New Bay’s Bayside Boy Takes The QEII

One of last term's leading juveniles, Teme Valley and Ballylinch Stud's Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) took until Saturday to put it all together again as a 3-year-old and chose the big stage to do it on in Ascot's G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. He has now punched his ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland in November, if connections wish to travel.

Anchored in rear early by Tom Marquand after a tardy break, the 33-1 shot who had enjoyed a confidence-boosting success in Sandown's Listed Fortune S. Sept. 14 delivered a surge to overwhelm the long-time leader Jadoomi (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) inside the final 50 yards.

Going forward with real momentum at the line, the Roger Varian-trained bay who has been galvanised by blinkers had 1 1/4 lengths to spare there over the battling Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), with Jadoomi denied the runner's-up spot by a short head. In the case of the 11-10 favourite Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the writing was on the wall a long way out as she floundered after blowing the start and trailed in sixth.

“We thought he was a lively outsider–he needed to step up massively but he did have very good juvenile form,” Varian said. “We had high hopes for him this season, but he didn't enjoy the firm ground in the summer and the owners and the team at Ballylinch Stud have been very patient with him. He showed a great turn of foot there and I hope he is a horse who will still be with us next year.”

Bayside Boy had come out of his 2-year-old battles beaten more often than not, but even in his second in Newbury's Listed Washington Singer S. and his third placings in the G1 Dewhurst S. and G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy he had shown Classic potential. Beating Reach For the Moon (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in between in Doncaster's G2 Champagne S., he quickly vanished into obscurity following a fruitless summer campaign.

Drawn 14 of 15 in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains in which he beat only two rivals home at ParisLongchamp on May 15, he was seventh in the G1 St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot June 14 but was beaten less than two lengths and had briefly threatened on a surface that was too quick. If they were excusable, his fourth when favourite for Goodwood's G3 Thoroughbred S. July 29 was less so but again the ground was against him and a subsequent freshener and the fitting of headgear worked the oracle as he got his head back in front from the day's Balmoral H. runner-up Sweet Believer (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) last time.

If not as badly as Inspiral, who walked out of the stalls, Bayside Boy missed a beat at the start and with Jadoomi setting a slow tempo initially he was left with the proverbial sectionals mountain to climb. While Frankie was notably animated to his left approaching two out, Marquand was merely coaxing his mount ever closer and Bayside Boy was building confidence with every stride as he prepared to bridge a still-sizeable gap.

With such an advantage from early on, Jadoomi and Modern Games should have been able to dominate but the winner was ultimately a notch or two above on this ground and probably in terms of how the races panned out was the day's most impressive.

Marquand summed it up succinctly. “He showed a pretty exceptional turn of foot,” he said of the 11th 3-year-old to win this in the last 15 runnings. “From the two I was never not going to get there and he really enjoyed chasing them down–he sailed home.”

Charlie Appleby, who was taking this in en route to the Breeders' Cup Mile with Modern Games, was inclined to blame the easy surface for the defeat. “Will just said he is as tough as teak, but couldn't get his feet out of the ground unfortunately,” he commented. “He said that if the winner had come close to us, it would have been a different race again. It is the first time he has encountered ground that soft, but he's run a very creditable race and he'll go to the Breeders' Cup now. As we know, in Keeneland he might get the same conditions.”

Ed Crisford said of Jadoomi, “We are absolutely delighted with him. It can be a hard place to lead, but he popped out of the stalls and there wasn't any pace on so James [Doyle] said he was happy in front. Really, the winner came out of nowhere, but we've ran a cracking race and couldn't be happier. I think Keeneland will be the obvious place to go–coming round a bend might just play to his strengths and be the next step. He wants cut in the ground, that's the key. He had to find five or six pounds to be competitive with the top two in the betting and he has definitely improved again. He's a lightly-raced 4-year-old and there's no reason why he shouldn't improve again.”

The flop of Cheveley Park Stud's G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois heroine Inspiral was a surprise, but there had been an early warning sign about her stalls behaviour at the Royal meeting here and a disappointed treble-seeking Dettori was philosophical. “The gates opened and she didn't want to come out–it was one of those cigar moments,” he said. “The whole field went and I found myself last on a filly who needs cover. They went slow, I tried to creep into the race, but the race was done at the start. I don't know why she didn't want to come out, it's the first time she has done it. She's won two Group 1s and horses are not machines and sometimes they under-perform. That has left a sour taste.”

Bayside Boy's dam, the Listed Prix Occitanie scorer Alava (Ire) (Anabaa), is also responsible for the four-times pattern-race scorer Forest Ranger (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) who enjoyed ground on the easy side and captured two renewals of the 10-furlong G2 Huxley S. Alava, who also produced the listed-placed Home Cummins (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}), is out of the triple listed-placed Cerita (Ire) (Wolfhound) whose half-siblings include the G3 Prix de Flore scorer Tamise (Time For a Change) and the GII La Canada S. and GII El Encino S. runner-up Luthier's Launch (Relaunch).

