Sire Vino Rosso Gets His First Stakes Winner In Bashford Manor

Representing freshman sire Vino Rosso, The Wine Steward recorded that stallion's first stakes winner with a victory at Ellis Park in the Bashford Manor S.

With a maiden-breaking score by 6 lengths against New York state-bred company May 28 at Belmont Park, the Mike Maker trainee shipped to Kentucky. Off at odds of 2-1, the bay colt chased leaders Go Otto Go (Bolt d'Oro) and Call Me Andy (Midshipman) to the outside of the second flight. Rounding the far turn, the $340,000 OBSMAR buy went three-wide with good energy and he put away his rivals past the eighth pole to win by 2 3/4 lengths over Wilson Q.

Out of a female family which includes MGSW Isotherm (Lonhro {Aus}), GISP Giant Game (Giant's Causeway) and GSW Skelly (Practical Joke), the winner is his dam's first offspring. She has also produced a yearling colt by Authentic and she foaled a filly by Curlin Mar. 6.

Vino Rosso’s The Wine Steward Impresses On Debut At Belmont

1st-Belmont, $75,000, (S), Msw, 5-28, 2yo, 5f, :58.68, ft, 6 lengths.
THE WINE STEWARD (c, 2, Vino Rosso–Call to Service, by To Honor and Serve) brought a final bid of $340,000 from trainer Michael Maker at OBS March earlier this year after breezing in :10.2 to be the second-highest progeny of his freshman sire (by Curlin) at the sale. A popular choice at the window, the bay drew the inside gate at post-time odds of 2-5 and, despite a hesitant beginning, stayed in contention with a rail-skimming ride around the far turn. As space opened up, he darted through an opening past the quarter pole, drew past pacesetter Khadullah (Mission Impazible), and was kept to task into the final sixteenth before easing up close to home for the six-length win. Khadullah was another 3 3/4 lengths clear for second. The first foal out of a half-sister to MGSW Isotherm (Lonhro {Aus}), GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile third Giant Game (Giant's Causeway) and GISP Gio Game (Gio Ponti), The Wine Steward now has a yearling half-brother from the first crop of GI Kentucky Derby winner Authentic and a newborn half-sister by Curlin. Spendthrift's Vino Rosso now stands at two winners from his first crop. Sales History: $70,000 Ylg '22 SARAUG; $340,000 2yo '23 OBSMAR. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $41,250. Gaslight Dancer Burns Bright In Palisades S.

Taking to the Haggin Turf Course once again, 6-1 shot Gaslight Dancer recorded his first stakes victory of his career with a solid performance in the Palisades S. on Sunday afternoon.

Winning on the grass at Kentucky Downs Sept. 3 in his second career start, Gaslight Dancer was the favorite Oct. 9 in the GIII Futurity S. during the BAQ meet, only to lose by a neck to Nagirroc (Lea). With a tough test Nov. 4 in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, he drew the fourteenth hole, but still turned in a respectable sixth.

Back at Keeneland in this spot, the $260,000 OBSAPR buy patiently waited his turn along the rail as Bushido (First Samurai) blazed a trail. Into the stretch, a trio of suitors vied for the lead, while the Mike Maker trainee cut to the outside. The bay colt flashed a nice turn of foot and passed his tiring rivals to win by 1 1/2 length over late-running 51-1 longshot Two of a Kind (Overanalyze).

“Looks pretty good,” trainer Mike Maker said about his horse's improvement over this past year. “I know last year he was pretty headstrong. [Today] he looked like he settled nice, saved ground and kicked home. Last year, he was all out wanting to go for the lead. I still think he'll stretch out to a mile.”

The first of his dam's progeny, the winner also has a 2-year-old half-brother named Moon Raid (Munnings). His dam is a half-sister to GSW Summer Raven (Summer Squall), who is responsible for MGSW Lewis Bay (Bernadini) and GIII Holy Bull S. victor Winslow Homer (Unbridled Song). The 8-year-old bay mare RNA'd last November for $250,000 at Keeneland while in foal to McKinzie.
