures in the low 60s are okay. But when it gets in the 50s or lower it just hurts too much. My whole body hurts when it starts to get colder.”

This much is certain: Monmouth Park followers are warming up to Mitchell.

After winning just 32 races from 831 mounts at Gulfstream from 2014 through 2020, Mitchell is 4-for-20 since arriving at Monmouth Park on June 27 and 5-for-25 overall this year (with another win at Parx).

In his best year at Gulfstream he won nine races from 235 mounts.

He is also largely responsible for Friday's six-race card offering the enticement of a $201,241 Pick 5 carryover that starts in the second race. During Sunday's early Pick 5 sequence, Mitchell booted home Quintarelli ($44.60) and then won with Fighting Heart ($52.80) on the turf, contributing significantly to the resulting carryover.

“Whenever I win it feels joyful,” said Mitchell, who serves as his own agent. “I appreciate the people at Monmouth Park giving me a chance. I wasn't getting enough good mounts at Gulfstream. It's very hard to break in there.

“(Trainer) Rohan Crichton (a fellow Jamaican) told me he would use me on some of his horses if I came to Monmouth Park and that I could also gallop for him. I saw it as an opportunity to try something new. I have been galloping for some of the Jamaican trainers here and have kept busy and now more people have noticed me and they have given me a chance.”

The four winners Mitchell has recorded at the Monmouth Park meet so far have gone off at 15-1, 27-1, 21-1 and 25-1. All have been for different trainers.

One of the trainers he has caught the attention of is Monmouth Park first-timer Rafael Schistl. Fighting Heart, one of Mitchell's longshot winners last Sunday, is trained by Schistl.

“He's hungry, experienced, light, needs money and wants to work – so I am hiring to work for me on salary and to ride first call for me,” said Schistl. “He's going to win 20 races this meet. He knows the game and he wants to succeed.

“I have already had some of the top trainers here come to me and ask about him. I told them all the same thing: `Use this guy.' ”

Mitchell has one mount in Friday's anticipated Pick 5 sequence, riding Misspotofgold in the fourth race for owner-trainer Clarence B. King.

Miss Alacrity Gets First Stakes Win In Colleen At Monmouth

Miss Alacrity didn't win Sunday's $100,000 Colleen Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. by quite as big a margin as she did in her debut on May 20, but the Wesley Ward-trainee was nonetheless impressive once again.

Disposing of the early speed horse, Kodama, coming out of the final turn, Miss Alacrity went on to an easy 2¾-lengths victory in the 83rd edition of the Colleen Stakes for 2-year-old fillies going five furlongs on the turf.

The unbeaten daughter of Munnings won her debut by 10 lengths on the dirt. She had no problems transitioning to the grass.

“This is a very nice filly,” said winning rider Paco Lopez. “She has a lot of talent. Wesley Ward had her ready. She was a little green but she is very talented. I can feel it. I was aggressive early because that's how she likes to run but I did not have to make the lead.

“I stayed close to (Kodama) because I know that filly has a lot of speed and I wanted to make sure she didn't get too far away. But this filly was too good. She can hook horses and still have plenty left. You can tell she's a good one.”

Sent off as the 11-10 favorite in the field of seven, Miss Alacrity stayed with the early pace set by Kodama and Tizplenty through an opening quarter in :21:20. The duel came down to Kodama and Miss Alacrity after an opening half in :44.74, at which time Kodama backed out.

Miss Alacrity covered the distance in :57.23 over a turf course listed as firm.

Sail By rallied from far back to get second, 2¼ lengths ahead of Tizplenty.

Owned by CJ Thoroughbreds, Miss Alacrity paid $4.20, $2.80, and $2.40. Sail by paid $4.60 and $3.20. Tizplenty paid $3.00 to show.
