Dubawi’s Military Law Turns Back Time In Al Maktoum Classic

Winless since taking out Round 1 of the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge going this track's 1600 metres way back in January 2021 and second in this race the year prior, Military Law (Ire) (g, 9, Dubawi {Ire}–Marine Bleue {Ire}, by Desert Prince {Ire}) led home a 1-2 finish for his legendary sire in Saturday's G2 Al Maktoum Classic, besting a valiant Walk of Stars (Ire) by a length on the wire.

Content on taking a chasing role as Aldous Huxley (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was hard-ridden to set fast early sections in advance of Quip (Distorted Humor), Military Law settled in fourth position, with Walk of Stars just ahead of him and to his inside in the run down the back of the track. Aldous Huxley had run his race with the better part of 800 metres left to travel, and Military Law was first to make a move, as Oscar Chavez decisively sent him to the front at the far corner of the track. So as not to get trapped down inside of a rallying Clapton (Brethren), Tadhg O'Shea angled Walk of Stars off the inside and into the three path, with Military Law the target as the field turned into the straight. The veteran pinched a bit of a break and though Walk of Stars kept battling to the death, he couldn't quite reel in Military Law. Clapton, drawn three and a horse that prefers to race in clear air, was trapped inside and midfield early before improving into the first four nearing the turn. Pulled out wide to deliver his challenge, he appeared to have every chance when push came to shove, but just failed to finish off his race and settled for third.

“I wasn't expecting this at all!” said Chavez after his biggest Thoroughbred winner in Dubai. “He jumped a little bit awkward, but then he put himself in the race and once he got to the straight he really had momentum and at the 800 [metres] he gave me a big kick and I just let him roll.”

Chavez has ridden successfully in a variety of jurisdictions, including Japan, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore. He won last year's Dubai Kahayla Classic for Purebred Arabians aboard Hayyan (Fr).

“Winning a race tonight is so fantastic; I'm happy to be on him today and to ride in the World Cup would be something extra.”

Well-beaten in this race last year, Military Law was having his fourth run this prep, having finished seventh in handicap company Nov. 24 before narrowly missing in the Listed Entisar S. over track and trip Dec. 22. The bay was exiting a sixth, beaten 7 3/4 lengths by Kabirkhan (California Chrome) in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Jan. 26. The latter is training up to the G1 Dubai World Cup, in which Military Law secured a berth with Saturday's victory.

Pedigree Notes

One of countless of his sire's offspring to strike over the Dubai dirt, Military Law–who was bought back on a bid of 900,000gns at Tattersalls October in 2016–is a half-brother to French listed winner Marina Piccola (Ire) (Halling), the dam of G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin and HH The Amir Trophy hero French King (GB) (French Fifteen {Fr}) and the latter's G3 Prix d'Hedouville-winning full-brother Mutabahi (Fr). Military Law's full-brother Wednaan (GB) was third in the 2014 G3 UAE 2000 Guineas.

A Group 3 winner in Germany, Marine Bleue is also responsible for Qatar Racing's Tiptoe (GB) (Lightning Spear {GB}), a maiden winner at second asking at Wolverhampton last October, and her last listed produce is a 2-year-old full-sister to Tiptoe.

Thoroughbred racing's top stars have been nominated for the highly anticipated 25th running of the Dubai World Cup, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Meydan Racecourse. Among the global stars highlighting the nominations are Knicks Go, Charlatan, Bivouac, Chrono Genesis, Addeybb and Mogul. A total of 1,511 nominations were accepted from 762 horses trained in 19 countries.

The Group 1 $12 million Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates Airline saw a total of 176 nominations led by a strong USA representation including G1 Pegasus World Cup winner Knicks Go, and Bob Baffert-trained G1 Runhappy Malibu Stakes-winner Charlatan. Other major contenders include multiple G1 winner Code Of Honor, Godolphin's undefeated Brendan Walsh trainee Maxfield, G2 winners Sleepy Eyes Todd, and Tax, with the latter trained by Danny Gargan, one of the new trainers to have nominated this year. Tacitus who finished fourth in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Classic returns, after having nominated last year as well.

John Gosden's Dubai Warrior who is expected to make a Dubai debut in the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd 2 also joins the list. Musabbeh Al Mheiri's Military Law is expected to shine among the UAE contenders, as are Capezzano, Matterhorn and Kimbear. Contested over 2000m (1 1/4 miles) on dirt, it has been won by horses trained in France, Japan, UAE, UK, and USA in its first 24 runnings.

