‘Rising Star’ Prince Of Monaco Game In Futurity Victory

If the last 24 hours have given us anything to judge by, the future of racing on the West Coast seems to be in safe hands.

Just one day after 'TDN Rising Star' Tamara (Bolt d'Oro) asserted herself atop her division in the GI FanDuel Racing Del Mar Debutante S., fellow 'Rising Star' Prince of Monaco (Speightstown) followed suit with a game performance to give trainer Bob Baffert his 17th win in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity.

The colt's victory Sunday came as absolutely no surprise. An eight-length debut winner at Los Alamitos, the $950,000 Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga Select grad parlayed that right into an equally impressive route when defeating another 'Rising Star' in Muth (Good Magic) to take the GIII Best Pal S. Aug. 13.

“He broke well and I thought I was going to go to the lead,” said winning jockey Flavien Prat. “But other horses went for it, so we waited. On the turn, he made his move and we made the lead. His teammate (Mirahmadi) was trying hard. But I think my horse was just waiting for something to come up to him. That didn't happen. Can he run on? We won't know until it happens, but he's done everything right so far.”

“It was the right kind of trip we were looking for,” added Jimmy Barnes, assistant to Bob Baffert. “We weren't sure about Mirahmadi, where he was going to be placed in the race, but he left there running. (Flavien) Prat just got comfortable on the inside and when he needed to get to the outside he did and he accelerated. He's pretty push button, pretty straight forward. I'm very proud of both of them.”

Pedigree Note:

Picked up out of the aforementioned Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Sale, Prince of Monaco is the first winner out of two to race from the dam. Out of unraced Rainier, the Mar. 26 foal is a grandson of MSW Clay's Rocket (American Chance), a half-sister to GI Frizette winner Adieu (El Corredor). His 7-year-old dam is also responsible for a Munnings filly from last year who sells at Keeneland September next week (hip 1026), followed by a Constitution filly this term. She was bred back to Speightstown for a full-sibling next year.

Del Mar Closes Out Meet On Sunday With Pair Of Graded Races

'TDN Rising Star' and $950,000 Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sale grad, GSW Prince of Monaco (Speightstown), headlines the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity on Sunday, as the Southern California meet closes its gates on another summer racing season.

Aiming for his 17th trophy in this race is Bob Baffert and the Hall of Famer not only has the aforementioned colt, winner last out of the GIII Best Pal S. at Del Mar and who is installed as the morning-line favorite at 2-5, but he also sends Mirahmadi (Into Mischief) to the post.

A $1.05-million Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase by the ownership consortium of SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Dianne Bashor, Robert E. Masterson, Waves Edge Capital, Catherine Donovan and Tom Ryan, who are also involved with Stonestreet Stables in Prince of Monaco, Mirahmadi will look to rebound from being summarily disqualified and placed fourth after wavering down the stretch against maidens in what was his third start Aug. 26 at Del Mar.

Wearing the same silks as the morning-line favorite, Tim Yakteen trainee Rothschild (Uncle Mo) fetched $700,000 at the same Keeneland sale as his undefeated stablemate. The bay colt flashed early speed when he broke his maiden in his second career race by 5 1/4 lengths at Del Mar Aug. 25.

Also on the graded slate is the GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf which features a number of hopefuls. Pin Oak Stud's Boltage (Bolt d'Oro) took to the grass at second asking when the 'TDN Rising Star' earned that honor by 5 1/4 lengths Aug. 24 at Del Mar. The Richard Mandella trainee will face off with Amerman homebred Endlessly (Oscar Performance), who was sharp on debut in Solano Beach July 30 for trainer Mike McCarthy. Flying under the radar is WSS Racing's Osage Creek (Speightster).

Longshot Tranche Upsets Fasig-Tipton Futurity

Chilly on the board at 20-1, Tranche missed the memo, and never looked back from the lead to upset the Fasig-Tipton Futurity in his third start.

Seventh on debut in April at Keeneland and then third beneath the Twin Spires May 4, he broke like a shot and quickly cleared his competition to claim his spot on the inside. Showing the way as :22.15 and :45.36 splits sailed by, he cut the corner coming into the homeward trail and continued to extend his lead under right-hand urging. It would be 7 1/4 lengths back to Mirahmadi who got up in time to grab second from Refocus.

“To be honest, I wasn't really (confident going into this race), in this business when you think you're going to win, it can sometimes go the other way,” said Luis Mendez, who won the 2021 Fasig Tipton Futurity with Big City Lights…”[Owner] Bill Peeples, I mean everybody on the team loved him, but I was not convinced. That beautiful field of horses was against him, so I was a little worried.”

The second of Theory of Change's offspring to get his picture taken, Tranche is her first black-type winner. He has a yearling half-brother by Street Sense and the mare came up barren from her 2023 cover to Maxfield. This is the female family of GSP America America (Mister Baileys {GB}), who is responsible for MGSP Bluegrass Princess (Dynaformer) and MSW Partisan Politics (More Than Ready) through her branch of the family. GISP My Gal Betty (Point of Entry) also makes an appearance as well as GSW So Long George (Arch). Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
