Bella Sofia Starts Anew in Vagrancy

Bella Sofia (Awesome Patriot), last year's dominant GI Longines Test S. victress, will make her 4-year-old debut as the 123-pound highweight and probable odds-on favorite in Saturday's five-horse GIII Vagrancy H. at Belmont.

Opening her account with an eye-popping 11 1/4-length rout going six furlongs over this track last May, the $20,000 OBS June bargain buy was second in the Jersey Girl S. a month later before cruising to a 6 1/2-length allowance victory here July 11. Pressing the pace in the Test Aug. 7 at Saratoga, the dark bay ran away to a dazzling 4 1/4-length score and followed that up with another easy, open-length triumph in the track-and-trip GII Gallant Bloom H. She couldn't quite carry that momentum into the Breeders' Cup, retreating to fourth in the GI Filly & Mare Sprint, but returns with a trio of bullet works over this track for trainer Rudy Rodriguez and drew advantageously in the outermost stall.

“We're just trying to get her back and see if she is the same filly as last year,” Rodriguez told the NYRA notes team. “We thought the key was to get her started back here at Belmont. She's been training very good. She looks bigger and stronger, so we just hope she's at least the same as–and hopefully a little better than–last year.”

Miss Brazil (Palace Malice) looks to spring the upset in her second start as a 4-year-old. A facile winner of the Ruthless S. last February at Aqueduct, the $170,000 Keeneland September purchase added stakes placings in the Busher Invitational S. and Jersey Girl before closing her sophomore campaign with a disappointing fifth in the GIII Victory Ride S. The Tony Dutrow pupil returned off a nine-plus month layoff with an allowance/optional claiming success Apr. 22 at Aqueduct.

Rounding out the field are six-time stakes winner Frank's Rockette (Into Mischief), last-out GIII Distaff H. runner-up Kept Waiting (Broken Vow) and longshot Assertive Style (Nyquist), who was claimed by Flying P Stable and Tom Morley for $80,000 out of a runner-up finish sprinting on the Fair Grounds turf Mar. 25.

Australasia Seeks Seventh Straight Victory

Australasia (Sky Kingdom) looks to take her record to seven-for-seven and score her first graded win Saturday in Belmont's GIII Victory Ride S. The dark bay dominated her fellow Louisiana-breds with four straight wins–three of which were stakes–by a combined 24 1/4 lengths. Scoring her first win against open company on the GI Kentucky Oaks undercard May 1, she rallied to victory in the local Jersey Girl S. June 6.

Bella Sofia (Awesome Patriot) completed the exacta in the Jersey Girl after running away to an 11 1/4-length graduation on debut at this oval May 6. Third-place finisher and Ruthless S. romper Miss Brazil (Palace Malice) also returns in this spot.

Red Ghost (Ghostzapper) is the only member of this field who already has a graded stakes win on her resume. Kicking off 2021 with an allowance score at Keeneland Apr. 16, the chestnut captured the GIII Miss Preakness S. last out May 14.

Inject (Frosted) also won a Keeneland allowance Apr. 15 and cruised home too a 5 1/4-length score in the Goldfinch S. against much lesser company last time at Prairie Meadows May 15.

Another of interest at a price is 'TDN Rising Star' Souper Sensational (Curlin). Winner of Woodbine's Glorious Song S. at two, the chestnut was third in the GII Fair Grounds Oaks Mar. 20 and was fourth last out in the GII Eight Belles S. Apr. 30.

Search Results Edges Miss Brazil In Busher, Earns 50 Kentucky Oaks Points

The $250,000 Busher Invitational kicked off the stakes action on Gotham Day at Aqueduct Racetrack in thrilling fashion as the two favorites, Search Results and Miss Brazil, sparred for the duration of the one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies, with the Klaravich Stables-owned Search Results proving best by a half-length at the finish.

Sent off as the narrow second choice in the wagering at 2-1, Search Results was making just her second career start on the heels of an emphatic, four-length debut win on January 3 at Gulfstream Park for trainer Chad Brown.

Despite a far less imposing resume than Miss Brazil, who won the local prep for the Busher, the Ruthless, by 6 ¼ lengths as an encore to a dominant maiden score at Aqueduct, the betting public had the race pegged with near-laser precision as Miss Brazil was sent off the slightest of favorites at 9-5 — a margin that was almost transposed onto the racetrack given the way the race unfolded.

