Even the Score Dead at 26

Even the Score (Unbridled's Song–Ashtabula, by Rahy), a resident of Old Friends for the past year, has died at the age of 26 after colicking. He was euthanized at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital on Saturday, Apr. 13.

A MSGW & GISP during his four-year racing career, Even the Score stood at Rosendo “Ro” Parra's Millennium Farms before he was pensioned in 2020. Among the 17 career black-type winners he sired from his 15 crops are multiple Grade I winners Dullahan and Take the Points.

“Even the Score was a special horse to our family,” said Parra. “My wife and I shed some tears when we learned he had to be put down. Even the Score was our first graded stakes winner. We are very thankful to Old Friends for taking care of him over the past year.”

John Nicholson, president and CEO of Old Friends, added: “Although Even the Score enjoyed a proud career both on the track and at stud, he was particularly special to us at Old Friends because he was a friendly and gentle stallion who was beloved by everyone at the farm. We will miss this good horse and will always honor his memory.”

Madden Now Sole Proprietor at Buckland Sales

Buckland Sales agency, which has been operating as a partnership between Ro Parra and Zach Madden, will now be run solely by the latter, as Parra will be stepping back from his role with the consignment company. The announcement comes the year after Parra consolidated his commercial breeding, boarding and stallion operations at Millennium Farms in Lexington to focus on his family and his own racing and breeding portfolio.

“Ro has been a tremendous business partner and mentor to me over the years and I am thankful to also call him a friend,” said Madden. “We all have a handful of people we come across in our lives who have a profound impact on our thinking and the lens through which we view the world. Ro is one of those people for me. His business acumen and guidance has been a huge asset.”

Parra and Madden, who had previously worked at Three Chimneys, launched Buckland Sales in 2015.

“I am a big believer in Zach's skills and capabilities,” said Parra. “Zach has spent the past six years building the foundation of Buckland Sales and it was my honor to support him in that. This transition is something we have planned for a long time, and I will continue to consign my own horses under the Buckland banner.”

Since presenting its inaugural consignment at Keeneland November in 2015, Buckland has been represented at all major North American yearling and breeding stock sales, its graduates including the likes of Biddy Duke, Chocolate Martini and GI Runhappy Travers S. runner-up Caracaro.

“We have been measured about how to grow Buckland, focusing on quality over quantity. With Morgan [Kei] assisting our customers and staff, Gustavo [Calleja] and our team at the sales and now Lauren [Morgan] coming on this year as our director of bloodstock, I couldn't ask for a better, more capable team,” said Madden. “With a strong draft to present this week at Keeneland, I am excited about the future for sure.”

Millennium Farms To Evolve Operations To Focus on Racing

Millennium Farms' owner Ro Parra, with over 26 years in various segments of the industry, is returning to a focus on racing that will include a small, select broodmare band. This will result in the halting of boarding services at Millennium Farms before the September Sale at Keeneland.

“While we have enjoyed the challenge of a full-service operation – including standing stallions a few years back – my real passion has been and will always be racing,” said Parra. “That's where I started in the game back in 1996. With a small group of quality mares and racing stock, hopefully we can return to having a top racing stable that can compete at the highest levels, as we have in the past. We hope to make this transition over the next 12 to 24 months.”

Millennium Farms' partnership in Buckland Sales with Zach Madden will continue as well.

“Zach has done a great job in a highly competitive marketplace to build a successful and respected sales agency,” continued Parra. “Our presence for our clients at Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton this fall with a robust consignment is a testament to Zach and the bright future for Buckland Sales.

“Jay Ted Neel, our general manager, will oversee the transition over the next six months and will be relocating to Oklahoma with his family at the end of the year,” Parra continued. “He will be retained as a consultant after he relocates.”

Millennium Farms will continue to operate, but not as a boarding facility. Bobby Miller, another industry veteran, will stay involved supervising the farm following the transition.

Millennium Farms to Cease Boarding, Will Transition to Racing Operation

Millennium Farms, located just outside of Lexington on Paris Pike, will transition from a boarding operation to a racing stable with a small broodmare band. Boarding services at the farm will cease before Keeneland's September sale.

In addition to boarding, the 320-acre farm operation has also previously stood stallions and offered foaling, sales prep, and layups. The farm's consignment partnership with Zach Madden in Buckland Sales will continue.

“While we have enjoyed the challenge of a full-service operation–including standing stallions a few years back–my real passion has been and will always be racing,” said owner Ro Parra, who bought the facility in 1999. “That's where I started in the game back in 1996. With a small group of quality mares and racing stock, hopefully we can return to having a top racing stable that can compete at the highest levels, as we have in the past. We hope to make this transition over the next 12 to 24 months.”

Jay Ted Neel, who has been with Millennium Farms since 2006 and currently serves as general manager, will oversee the transition before relocating to Oklahoma. He will be retained as a consultant. Current vice chairman Bobby Miller will also stay involved following the transition.