The Group 1 $5 million Longines Dubai Sheema Classic promises to be a star-studded affair, with Addeybb, ranked 3rd Best Racehorse in the Longines World Racing Awards, topping the nominations. With an impressive rating of impressive 125, the 7-year-old is trained by William Haggas, and it is no surprise, he is the highest rated horse amongst those nominated for this race. The Japanese representation is led by multiple G1-winning mare Chrono Genesis, who most recently won the G1 Arima Kinen at the end of 2020. The returning G1 and multiple G2 winner Glory Vase adds greater depth. Other G1 winners in competition include Bill Mott's Channel Maker, David Smaga's Nao Da Mais, and Aidan O'Brien's Mogul. Trainers Saeed bin Suroor, John Gosden and Charlie Appleby are the most successful saddlers in this race, with two wins apiece, while Great Britain has had the most success with seven wins so far.

The Group 1 $4 million Dubai Turf sponsored by DP World has an impressive line-up of nominations with contestants looking to fill the rather large shoes of 2019 winner and the now retired Japanese Superstar Almond Eye. Some of the heavy hitters include John Gosden's Lord North, winner of the G1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes, Bahrain International Trophy winner Simsir from the stables of Fawzi Nass, G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes Champion Colonel Liam and G2 Fort Lauderdale Stakes winner Largent, both under the care of USA trainer Todd Pletcher. European representation comes through G1 Queen Anne Stakes winner & G2 Singspiel Stakes victor Lord Glitters, trained by David O'Meara. John Gosden also saddles Global Giant who finished second in the Bahrain International Trophy.

American winners account for 13 of 24 editions of the G1 $1.5 million Dubai Golden Shaheen sponsored by Gulf News. This year a robust offering comes from the USA, including Peter Miller's G1 winner and Breeders' Cup Sprint runner-up C Z Rocket, Steve Asmussen's G2 winner Yaupon, Doug O'Neill's multiple G3 winner Wildman Jack, and Bob Baffert's Ax Man. 2019 Dubai Golden Shaheen runner-up Matera Sky from the stables of Hideyuki Mori, and Yoshito Yahagi's Justin highlight the Japanese contingent. Local favorite Gladiator King adds value to the line-up.

The Group 1 $1 million Al Quoz Sprint sponsored by Azizi Developments over 1200m (six furlongs) on turf has attracted nominations from across the globe. By far the best accomplished entrant is Australian star sprinter and multiple G1 winner Bivouac, trained by James Cummings for Godolphin, most recent winner of the G1 VRC Sprint Classic at Flemington in November. Other G1 winners in the field include Oleksandra who made her debut in Australia, before moving to the stables of American trainer Neil Drysdale, UK conditioner Roger Teal's Oxted who won the G1, Darley July Cup Stakes, and South African trainer Corne Spies' trainee Van Halen. Amongst the UAE brigade, G3 winners Down On Da Bayou and Lazuli, are just some of the local luminaries nominated.

The three Group 2 events on the day, the $750,000 UAE Derby sponsored by Emirates NBD, $750,000 Godolphin Mile and $750,000 Dubai Gold Cup sponsored by Al Tayer Motors, have attracted strong global interest.

The UAE Derby, contested over 1900m draws in plenty of interest form the USA, with Steve Asmussen's Jackie's Warrior winner of the G1 Runhappy Hopeful Stakes & G1 Champagne Stakes, leading the charge. Other notable entries include Doug O'Neill-trained Hot Rod Charlie- 2nd in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and Bob Baffert's well regarded G2 winner and G1-placed, Spielberg and Medina Spirit. UAE in-form company include Zhou Storm, winner in two of three starts, Mnasek, and Soft Whisper. The UAE remains the most successful country in this race, with Saeed bin Suroor garnering all eight wins, his most recent with two-time Dubai World Cup-winner Thunder Snow in 2017.

Nominations for the 1600m Group 2 $750,000 Godolphin Mile, are highlighted by Hong Kong star Elusive State, multiple G2 winning Mr Freeze, the G2 Fayette Stakes at Keeneland in October his most recent victory, under the watch of American conditioner Dale Romans. Fawzi Nass' Port Lions, who finished fourth in the Bahrain International Trophy and is another international winner to watch out for. With 16 wins the UAE remains the dominating force in this race. Frankie Dettori's seven wins is a record in the Mile.