Tamise is the second dam of the G3 Prix de Saint-Georges-winning sprinter Sestilio Jet (Fr) (French Fifteen {Fr}), while the family also features the GI Personal Ensign H. winner Passing Shot (A P Indy). Alava's 2-year-old colt Lord Of Biscay (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) was an impressive debut winner for Ballylinch Stud and this stable last month and has Classic pretensions. Her daughter of Waldgeist (GB) was a €200,000 purchase by Leason Bloodstock at the Goffs Orby last month, while she also has a 2022 full-sister by Lord Of Biscay.

Modern Games Anchors Appleby Breeders’ Cup Brigade

Godolphin's Breeders' Cup team from Charlie Appleby's Moulton Paddocks will be led by multiple Grade I winner Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Already successful at the Breeders' Cup with a score in the GI Juvenile Turf at Del Mar last November, the chestnut returned to Europe for his seasonal bow and claimed the G1 French 2000 Guineas at ParisLongchamp on May 15. Third in the G1 French Derby in June, Modern Games was fifth in the G1 Prix Jean Prat on July 10 and rebounded to take second behind Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood later that month. He made a second triumphant foray to North America with a 5 1/4-length victory in the GI Woodbine Mile S. in Canada on Sept. 17 and is an intended starter in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile.

“It's shaping up,” said Appleby on his raiding party bound for the States.

“The Breeders' Cup is always something that is on our minds at the start of the season and we like to try to pinpoint an older horse or 2-year-old for it. As I've always stated I'd rather turn up with one than six–one good one and have a good crack. And this year I feel like we've got some live contenders there.

“Modern Games [is] in the Mile–he is a deserved favourite as we stand. He's been there and done it as a juvenile and been over to Canada and done what he has done at Woodbine.”

He added on a possible run at Ascot prior to Keeneland's Breeders' Cup, “If we take in Champions Day then that would be an extra race on the list for him, but perfectly doable. But being perfectly honest our main target is [the] Breeders' Cup Mile with him.

“We'll sit and toy with the idea of sending Modern Games to the QEII. If it was good to soft the conversation would still be taking place, but there wouldn't be any certainty to it. If it was soft he wouldn't be turning up at all. It doesn't take much to change it, but if you are lucky enough to get a settled week you might end up on some half-sensible ground.”

Appleby boasts a high strike rate at the Breeders' Cup with six wins from just 11 runners. One horse that is likely for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is the G3 Solario S. hero Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), who most recently ran third to probable G1 Dewhurst S. pick Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster on Sept. 11. Less certain of a spot on the Keeneland team is GI Summer S. victor Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Appleby is also set to be represented in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint with G3 Sirenia S. hero and G1 Middle Park S. fourth Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}).

He continued, “Silver Knott is a horse I would potentially take to America. Stepping up to a mile I think will suit him, he travels very well.

“Mysterious Night who won in Canada is a horse we'll contemplate going there with as well, but he's achieved his Group 1 status already and, while he hasn't been busy, he's had a few runs and is a horse we've very much got on our radar for next year.

“I will potentially take Mischief Magic to the [Juvenile Turf] Sprint. He ran well in the Middle Park, he ran a solid race drawn out on a wing and he was very impressive at Kempton before that.

“You need to turn up at these international events with A–the right horse and B–have all the luck in the world. You've got to get a good draw, travel over well and get settled in OK. If he does all that he won't look out of place in the race.”

The Godolphin raiders will not be limited to just juveniles, as the progressive Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who has won all four of his starts in 2022, including a brace of German Group 1s on Aug. 14 and Sept. 25, is likely for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf. GI Saratoga Derby Invitational S. scorer Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who blew away a field by 6 1/4 lengths in the GIII Jockey Club Derby Invitational S. at the Belmont At The Big A on Sept. 17 is another for the 1 1/2-mile turf showpiece. An outsider for the trip is Classic winner Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {Ire}), who is first running on QIPCO British Champions Day on Oct. 15.

“For the Breeders' Cup Turf we've got a nice little collective,” said Appleby. “We've already seen what Nations Pride has done in America this season. He's come back and is a horse we will very much look forward to having on the list.

“There is also Rebel's Romance, who is now four-from-four and has got the job done in his last two starts at Group 1 level in Germany. Potentially Adayar as well depending on how he gets on at Champions Day.

“If you can walk away from the Breeders' Cup with one winner it sort of wraps the season up nicely.”

