Thistledown’s Thursday Card Features Pair Of Ohio-Bred Stakes

A pair of $75,000 Ohio Thoroughbred Race Fund (OTRF) stakes will highlight the JACK Thistledown racing card on Thursday, June 17. Set as the co-featured sixth and seventh races are the George Lewis Memorial Stakes and the J. William Petro Memorial Handicap. First race post time is 12:50 pm, ET.

A field of eight Ohio Accredited 3-year-olds and up vie in the 41st running of the one and one-sixteenth mile Lewis Memorial, with a scheduled post time of 3:20 pm, ET. Perennial favorite and multiple stakes winner Mobil Solution, a 6-year-old son of Mobil-Perfect Solution, by Seeking the Gold is the obvious standout with $634,030 in career earnings. Trained by Jeff Skerrett for owner Danielle Agnello, Mobil Solution won this same stake last year and finished second in 2019 and 2018.

Other top prospects in this field include the multiple stakes-placed Authentic Cowtown, a 4-year-old son of Cowtown Cat and winner of $161,065 lifetime; the stakes-winning Pat's Karma, a 5-year-old son of Cowtown Cat who has $208,944 in career earnings; and Sammy Da Bull, who captured the 2019 edition of the Lewis. This 5-year-old son of Vertiformer has $171,007 in his coffers.

The 18th running of the Petro Memorial features ten Ohio registered fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, traveling one and one-sixteenth miles over the Cleveland dirt, with a scheduled post time of 3:50 pm, ET. This event is far more wide open than the Lewis, with any number of qualified contestants able to claim first prize.

Drillit, who captured this same stake in 2020, appears to be the obvious choice. The 5-year-old chestnut daughter by Drill-Way to Fly, by Bowman's Band has multiple stakes to her credit and $432,770 in career earnings for Mast Thoroughbreds and trainer Robert Gorham.

Another in here with a solid shot is the hard-knocking Grizabella, a bay, 7-year-old multiple stakes-placed daughter of Lunarpal with just over $450,000 in earnings for owner Michael Annechino and trainer Jeff Radosevich. As well, Moonlight Mission is another force to be reconned with. This 4-year-old Shackleford mare has career earnings of $292,950 and comes into this race fresh off a Thistledown Allowance race triumph on May 27 for owner Charlie Williams and trainer Silvano Gonzalez.

Esplanande Named Ohio’s 2020 Horse Of The Year

Esplanande, who bested all challengers in her home state, and made an impact on the national stage was named 2020 Ohio Horse of the Year by the Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners.

The Daredevil filly won three of four starts last year, winning on debut by 6 1/4 lengths at Belterra Park, then taking the Hoover Stakes at the same track with a front-running trip. The filly then tested deeper waters, shipping to Saratoga for the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes in her final start of the season. She led through the early fractions, but ultimately finished second to future Eclipse Award winner Vequist.

Esplanande is owned by the partnership of Winstar Farm LLC, Blazing Meadows Farm LLC, and Michael Lewis. She was also bred by WinStar and Blazing Meadows, and she is trained by Tim Hamm.

Offered on behalf of the Estate of Gerald Silver, the 5-year-old won the 2017 Joshua Radosevich Memorial S. and the Governor’s Buckeye Cup in 2019 and just two days prior to the OTBO sale, made a one-mile Thistledown allowance his 10th victory from 31 career starts. A total of 74 horses changed hands for gross receipts of $528,500.

“The Sales Committee of the OTBO, along with the support of the Ohio HBPA and all its horsemen and women, worked extremely hard to provide an attractive marketplace for both buyers and sellers,” said OTBO Executive Director Michael Annechino. “The horses that went through the ring looked spectacular and offered tremendous value in all categories.”

Stakes Winner Mobil Solution Tops Ohio Mixed Sale

The Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Mixed Sale took place on Oct. 15 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Delaware Ohio, spearheaded by the $88,000 purchase of Ohio-bred year-end award winner Mobil Solution.

Over 150 people turned out on a Thursday afternoon amidst a festive setting at the historic Delaware County Fairgrounds. Seventy-four lots went through the auction ring, with 62 changing hands for revenues of $432,300 and an average sale price of $6,972. Most of the winning bidders were on-site but several horses were purchased through the online and phone-in bidding options.

The sale topper was Hip 12, the Ohio-bred Mobil Solution. Sold by the Estate of Gerald Silver, the multiple stakes-winning 5-year-old gelding was acquired by Carmine Agnello for $88,000. The son of top Ohio sire Mobil will now be trained by Jeff Skerrett.

Mobil Solution was Ohio's champion 3-year-old male of 2018, and last year's champion Ohio-accredited male. He's an eight-time stakes winner with earnings of more than $500,000. Just two days before the sale, Mobil Solution won a Thistledown allowance race by three-quarters of a length for trainer Michael Rone.

The sale's top yearling was Wildcat Bill, a first-crop Wildcat Red colt who sold to William Spitler for $26,000.

The Ohio-bred colt is out of the winning Quiet American mare Polite Company. His extended family includes Peruvian champion Al Kadir, Puerto Rican champion Awesome Warrior, Jamaican champion Sorrentino's Star, and Grade 3-placed stakes winner Val d'Enchere. He was consigned by Stallion Ventures.

“What a fantastic day for Ohio racing,” said OTBO executive director Mike Annechino. “The sales committee of the OTBO, along with the support of the Ohio HBPA and all its horsemen and women, worked extremely hard to provide an attractive marketplace for both buyers and sellers. The horses that went through the ring looked spectacular and offered tremendous value in all categories. The excellent sales results prove once again that racing in Ohio is the best bet in the business.”

The Ohio racing program offers year-round racing with 43 stakes races for Ohio-breds totaling over $3.6 million in annual purses.