The field of six all broke well and formed a very tight pack down the backstretch of the Ozone Park, N.Y., track as Miss Brazil went out to show the way through splits of 24.53 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 49.64 for the half with Search Results in close attendance on her outside. The two continued to amble along on the front around the far turn, logging three-quarters in 1:15.14, and began to gain separation from the others as the field turned for home.

As jockey Eric Cancel finally let her loose, Miss Brazil tried to inch away from her rival down the lane, but Search Results proved an intractable foe and refused to concede any ground to the favorite. With a sixteenth to go it was still anyone's race, and it was only in the waning strides that Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano and Search Results were able to finally pass Miss Brazil, stopping the clock in 1:39.75 for the distance.

“She broke so well out of the gate. She put me in a good position to rate and I didn't want to take that away from her and take her back,” said winning rider Castellano. “I just let her do what she wanted to do. She was happy and she settled fine. They were just galloping along in the lead with the one horse [Miss Brazil], who was my target on paper.

“When I asked her, she didn't switch leads, but everything I asked for, she gave it to me. She responded,” he added. “I like the way she galloped out and I think she's going to be a good filly in the future. Two turns will be even better.”

The win made it two in a row for Search Results, a dark bay daughter of Flatter that was purchased for $310,000 as a yearling at the 2019 Keeneland September Sale, and in the process netted her 50 qualifying points toward a berth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on April 30 at Churchill Downs. Search Results returned $6.30 on a $2 win wager and received the winner's share of the purse of $137,500, bumping her bankroll to $161,500.

A game Miss Brazil finished second, 5 ¾ lengths in front of Search Results' stablemate The Grass Is Blue, who got caught up in a bit of traffic around the turn and was still able to muster a rally in the stretch behind the tepid early splits, while it was another half-length back to Laobanonaprayer in fourth. These three earned 20, 10, and 5 Oaks qualifying points, respectively, for their finishes. Make Mischief and Mo Desserts completed the order of finish.

Updated Kentucky Oaks leaderboard

“The plan going into this race was to go to the lead and make her comfortable, and I followed through with it,” said Cancel of runner-up Miss Brazil. “I just got caught the last sixteenth. The [final furlong] made a little bit of a difference with it being her first time going a mile. She fought hard almost to the wire. The last sixteenth she struggled just a bit, but they ran hard. I can't take anything away from her. She's a really decent filly.”

Live racing resumes Sunday at Aqueduct with an eight-race card highlighted by the $100,000 Biogio's Rose, a one-turn mile for state-bred fillies and mares 4-years-old and up in Race 7. First post is 1:20 p.m. Eastern.

Search Results Outslugs Miss Brazil In Busher

Search Results (Flatter) gave her sire a second 3-year-old stakes winner Saturday, outgaming pacesetting Miss Brazil (Palace Malice) in the final furlong to take Saturday's $250,000 Busher S. at Aqueduct and earning 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks in the process.

Sent off an easy-in-the market 2-1 second favorite after touching 3-2 early on, Search Results was put into the race by Javier Castellano and took up pace-pressing duties from second as Miss Brazil led them along through controlled splits of :24.53 and :49.64. The duo raced side-by side past the quarter-pole, as they began to get away from their four rivals and clearly had the race between them as they entered the final eighth of a mile. Shoulder to shoulder into the last half-furlong, Miss Brazil dug in determinedly, but Search Results–racing on her incorrect lead–was in for the fight and was up in the final couple of strides to take it by a half to three-quarters of a length. The winner's stablemate The Grass Is Blue (Broken Vow) was third.

“She put me in a good position to rate and I didn't want to take that away from her and take her back,” said Castellano. “When I asked her, she didn't switch leads, but everything I asked for, she gave it to me. She responded. I like the way she galloped out and I think she's going to be a good filly in the future. Two turns will be even better.”

Search Results, whose sire was also represented by Listed Al Bastakiya S. winner Panadol at Meydan in Dubai Saturday morning, was stepping straight into stakes company off a four-length debut success sprinting six furlongs at Gulfstream Jan. 3.

From the family of the GI/G1SW Mind Your Biscuits (Posse), Search Results has a 2-year-old full-sister and her dam was bred to Nyquist after missing to Flatter's champion son West Coast for 2020. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