Baaeed Casts A Long Shadow In The Sussex

Twelve months on from the confirmation of his potency in the G3 Thoroughbred S. at the Qatar Goodwood Festival, Shadwell's Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) returns to the famous Downs as a relative giant as he pursues ever higher ground in Wednesday's G1 Qatar Sussex S. at Goodwood. While his tally of four straight Group 1 wins–in the Prix du Moulin, the QEII, the Lockinge and Queen Anne–is highly commendable, it is still shy of the five achieved by the likes of Dubai Millennium (GB), Enable (GB), Giant's Causeway and St Mark's Basilica (Fr). By the end of the year, it is not inconceivable that he could be matching the seven of this race's 2002 hero Rock of Gibraltar (Ire), even if the nine of Frankel (GB) looks out of reach.

Comparisons with Frankel were being bandied about prior to the June 14 Queen Anne, but his performance there failed to satisfy that on a visual basis. Time-wise, it was the meeting's key moment, however, with startling final sectionals placing him in a league of his own. Running the final two furlongs faster than the King's Stand winner Nature Strip (Aus) (Nicconi {Aus}), he was quicker even than Battaash (Ire) had been over the same last quarter mile in the King's Stand in 2020. This is a fast animal and William Haggas's quip that he could win a July Cup was actually close to the mark.

Angus Gold is not being complacent, however. “As far as I know everything is good, he worked very nicely last week and I think they've been happy since, so you can but hope. There's some very good horses in the race and as we saw in the King George on Saturday, you can never take anything for granted,” he said. “It's possibly not his ideal track, but you could say that about a lot of them so I don't see that as a reason for him not to win if he's in good form and gets a good run through the race.”

Connections already have their sights trained on the G1 Juddmonte International at York Aug. 17. “He's done all his winning at a mile and he's shown he's got the speed and the class to win Group 1s at a mile,” Gold added. “For me, it's going to be more interesting to see whether he can be versatile and carry that speed over a mile and a quarter. I know William felt it was too big a gap between Ascot and York and as he rightly said, they're here to race these horses so that's why he's going to Goodwood.”

 

A Free Hit

Tuesday's G2 Lennox S. win of Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) proved that the Andrew Balding stable is in hot form and Baaeed's biggest concern could come from Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never), who has nothing to lose tackling the favourite bidding for back-to-back renewals at a track that plays to her strengths. Very few horses can win this and a July Cup, but that is what she did at Newmarket July 9 where she put upwards of 1 1/2 lengths between her and the Platinum Jubilee crew led by Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). “It took her a couple of runs to find her feet this year, but she's in great form and she looks very well,” Balding said. “She won the race last year and while this looks a very strong renewal, it wasn't a bad one when she beat Poetic Flare. At Goodwood it's not always enough to be the best horse, as you need luck too. We wouldn't want to win that way, but it's a horse race at the end of the day.”

 

Game Changer

While the loss of Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) from this picture is a blow to Godolphin, it is worth remembering that Charlie Appleby houses the three winners of the English, Irish and French 2000 Guineas and he still has one of them engaged in Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). While the form of his success in the May 15 G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains at ParisLongchamp has yet to be seriously boosted, it is early days and this return to a mile on a fast course should see him in a positive light. “He can do it every which way and can adapt, plus the draw in one is a positive,” jockey William Buick said on Tuesday. “Everyone has to respect Baaeed and rightly so, as he's a fantastic horse and is obviously going to be very hard to beat.”

Appleby added, “The step back up in trip is going to suit him and the quick ground will also be in his favour. He loves it rattling fast. He's a very classy colt, he's a multiple Group 1 winner and a sharp track such as Goodwood will pose no problem when you recall how he handled Del Mar. He will give a good account of himself.”

 

Rocket Powered?

Goodwood's action on Wednesday also includes a pair of Group 3 contests, with the 2-year-olds lining up for the five-furlong Markel Molecomb S. and the fillies and mares set for the seven-furlong Whispering Angel Oak Tree S. Victorious Racing's June 15 Listed Windsor Castle S. runner-up and July 1 Listed Dragon S. winner Rocket Rodney (GB) (Dandy Man {Ire}) is back over the course and distance over which he opened his account in style Apr. 29 and ticks all the boxes, but the lurker could be Rockcliffe Stud's impressive July 15 Newbury maiden scorer Trillium (GB) (No Nay Never). “She's a very good filly who stepped up from her first run to her second when bolting up at Newbury in fine style,” Trillium's trainer Richard Hannon said on his Unibet blog. “That was over six furlongs, but she's got a fantastic turn of foot so I'm not worried about going down to five furlongs and she receives a bit of weight as well for being a filly.” Al Shaqab Racing have a habit of plundering the Oak Tree, with three wins between 2015 and 2017 with French raiders and are here again with the Francis-Henri Graffard-trained June 12 Listed Prix Volterra winner Samahram (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}).

