Champion Vequist Kicks Off Sophomore Season in Davona Dale

Eleven rivals will be waiting to take on recently crowned champion Vequist (Nyquist) in Saturday's GII Davona Dale S. going a one-turn mile at Gulfstream Park.

The GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine, campaigned in partnership by Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable and breeder Swilcan Stable, earned her diploma at second asking with a daylight tally in Saratoga's GI Spinaway S. Sept. 6. Second behind Dayoutoftheoffice (Into Mischief) as the 4-5 favorite in the GI Frizette S. at Belmont Oct. 10, she turned the tables on that rival with a two-length upset tally at 6-1 on the big stage at Keeneland most recently Nov. 6.

The Davona Dale 7-5 morning-line favorite has drawn post three. Irad Ortiz, Jr. will ride.

“It was a box that I was never sure that I would check, training a champion, so it was nice to get that accomplished,” trainer Butch Reid, Jr. said. “She's doing really well. We're very happy with her. She's acclimated to the weather down here. We've been down here a couple of months already, so we've taken our time and so far, so good.”

Reid added, “I expect her to run well. We don't have the screws completely tightened for this one, but it should be a nice stepping-stone with some big races down the line in mind.”

Juddmonte homebred Millefeuille (Curlin), from the loaded female family of Broodmare of the Year Toussaud (El Gran Senor), has the look of a potential upsetter.

A smart maiden winner at second asking going this same distance at Belmont Oct. 23, she just got reeled in late by the unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Malathaat (Curlin) after enjoying a clear lead in the stretch in the nine-furlong GII Demoiselle S. over a sloppy track last time Dec. 5. The bay fired a four-furlong warning shot in :48 4/5 (1/9) at Hall of Famer Bill Mott's Payson base Feb. 14.

Curlin's Catch (Curlin) looks to stay perfect on dirt while riding a two-race winning streak. After earning her diploma over track and trip at third asking Jan. 3, the Breeze Easy runner took care of business in Tampa's Suncoast S. most recently Feb. 6.

Malathaat–Miraculously–Leads Home Curlin 1-2-3 in Demoiselle

‘TDN Rising Star’ Malathaat (Curlin) did not look like a winner through the first mile of Aqueduct’s GII Demoiselle S., but turned things around late with a surprisingly strong rally to keep her perfect record in tact.

Away well from her rail draw, the 2-5 favorite settled in a ground-saving third as an eager Traffic Lane took control, clicking off a :23.69 first quarter with Juddmonte homebred Millefeuille (Curlin) pressing from second. Losing some traction as the half went in :48.50, the $1.05-million KEESEP buy was passed by Malibu Curl (Curlin) and looked like she was not taking to the muddy surface as another foe went by her on the backstretch. Splitting horses at the hope of the lane, Malathaat came alive in the lane, swallowing up ground late to nail Millefeuille just before the wire for a 3/4-length score. Malibu Curl completed a trifecta for leading sire Curlin.

A debut winner going seven panels at Belmont Oct. 9, Malathaat romped by 7 3/4 lengths next out in the one-mile Tempted S. at Aqueduct Nov. 6.

“In her first two wins, she was pretty straightforward and didn’t get a lot of dirt in her face or anything like that,” conditioner Todd Pletcher said. “She was on-and-off the bridle and a little bit green, still, and there was a little bit of traffic, but in the end, she found more and showed the quality filly that she is. Some lesser quality horses might have thrown in the towel at some stage, but when she got rolling, she was impressive.”

He continued, “She wasn’t comfortable inside. I think she was unsure of the footing early on. Sometimes drawing the rail is great and this time it seemed to have backfired on us a couple of times. In the final eighth of a mile, she was able to get into her comfort zone and rhythm and that’s when she showed what she’s all about.”

“Her class was what kept her going and got here there on time,” said Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez. “She was never comfortable and not running into a spot I wanted. She never really put that much effort into keeping a spot. Finally, when I tipped her out heading to the quarter-pole, she started running.”

Pedigree Notes:

Malathaat is the 35th graded winner for leading sire Curlin and one of 72 black-type scorers by the Hill ‘n’ Dale stalwart. She is also one of two graded winners at Aqueduct Saturday out of an A.P. Indy mare, following GIII Go For Wand H. heroine Sharp Starr. Malathaat is a daughter of Grade I winner and fellow ‘TDN Rising Star’ Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy), who was campaigned by Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Stables with Pletcher and Velazquez. Out of dual Grade I victress Dream Rush (Wild Rush), Dream of Julia is a half-sister to ‘TDN Rising Stars’ Dream Pauline (Tapit), a two-time Grade III winner, and Atreides (Medaglia d’Oro), a stakes-winning young stallion. Malathaat is the third foal out of Dreaming of Julia, but the first to make the races. The 10-year-old mare has since produced a yearling colt by Medaglia d’Oro and a weanling Curlin filly. She was bred back to Medaglia d’Oro.

Malathaat Looms Large in Demoiselle

Undefeated ‘TDN Rising Star’ Malathaat (Curlin) looks to remain perfect as she steps up to graded company in Saturday’s GII Demoiselle S. at Aqueduct. A decisive debut winner going seven panels at Belmont Oct. 9, the $1.05-million KEESEP buy romped by 7 3/4 lengths in the one-mile Tempted S. at this oval Nov. 6.

