Preakness Futures Bet To Debut Apr. 28

A futures-styled pari-mutuel wager to pick the winner of the GI Preakness S. before the GI Kentucky Derby goes off will debut this year with an 18% takeout.

The pool will be hosted by the Maryland Jockey Club (MJC). The new bet was unanimously approved at Tuesday's monthly meeting of the Maryland Racing Commission.

Mike Rogers, the president of the racing division for the MJC, described details of the Preakness wager.

“The window of that bet will open on Friday, Apr. 28, and we're going to close roughly 6 p.m. before the [May 6] Derby. So it's going to be cool to see our Preakness future odds right alongside the Derby odds.”

Rogers explained that the bet will be based on the way the existing Kentucky Derby Future Wager is conducted by Churchill Downs.

“We're going to use theirs as a foundation. But we're also going to add a couple of [Bob] Baffert horses [that have been barred from Derby competition this year]. We want to hopefully have a couple of local Maryland horses in there. We want to add a couple of fillies. So we're going to try to get maybe at least 30 betting interests. Maybe up to 39 [with an “all others' field option]. We can do 40 [total betting interests].”

Figuring out which Derby starters might contest the second leg of the Triple Crown will lend a difficult element to the bet.

In 2022, the 20-horse Derby yielded only three Preakness starters in a field of nine. In 2021, the 19-horse Derby sent just three starters to the 10-horse Preakness field.

Canter for a Cause Raises Over $20K for TAA

For the third year, 300 riders from the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond walked, trotted, and cantered their horses across Pimlico Oct. 31 with proceeds to benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA). In total, the 2022 Canter for the Cause raised over $20,000 for the TAA–a nonprofit which provides accreditation and grants to Thoroughbred aftercare organizations dedicated to the retraining, retiring, and rehoming of off-track Thoroughbreds.

Sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club, this annual event also gives riders the opportunity to take their horses through the starting gate and get their picture taken in the winner's circle.

Maryland Jockey Club Vice President of Racing Development, Georganne Hale said, “Everybody who rode around the historic track had a smile on their face, riders loved getting their picture taken in the winner's circle, and all the proceeds went to an important cause for our industry–the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.”

Laurel’s Training Schedule Adjusted for Track Maintenance

The Maryland Jockey Club outlined a change in the training schedule at Laurel to accommodate a maintenance project on the main track. Expected to take a week, depending on weather. the project is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Aug. 23. According to MJC Track Superintendent Chris Bosley, the work involves a section of the homestretch that was repaired in the fall of 2021. An inspection that was part of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's Racetrack Safety Program, which began July 1, determined that the area requires further review. Racing at Laurel concludes Aug. 21, with live racing taking place at the Maryland State Fair at Timonium for two weeks before moving to Pimlico for three weeks. During the project, the MJC will reimburse shipping costs for horses that travel to Pimlico for workouts only.

SCHEDULE

TUESDAY, AUG. 23: Training from 5-9 a.m. with one break from 7-7:30 a.m.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 24 – THURSDAY, AUG. 25: No training -maintenance project begins.

FRIDAY, AUG. 26 – SUNDAY, AUG. 28: Dogs will be set up around the track for horses to gallop the right way only with no backing up, no joggers and no free ponying. Normal training hours of 5:30-10:30 a.m. will be in place. Gate schooling, standing only, no breaking.

MONDAY, AUG. 29: Dogs will still be up with galloping the right way only with no backing up, no joggers and no free ponying. Training hours will be 5-9 a.m. with one break from 7-7:30 a.m.

TUESDAY, AUG. 30: The entire track will be available for horses with regular training hours of 5:30-10:30 a.m., but workouts won't be permitted.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 31: The track will be open for regular training hours of 5:30-10:30 a.m. with workouts permitted.

MTHA Approves Purse Bonus, Addition of Racing Days

The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association Board of Directors approved a 20% Purse Bonus on all overnight races through Feb. 27 at Laurel Park Wednesday. In addition, the Maryland Jockey Club, during a meeting with the MTHA, agreed to add three Thursdays in February to the live racing calendar and said it will card at least 10 races a day in January and February when possible. First post time has been moved to 12:10 p.m. in January to accommodate extra races.

Live racing at Laurel Park is scheduled to resume Sunday, Jan. 16, after the cancellation of six racing programs due to a project that involves recomposition of the cushion material on the dirt track. Racing also is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 17. Six stakes planned for Saturday, Jan. 22, will move to Saturday, Jan. 29. The complete racing schedule under the updated calendar is as follows: Jan. 16-17; Jan. 20-23; Jan. 27-30; Feb. 3-6; Feb. 10-13; Feb. 18-21; and Feb. 24-27 for a total of 26 days.