 

Nashwa Faces Eight In Nassau

Thursday's G1 Qatar Nassau S. has attracted nine, with Hollie Doyle keen to renew her partnership with Imad Al Sagar's G1 Prix de Diane heroine Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}). This is one of the weaker renewals on paper in recent times, with the May 29 G1 Prix d'Ispahan winner Dreamloper (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and the May 12 G2  Middleton Fillies' S. scorer Lilac Road (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) key among the older brigade. “Nashwa is just unreal and she's getting better and better,” her rider told QIPCO British Champions Series. “Every time I sit on her between races she's improved again. I rode a piece of work on her last week which was very similar to the work we did before France and she's bigger and stronger once again, and better than ever.”

Caravaggio’s Tenebrism Storms To Jean Prat Glory

Delivering the potent acceleration that had seen her claim joint-champion status among the juvenile fillies in the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket in September, TDN Rising Star Tenebrism (Caravaggio) was firmly in command under optimum conditions in Deauville's seven-furlong G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat on Sunday. Able to draft in mid-pack early, Ballydoyle's 13-2 shot who sports the Westerberg silks was unleashed between Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and Rozgar (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and after gaining the lead 100 metres from the line stayed on strongly to record a 1 1/4-length verdict over Light Infantry (GB) (Fast Company {Ire}). There was a blanket for the minors, with Light Infantry a short neck in front of Lusail, who was in turn a nose ahead of Accakaba (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), with a nose also separating that rival and Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and a short head between that Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero and Rozgar. “The pace was a little slow and we had to wait–it was tight for room and they were all on top of each other, but she's got that great turn of foot and is a fast filly,” Ryan Moore said of the winner, who had been eighth in the 1000 Guineas and fourth in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot last time June 17.

Tenebrism, whose immediate entry is in Goodwood's star-studded G1 Qatar Sussex S. July 27, was providing another landmark for Aidan O'Brien, who had yet to win the Jean Prat. “She's always shown plenty–she won the Cheveley Park on her second start and the ground was very fast for the Guineas and she got banged around and never got into any rhythm,” Moore, who had returned from action at Belmont hours earlier, added. “She was still a bit green at Ascot and struggled around the bend, but finished well and ran a good race but it was nice to come to a level track on nice ground today. She accelerated through the gap like a motorbike–Caravaggio was fast and she's out of Immortal Verse, who is well known here. She was very comfortable over seven today.”

Light Infantry, who had like Lusail been an eye-catcher when ninth in the 2000 Guineas having missed the break, is set for a return visit to Deauville for next month's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois. “We thought the seven furlongs on fast ground would be against him and I'd like to think he has a bright future and will definitely be better at a mile,” trainer David Simcock said. “He ran better than his finishing position suggested at Newmarket and hopefully he'll come back here in August for the Jacques Le Marois. He is a very straightforward, very talented horse who handles any ground.”

Lusail was putting up another solid effort at the top level and trainer Richard Hannon said, “The mixed tempo of the race maybe cost us the win and other than that, there is nothing more to say. He is very consistent and will almost certainly win us another big one soon. He will most likely head to Goodwood for the [G2] Lennox Stakes or the Sussex.” Christophe Ferland said of Accakaba, “I am torn somewhere between satisfied and disappointed not to have won. I love this filly. She has an exceptional turn of foot and this was a proper race, with the best horses at seven furlongs and a mile–she'll now head to the [G1] Prix Maurice De Gheest.”

Charlie Appleby was pleased with the effort of Modern Games, who was found out by the drop from a mile. “We've got caught for a turn of foot, dropping back to seven and in the end, we know the mile is his best trip,” he said. “Trying to find a mile race for him at this time of the year is difficult, but there is the Sussex or the Jacques Le Marois and if he goes to the former he'll run alongside Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and if he goes for the Marois it will be with Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {Ire}). As
always, he ran a very solid race.”

The aforementioned Immortal Verse, who captured the G1 Coronation S. and this venue's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, is out of the Listed Prix La Camargo winner and G3 Prix Fille de l'Air runner-up Side of Paradise (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and is a full-sister to Go Lovely Rose (Ire) who is responsible for four black-type performers including the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. runner-up Roseman (Ire) (Kingman {GB}).

Side of Paradise is a daughter of Mill Princess (Ire) (Mill Reef), renowned for producing the Breeders' Cup Mile hero and champion sire Last Tycoon (Ire), as well as the G3 Goldene Peitsche-winning fellow sire Astronef (Ire) and the G3 Prix du Bois scorer and stakes producer The Perfect Life (Ire) (Try My Best). Another of Mill Princess's daughters, Save Me The Waltz (Ire) (Kings Lake), is in turn the dam of the GI Matron S. heroine Sense of Style (Thunder Gulch) and the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Valentine Waltz (Ire) (Be My Guest), while the moderate performer Zelda (Ire) (Caerleon) proved one of the family's best in her second career.
