Mattson, Padilla And Quinonez Team Up For Minnesota Derby, Oaks Sweep

Owner Pete Mattson, trainer Tim Padilla and jockey Alonso Quinonez teamed up to sweep Wednesday night's richest races at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn. Thealligatorhunter, a prohibitive favorite, won the $100,000 Minnesota Derby and Molly's Angel, at 9-1 odds, won the $100,000 Minnesota Oaks, the premier races for 3-year-olds bred in the state.

Thealligatorhunter, who weaved left and right down the stretch but never made contact with Bayou Benny, prevailed by one length at the 1 mile and 70-yard distance. He paid $2.80.

In the Minnesota Oaks, Molly's Angel passed odds-on favorite Star of the North in the stretch, drawing off to win by 5 1/2 lengths, and paying $20.60, The Derby/Oaks sweep has never been accomplished by the same trainer, owner and jockey at Canterbury.

“We got em' all!” exclaimed Padilla following the Oaks.

Mattson of Prior Lake, who co-owns the Derby winner with Padilla, has 15 wins individually at the meet plus five additional in partnership. He sees a bright future for Thealligatorhunter “There's more to win. We think this horse can do a lot more so we're pretty excited about it,” he said.

Favorites Look Tough To Beat In Wednesday’s Minnesota Oaks, Derby At Canterbury Park

There will be prohibitive favorites in both the Minnesota Derby and Minnesota Oaks Wednesday at Canterbury Park. Thealligatorhunter in the Derby and Star of the North in the Oaks are both 3-5 on the morning line and represent the best of the 3-year-old statebred crop in a pair of $100,000 stakes conducted at one mile and 70 yards on the main track. The 11-race card, billed as Made in MN Night, begins at 5:00 p.m. and also includes the $50,000 Wally's Choice and $50,000 Glitter Star Stakes for older Minnesota breds.

Thealligatorhunter and Star of the North have finished first in their seven collective races this season at Canterbury, however Thealligatorhunter was disqualified for interference and placed second in his most recent start.

Each won their July 14 six furlong Oaks and Derby prep races. Star of the North went gate to wire in the $50,000 Frances Genter Stakes as the odds-on choice, winning by 3 1/4 lengths. Thealligatorhunter took control of the Victor S. Myers Stakes mid-race and cruised home by four lengths. Ry Eikleberry rode Star of the North for trainer Francisco Bravo. Alonso Quinonez rode Thealligatorhunter for Tim Padilla. Both will be aboard again Wednesday.

The colt and filly tried a longer distance for the first time in one mile allowance races. Star of the North again led her field gate to wire, winning easily as the unchallenged 1-9 favorite on July 29. Thealligatorhunter faced a bit tougher task Aug. 1. He was bumped at the start before dueling throughout with the older Minnesota Miracle. At the sixteenth pole Thealligatorhunter shifted out, making contact and held a 3/4-length edge at the finish line, but was subsequently disqualified.

The Minnesota Derby is the sixth race on the card with a 7:40 post time and is followed by the Oaks.

Drop of Golden Sun won the 2020 Wally's Choice racing gate to wire in the 1 1/16 mile stake, defeating Cinco Star, the morning-line favorite in this year's rendition, by four lengths. The two met July 14 when Cinco Star closed to win the Ralph Strangis Stakes. Quinonez will ride Drop of Golden Sun while Roimes Chirinos, who left Shakopee in late July to ride in New Mexico, returns for the mount on Cinco Star for trainer Mac Robertson.

Chirinos also is named on Ready to Runaway, the favorite in the Glitter Star who won this stake in 2019 and 2020 for owner John Mentz and trainer Robertson. The consistent 5-year-old mare has 11 wins and three second-place finishes from 14 starts at Canterbury. Mentz claimed her as a 3-year-old for $25,000 and since she has won nine races including seven stakes, and $390,185 in purses for the Lakeville owner. Ready to Runaway's earnings racing at Canterbury of $400,675 is the fourth largest sum in the history of the Shakopee racetrack.

The Grade 3, $100,000 Remington Park Oaks tops the undercard for Oklahoma Derby Sunday, Sept. 27. The 1-1/16 miles main track event will be drawn in the track racing office on Wednesday morning.

Clinton Stuart, a mainstay at Remington Park throughout the track's history, is expected to enter Hotasapistol in the oaks. The 3-year-old filly by Flat Out from the Dayjur mare Alacazar would make her first attempt away from Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn.

Northern Playboy Posts Minor Upset In Minnesota Derby

Upsets were sandwiched by favorites in the five stakes races run Wednesday evening at Canterbury Park. The first stake, the $50,000 MTA Sales Graduate Futurity, went to 2-5 favorite Westa Waverly and the final stake, the $50,000 Glitter Star, to 1-5 winner Ready to Runaway. In between were 10-1 Minnesota Oaks winner Hotasapistol, 6-1 Minnesota Derby winner Northern Playboy and Drop of Golden Sun, 6-1 winner of the $50,000 Wally's Choice. Both the Oaks and the Derby offered $100,000 purses. All five races were restricted to horses bred in Minnesota.

Hotasapistol, a 3-year-old filly owned and bred by Gary and Brenda Bergsrud, is trained by Clinton Stuart and was ridden by Alonso Quinonez. She covered the 1 mile and 70 yards of the Minnesota Oaks in 1:44.57, using a rail trip to win by 1 3/4 lengths. Hotasapistol paid $22.60 for a $2 win wager.

The Minnesota Derby winner Northern Playboy was bred and is owned by Dale Schenian and his trainer Francisco Bravo. Leading rider Ry Eikleberry was aboard the 3-year-old gelding that paid $14.20. Northern Playboy tracked favorite Weekend Ride and Public Safety in the early stages. Eikleberry waited for room to get by.

“I wasn't even sure if I could get through,” he said, but when Weekend Ride drifted out the eventual winner shot through and pulled away for a 4 3/4 lengths victory. “I was on much the best,” Eikleberry said. “We're really proud of him.”

Drop of Golden Sun went gate to wire in the Wally's Choice defeating all-time Minnesota bred money earner Hot Shot Kid by 3 1/4 lengths. He is owned and trained by Tony Rengstorf and was ridden by Francisco Arrieta. Drop of Golden Sun paid $15.00 to win.

The 2-year-old gelding, trained by Coty Rosin and owned by Jeff Ryan and Gary Starkson, returned $2.80. Final time for the 5 furlongs was 58.08 seconds.

Ready to Runaway continued her Canterbury main track dominance with an easy win in the Glitter Star Stakes. Jockey Roimes Chirinos sent the 4-year-old filly to the lead in the 1 1/16 mile race and was never challenged. She was under wraps at the wire, clear of second-place finisher Clickbait by 8 1/2 lengths. Ready to Runaway, $2.40, is trained by Mac Robertson for owner John Mentz.
