Mishriff to Stand in France for Sumbe in 2023

Treble Group 1 winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}–Contradict {GB}, by Raven's Pass) will retire to France to stand at Sumbe's Haras de Montfort et Preaux at the conclusion of his racing career later this season. The 5-year-old is set to run in Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, with a tilt at the Breeders' Cup also on the cards.

Prince AA Faisal's homebred landed Classic honours when winning the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and returned as a 4-year-old to win the word's richest race, the $20-million Saudi Cup, before claiming further Group 1 success in Dubai and Britain in the Sheema Classic and Juddmonte International. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, he has won seven of his 19 races and more than £11 million in prize-money, a tally he could yet enhance in Paris this weekend. It was announced on Tuesday that Mishriff will be partnered in the Arc by Britain's champion jockey-elect William Buick.

Haras de Montfort et Preaux, which was until recently home to leading French sire Le Havre (Ire), who died in March, is one of several prestigious stud farms owned under Nurlan Bizakov's Sumbe banner, which incudes Haras du Mezeray and Hesmonds Stud in England.

A statement released by Sumbe on Tuesday afternoon read, “We are delighted to announce that we have reached an agreement with Prince Faisal that Mishriff will stand as a stallion at Sumbe in 2023. Prince Faisal is a very successful owner/breeder and has raced many champions who have gone on to become excellent sires.

“We believe this is great news for French breeders after the recent loss of two incredible stallions, Le Havre and Wootton Bassett (GB) [to Ireland]. Since the untimely death of Le Havre earlier this year we have been actively looking for a nice stallion prospect.

Nevertheless, Mishriff was our main target–he won the Prix du Jockey Club, the ultimate stallion-making race, in a highly impressive time. Mishriff has been unbeaten in France and his achievements in 2021 were nothing short of extraordinary–that year's world champion turf horse, he won the world's most expensive race in Saudi Arabia on dirt, the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan in record time, as well as the Juddmonte International S. by six lengths. Although he has nothing more to prove as a champion, we hope he finalises his career in a style that befits his level.”

It concluded, “Mishriff is a son of Make Believe, the winner of Poule d'Essai des Poulains, from the family of Invincible Spirit (Ire), Kodiac (GB), Pinatubo (Ire) and many others. His great granddam, Rafha (GB), won the Prix de Diane, making him French in several generations. An outstanding-looking horse, he has won over £11,700,000 in prize-money and we cannot wait to introduce Mishriff to breeders.”

James Doyle Confirmed to Ride Mishriff in King George

James Doyle, who has been enjoying a season to remember, has landed another plum ride after it was announced that he will replace David Egan aboard Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) in Saturday's G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco S. at Ascot.

Egan recorded the biggest payday of his career when partnering the John and Thady Gosden-trained Mishriff to Saudi Cup glory in 2021, however, the ride aboard the three-time Group 1 winner became available after last week Prince Faisal revealed that he would be using the best available jockey.

That announcement came shortly after Mishriff finished second in the G1 Coral-Eclipse, an effort Doyle said points to the fact the 5-year-old retains all of his old zest for the game.

He told Nick Luck's Daily Podcast, “I couldn't be more thankful to the connections for putting their trust in me and choosing me to ride him.

“He's an incredible horse and what he has achieved is just outstanding. I thought his run in the Eclipse showed he is still right at the top of his game.”

Doyle, who has already won the Qipco 2,000 Guineas aboard Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the 1,000 Guineas on Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) this season, added, “I'm going into Mr Gosden's tomorrow morning to pop on him as obviously I've not ridden him before, but I've seen a fair bit of him and it will be nice to jump on board before Saturday.

“He travels into his races really well and I thought he was a shade unlucky in the Eclipse. It was an incredible run really to get stopped the way he did and when he got out he really hit the line hard.”

Mishriff is a general 4-1 chance for Saturday's Group 1. He finished second behind Derby hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the mile-and-a-half contest 12 months ago.

Opposition in this year's race is headed by another Derby winner, the Ralph Beckett-trained Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), last seen storming to glory in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh in June.

Torquator Tasso and Westover to Clash in King George

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) is among the six five-day confirmations for the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. at Ascot on Saturday, along with Irish Derby hero Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Oaks runner-up Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

The 5-year-old German raider was given the green light after a gallop on Monday morning at Mulheim, where he is trained by Marcel Weiss for owner Gestut Auenquelle. He bids to emulate compatriots Danedream (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}) and Novellist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), who won Britain's premier weight-for-age race in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

Torquator Tasso, the easy winner of the G2 Hansa-Preis at Hamburg on his most recent outing on July 2, worked over 11 furlongs with his regular jockey Rene Piechulek, with Weiss declaring that he was “very happy” with the horse's final serious prep for Saturday.

“It was a very important piece of work and it gives me a lot of confidence because I saw the horse like he was last year and he's getting better and better through the season,” said the trainer.

“After the Arc we worked out a plan for this year and it was a wish of the owner to go to Ascot before going back to the Arc. Danedream also won the Arc and then the King George for Germany, which tells you that you can try to do it and you can win.”

With record temperatures in England in the early part of this week and only the odd shower of rain possible at Ascot prior to Saturday the ground is unlikely to be too different from its current status of good to firm, good in places.

Weiss added, “The ground will not be a problem; Ascot is a very nice track and it is kept in good condition, especially for the quality horses this weekend.

“At Hamburg he won on fast ground. He's just maybe a bit better when the ground is softer, but he can go on every ground.”

Completing a classy field for the weekend's feature race are the Group 1 winners Broome (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) and Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}).

Prince Faisal Parts Company With David Egan

David Egan is no longer being retained by owner Prince Faisal, who will revert to using the “best available jockey”.
The association has come to an immediate end with James Doyle booked to ride the Roger Varian-trained Sajwaan (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) at Newbury on Saturday.
Egan, 23, enjoyed a stellar association with Prince Faisal's Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), and partnered him to his maiden victory at Nottingham in November 2019, not long after he was appointed to the role.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, he missed out on Mishriff's 2020 French Derby win with Ioritz Mendizabal stepping in, and was then banned when the John and Thady Gosden-trained star won the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano the following month.
Frankie Dettori replaced him on that occasion and retained the ride in the Champion S., but Egan got back on board for the 2021 Saudi Cup, winning the richest race in the world.
The pair won both the Sheema Classic in Dubai and the Juddmonte International at York last year and finished a close second in the Coral-Eclipse at the start of this month.
In a statement, Prince Faisal's racing manager Ted Voute said, “David Egan has not signed his 2022 riding contract, so Prince Faisal has decided to revert to best available jockey, starting with Sajwaan, a first-time-out 2-year-old that runs on Saturday who will be ridden by James Doyle.”