“You would think with her pedigree and the way she won going a mile that a stretch out should not be an issue,” trainer Todd Pletcher told the NYRA notes team. “She’s always trained like a quality filly that wants two turns, so we’re excited about stretching her out. This filly has been a star from day one basically.”

Bill Mott saddles a promising daughter of Curlin in Juddmonte homebred Millefeuille. Runner-up in her one-mile Belmont unveiling Sept. 26, the bay graduated by four lengths over that track and trip Oct. 23.

“It definitely was a nice debut,” said Juddmonte Farms general manager Garrett O’Rourke. “You always want these horses to have ability, but it’s nice to see them know where the line is and have some try in them. She ran hard to the line. Todd’s filly looks like she’s got some possible superstar potential and so we’ll probably have to run a little harder this time around.”

Tom Albertrani also sends out a Curlin filly who graduated at second asking in Malibu Curl. Making a mild late bid to be sixth in her career bow at Saratoga Aug. 2, the chestnut earned her diploma next out in a seven-furlong test at the Spa Sept. 6.

Allen Stable’s Cafe Society (Empire Maker) donned cap and gown on debut at Belmont Oct. 18 and was third last time in the Tempted.

“I was disappointed in her last race, but she’s come back and trained well,” said Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey. “She had a really good breeze and galloped out well, so hopefully we’ll see a little better performance than we did the last time. I couldn’t have asked for any more.”

CURLIN FILLIES CLASH

3rd-BEL, 63K, Msw, 2yo, f, 1m, post time: 2:04 p.m. EDT

This loaded maiden has some of the best pedigrees in the stud book represented, starting with Chad Brown’s AMERICAN WEST (Curlin), whose GIII-winning dam is a half-sister to leading second-crop sire Constitution (Tapit). Granddam Baffled (Distorted Humor) had a yearling filly by Medaglia d’Oro sell in Book 1 last week at Keeneland September, who hammered to Whisper Hill Farm for $1.1 million. American West was a $925,000 purchase herself last year at the same sale and debuts for Peter Brant. American West’s sire has another firster in the race–Millefeuille (Curlin)–and this Bill Mott trainee is from the swoon-worthy Juddmonte family of Broodmare of the Year Toussaud (El Gran Senor), her great-granddam. Millefeuille’s unraced dam is out of Toussaud’s sole GI-winning daughter, Honest Lady (Seattle Slew). Jouster (Noble Mission {GB}) gets another shot here after a decent second on debut going six panels at Saratoga Aug. 29. She should appreciate the added distance as three generations of her direct female line–Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat), My Flag (Easy Goer), and Personal Ensign (Private Account)–all won Breeders’ Cups in addition to other Grade I events at route distances.

‘BEAUTY’ DESCENDANTS FACE OFF

7th-CD, 75K, Msw, 3yo/up, 7f, post time: 3:48 p.m. EDT

Bringing a cool $1 million as a Keeneland November weanling in 2017, EMPERADOR (Curlin) will be unveiled for the Chad Brown barn and the four-pronged partnership of Dell Ridge Farm, Doug Branham, International Equities Holding, and Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings. The half to Grade I winner and hot Hill ‘n’ Dale sire Violence (Medaglia d’Oro) hails from the family of champions Sky Beauty (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and Maplejinsky (Nijinsky II), his third and fourth dams, respectively. Emperador will have to get past fellow firster Turnagain Tide (Into Mischief), a $750,000 Keeneland September yearling from the exact same female family as Emperador. Turnagain Tide’s third dam, Stick to Beauty (Illustrious), began the ‘Beauty’ dynasty, and it was her daughter, champion Gold Beauty (Mr. Prospector), who is the dam of the aforementioned Maplejinsky as well as European champion Dayjur (Danzig). Turnagain Tide will wear the OXO Equine colors for the barn of Brad Cox.

ARROGATE’S HALF-SISTER DEBUTS

5th-WO, 126.8K, Msw, 2yo, f, 7f (AWT), post time: 3:23 p.m. EDT

A stellar field of promising hopefuls has been assembled for this maiden, highlighted by a half-sister to the late, great Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song) named DIAMOND ORE (Tapit). Diamond Ore took the first step toward emulating her half-brother, a champion and multiple Grade I winner, with a $750,000 weanling pricetag at Keeneland November. The Clearview Stable colorbearer, who debuts for the Barbara Minshall barn, is out of Bubbler (Distorted Humor), while her third dam is champion Meadow Star (Meadowlake). Not too many famiiles are hotter right now than Charles Fipke’s homebred ‘Shirl’ line, and the Roger Attfield barn unleashes another one in Speightstown Shirl (Speightstown). The homebred is a full-sibling to Shirl’s Speight, who won the GIII Marine S. in July, and both are out of GI Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Perfect Shirl (Perfect Soul {Ire}), who is a half-sister to 2007 GI Woodbine Mile S. winner Shakespeare (Theatrical {Ire}) and to the dam of last week’s GI Natalma S. victress Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown). Diamond Ore and Speightstown Shirl will be joined in the gate by Live Oak Plantation’s Souper Sensational (Curlin), a $725,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling from the Mark Casse barn whose unraced dam is a half-sister to GI Ogden Phipps H. winner Tiz Miz Sue (Tiznow) and to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint victor Bulletin (City Zip).