The Dubai Gold Cup contested over a challenging 3200m on turf, and won in 2019 by 2018 Melbourne Cup Champion Cross Counter, sees nominations from multiple Melbourne Cup-placed Prince of Arran, the returning Jamie Osborne-trainee Mekong, French G1 winner Call the Wind, most recently 3rd in the G1 Qatar Prix du Cadron at Longchamp, Mark Johnston's G1 Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp-winner Subjectivist and Andrew Balding's G2 winner-Spanish Mission, whose most recent victory came in the G2 Doncaster Cup Stakes.

Frankie Dettori Doubles On Opening Night Of Dubai World Cup Carnival

The Longines World's Best Jockey Frankie Dettori will be riding in the UAE through March, and recorded victories in the final two of seven races on opening night at the Dubai World Cup Carnival at Meydan Racecourse on Thursday.

Dettori piloted Godolphin's Land of Legends to win the Group 2 Al Fahidi Fort for trainer Saeed bin Suroor, and Equilateral to win the listed Dubai Dash for trainer Charlie Hills.

“I've been watching this horse for the last three years,” Dettori said of Equilateral. “What he likes is a very fast, slick, five furlong track. Sometimes the English tracks are too demanding for him, but this is tailor-made for him.”

“I'm really enjoying my time here, maybe because I'm running out of years but I'm trying to taking it all in.  Most people are locked in their houses doing nothing, and at least I get to do what I love. I am going to stay here in the united Arab Emirates until Super Saturday.”

Thursday's highlight was the Group 2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1. Won in inspired fashion by Nasir Askar's Musabbeh Al Mheiri-trained Military Law in a perfectly executed stalk-and-pounce trip, the 1600m (one mile) test set the stage for what could be an exciting season for middle-distance dirt racing in the region.

Piloted by Antonio Fresu, the son of Dubawi broke alertly and settled well on the rail behind favourite Capezzano, who set strong fractions under Mickael Barzalona. Waiting patiently for that rival to show any signs of resignation, the bay 6-year-old pounced on the opportunity when it presented itself at the top of the lane, asserted and then held off late-closing Dubai Creek Mile (Listed) winner Thegreatcollection, as well as Burj Nahaar (G3) winner Salute the Soldier to win by 1 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:36.42. The same margin separated second and third, with Capezzano capsizing into seventh of 11 starters.

An invitee to the subsequently cancelled 2020 Dubai World Cup (G1), Military Law won for the fifth time in 11 starts and landed his second stakes after The Entisar (Listed) 13 months ago. Bred in England, he is a half-brother to the dam of G1 winner French King and was in the care of John Gosden until mid-2019, winning half his first six starts for breeder Qatar Racing. He was sold to Askar at Tattersalls July 2019 for $144,641.

“He has been training really well in the morning and I got a very good feeling in the last couple of gallops,” Fresu said. “Today he travelled really well, probably because he is fresh, so he travelled very well into the race and when I asked him to go, he really picked up well. Now we need to see after this. He has an entry into Saudi and otherwise the option is going to be (the Al) Maktoum Challenge Round 2 and (Round) 3 and then Dubai World Cup.”

One race prior, the first of three Group 2 races took place in the nine-furlong Singspiel (G2) on turf, named for the only horse to win both the Japan Cup (G1) and Dubai World Cup (G1) and won the past three years by owner Godolphin and trainer Saeed bin Suroor. This year, the team started favourite Military March, who had the services of Frankie Dettori, but said charge never appeared to get involved (finishing eighth) as late-running Lord Glitters trounced foes with a rush under Adrie de Vries.

Breaking slowly and sitting near the tail of the field, the veteran Group 1 winner closed resolutely between horses in the lane for trainer David O'Meara, winning going away by three lengths at the end and leaving a sea of Godolphin blue in his wake. Charlie Appleby's 2020 Zabeel Mile (G2) winner Zakouski closed well to be second 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Bin Suroor-trained Dream Castle, winner of this in 2019. The final time was a spritely 1:46.82 for the same nine furlongs over which the Lord Glitters was third to the great Almond Eye in the 2019 Dubai Turf (G1).

The globetrotting 8-year-old winner was victorious for the eighth time in 33 starts and in his third country. A Royal Ascot winner of the Queen Anne (G1) in 2019, the big grey son of Whipper has competed in top company in France, England, America, Canada, Dubai and Bahrain.

“He missed the kick a bit, but I didn't want to push any buttons early, he can be very keen,” De Vries said. “The pace was good enough just to leave him there. He did things so quickly, I thought I had a long way to make up, but half way through the straight I was sure to win. They ran at a good pace, which helped me a lot. After this, I can't see any reason not to go back (to the Dubai Turf) and he is a bit older now and with a little sun on his back, he should return to his old form.”
