Rapid-Fire Second Winner for Arrogate

AFFABLE MONARCH (c, 2, Arrogate–Social Queen {MGSW, $344,164}, by Dynaformer) gave his late sire (by Unbridled's Song) a second first-crop winner at Monmouth Park about 30 minutes after Adversity broke the mold up at Saratoga. The Colts Neck homebred, off at 13-5, was beaten for speed and trailed behind a quick pace through the opening exchanges. Equipped with a shadow roll for this first go, the gray colt made stealthy inside progress leaving the three-eighths pole, got through an inviting opening at the inside with a little less than a quarter-mile to race and careered away from his rivals to score by 6 1/2 lengths. Pioneer of Medina (Pioneerof the Nile) was second, while fast-working and regally bred favorite Courvoisier (Tapit–Take Charge Brandi) was third. The winner's dam was a dual Grade III winner on the turf, including the GIII Eatontown H. at this venue before going on to produce fellow turfer Force the Pass (Speightstown), GISW, $1,359,114, who stood his first season at stud in Maryland in 2020 before being sold to Saudi Arabia. Herself a daughter of SW and GSP Gal On the Go (Irgun), Social Queen is the dam of a yearling full-brother to Force the Pass (hip 154 in Keeneland September), was barren to Quality Road for this year and was most recently covered by Improbable. Double Thunder Rallies Late To Take Sapling At Monmouth

In a field of 2-year-olds going a mile for the first time, favorite Double Thunder grabbed his third win in four starts with a late rally to win the Sapling Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the Super Saver colt had to go three-wide on the far turn to find running room, giving Monmouth's leading jockey Paco Lopez another win at the track's summer meet.

Breaking from post one, Lopez took Double Thunder back early, sitting fifth on the rail behind leaders Under the Gun and Midnight Worker. After fractions of :23.87 for the first quarter and :47.54 for the half mile, Double Thunder was boxed in on the rail and shuffled back to sixth entering the far turn as Midnight Worker caught Under the Gun and moved to the lead, Chancellor Bay tracking him.

On the turn, Lopez moved his colt to the outside, going three-wide to find racing room as the field entered the stretch. Into the Monmouth straight, Chancellor Bay took over the lead from Midnight Worker as both American Sanctuary and Double Thunder rallied to his outside, both catching Chancellor Bay in the last sixteenth of a mile. Double Thunder was fastest to the wire, sprinting by American Sanctuary to win the Sapling by a half-length.

Double Thunder paid $4.20, $2.60, and $2.40. American Sanctuary paid $4.80 and $3.40. Midnight Worker paid $3.60.

“In the mornings it took him a little while to figure things out but his gate works showed he was probably going to be okay. I don't think there was any concern about going two turns for the first time. If you look at all of his races it seems like he breaks a little slow, a step slow, but he always seems to come running. So I didn't think that would be an issue. We were actually waiting for him to go longer. I'm pleased with the way he ran. He took dirt, he got in trouble by coming in and going out, so it wasn't the best of trips and he still won,” Anthony Sciametta, assistant to Todd Pletcher, said after the Sapling.

“It was a tough trip for sure. They didn't make it easy for him. The horse broke well today. I was surprised he broke that well – maybe because he was on the rail. I don't know. I didn't want him that close early so I tried to get him to settle but it was a very rough trip,” Paco Lopez told the Monmouth Press Office after the race. “For a while a had nowhere to go. (American Sanctuary) had me pinned in. Finally, he made his move at the eighth pole and I was able to get some room to get my horse running. I think (American Sanctuary) moved a little too early, which was good for me. I had nowhere to go for a while. I was waiting on that horse and he finally went and that helped me.”

Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm and out of the Tapit mare Rattataptap, Double Thunder is owned by Phoenix Thoroughbred III. He was purchased by agent Gerard Butler from Taylor Made Sales Agency for $60,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Pays $3,774 To Winners

Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5 featuring action from four tracks paid $3,774.50 for selecting all five winners for the 50-cent wager. The total pool was $53,291 for the sequence that included races from Monmouth Park, Woodbine Racetrack, Ellis Park, and historic Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Monmouth, located in Oceanport, New Jersey, kicked things off when Dream About Me defeated favorite Endless Front by a half-length in a 1 1/16-mile maiden turf contest for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in Race 8. Trainer by Jimmy Toner and ridden by Isaac Castillo, Dream About Me rallied from seventh to complete the course in a final time of 1:45.48. She paid $13.20 on a $2 win wager.

Woodbine's Race 7 saw Hazelbrook record a 1 3/4-length win under Jason Hoyte in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden claiming contest for fillies and mares 3-and-up on the all-weather track. Hazelbrook, conditioned by Lorne Richards, paid $5 as she posted a final time of 1:16.42 at the Rexdale, Ontario-based course.

Action switched back to Monmouth for the wager's biggest upset when Trilogy edged Strong Breeze by a head to win a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for 3-years-old and up at 18-1 odds for trainer Ronald Abrams. Trilogy, piloted by Nik Juarez, returned $39.40. The Northern Afleet gelding posted a final time of 1:05.73.

Ellis Park was the site of the lone favorite to post a victory when Amiche won by 1 1/2 lengths in a one-mile turf maiden race for fillies and mares 3-and-up in Race 8. Trained by Cherie DeVaux and ridden by Brian Hernandez, Jr., Amiche went gate-to-wire in clocking in at 1:35.06 at the track in Henderson, Kentucky. She paid $3.60.

Baby Yoda closed the sequence at the Spa with an impressive 4 1/4-length win in a 6 1/2 furlong main track allowance sprint in Race 10. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Baby Yoda, under Jose Ortiz, surged to the wire in 1:14.33, returning $14.40. Baby Yoda earned a 114 Beyer Speed Figure for the win.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on track, on ADW platforms, and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

Value Proposition Best in Red Bank At Monmouth

Klaravich Stables' Value Proposition cruised home to a nearly three-length victory in the $150,000 Red Bank Stakes on Saturday afternoon at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

The Chad Brown-trainee was dispatched the 3-10 favorite in the field that scratched down to four runners. The 5-year-old ridgling stepped the flat mile over “good” turf in 1:38.18 and paid $2.60 and $2.10. Pacesetter Proven Strategies held for second and paid $2.60 to place, with Reconvene checking in third and Vanzzy rounding out the field. There was no show wagering.

“I just took a hold of him early on,” said winning jockey Paco Lopez, after riding his sixth winner of the day. “He was running so smoothly the whole way. When we got to the three-eighths pole, I moved him into position to strike and in the lane, he just cruised home. He was much the best and I rode him that way.”

A son of Dansili (GB) from the Diktat (GB) mare Dash To The Front (GB), Value Proposition improved his lifetime mark to 5-1-3 from 11 starts, good for earnings of $359,773.
