Camelot’s Pensee Du Jour Romps To Rose de Mai Triumph

Ballymore Thoroughbred Racing's undefeated 3-year-old filly Pensee Du Jour (Ire) (Camelot {GB}–Painter's Pride {Fr}, by Dansili {GB}) delivered a spectacular winning debut last month, attaining 'TDN Rising Star' status with a four-length tally atop Chantilly's all-weather surface, and made a smooth transition into black-type company with an impressive pillar-to-post victory on the turf in Thursday's Listed Prix Rose de Mai at Saint-Cloud. The 1-2 favourite broke smartly and held sway throughout the 10-furlong contest. Unflustered and dominating into the straight, she was allowed an inch of rein soon after passing the quarter-mile marker and lengthened clear in effortless style in the latter stages to easily outclass toiling rivals by daylight. At the line, she was seven lengths too good for the overmatched Olkovskha (Fr) (Zelzal {Fr}), herself three lengths clear of Cracksmania (GB) (Cracksman {GB}).

“It was not the plan to make the running, but she has early speed and the idea was to travel handy,” explained rider Mickael Barzalona. “We found ourselves in front and she settled well and travelled smoothly. She is an easy ride, she does what you want and has a nice acceleration. You can feel that she still has a lot to learn, but what she has done so far is very good and most promising. She has all it takes to make a top filly and has a lot going for her, but still has a few steps to climb to get there.”

Pensee Du Jour is the latest of three reported foals, all winners, produced by an unraced daughter of GII Long Island H.-winning matriarch Peinture Bleue (Alydar). The January-foaled homebred bay–who boasts entries in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, G1 Prix Saint-Alary and G1 Prix de Diane–is a half-sister to Group 3-winning G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen third Canvassed (Ire) (Shamardal). Peinture Bleue, in turn, is responsible for a sextet of stakes performers, headed by MG1SW sire Peintre Celebre (Nureyev), G2 Prix de Pomone victrix Peinture Rare (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and G3 Prix de Barbeville winner Pointilliste (Giant's Causeway). Her many black-type descendants also include MG1SW dual South African champion Jet Dark (SAf) (Trippi).

War Front’s Ancient Rome Returns In Style At Chantilly

Coolmore and Westerberg's dual Group 1-placed 4-year-old colt Ancient Rome (War Front–Gagnoa {Ire}, by Sadler's Wells) returns off a ninth in June's G1 Prix du Jockey Club when last seen and registers a stylish comeback win at Chantilly in his first start for over nine months.

6th-Chantilly, €18,000, Cond, 3-7, 4yo, 9f (AWT), 1:50.78, st.
ANCIENT ROME (c, 4, War Front–Gagnoa {Ire} {MGSW & MG1SP-Fr, G1SP-Ire, $597,492}, by Sadler's Wells) snagged the G3 Prix des Chenes and placed in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and G1 Criterium International as a juvenile, but had not been seen since running ninth in last June's G1 Prix du Jockey Club on the turf here. Under a tight grip in fourth for the most part, the 1-2 favourite loomed large out wide with 350 metres remaining and coasted home in second gear once cruising to the front approaching the final furlong. At the line, he was value for much more than the half-length margin back to Marvanco (Fr) (George Vancouver). Ancient Rome is the seventh of 10 foals and one of seven scorers from as many runners produced by MGSW G1 Prix Saint-Alary, G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Irish Oaks placegetter Gagnoa (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). He is a full-brother to G3 Naas Juvenile Fillies Sprint victrix Etoile and kin to Listed Prix Amandine third Galateia (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and a 2-year-old filly and yearling filly by Justify. The January-foaled dark bay's dam, who was bred to Gun Runner last year, is kin to three black-type winners, namely G1 Derby-winning sire Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), GSW G1 Irish Derby third Dawn Patrol (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Listed Salsabil S. victrix Kissed (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Gagnoa's siblings also include the dam of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Lifetime Record: GSW & MG1SP-Fr, 10-4-2-1, €222,030. Lope De Vega’s Algolia Powers To TDN Rising Stardom At Chantilly

Andre Fabre's team has hit the ground running as winter slowly transitions to spring and the veteran maestro unleashed G1 Prix de Diane entry Algolia (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Viva Rafaela {Brz}, by Know Heights {Ire}) to claim 'TDN Rising Stardom' with a scintillating performance in Tuesday's Prix du Soissonnais over one mile at Chantilly.

Her victory was the middle leg of a Fabre hat-trick on the card, the trainer also successful with the dual Group 1-placed Ancient Rome (War Front) coming back off a nine-month break and capping a treble initiated by Swing Vote (GB) (Shamardal) in the colts' and geldings' division of the one-mile maiden. Fabre is also responsible for Europe's first Rising Star of the year, Pensee Du Jour (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), who impressed on debut at the same venue last month. The stable's thermostat is set to hot and running at over 40% with 13 wins from 32 attempts this year.

The 3-1 second choice broke smartly from the outside stall and stalked the tempo in a close second for most of this debutantes' heat. Nudged along to seize control passing the quarter-mile pole, she quickened clear approaching the final furlong and powered further away from stablemate Firyali (GB) (New Bay {GB}) in the closing stages to hit the line with an impressive five-length buffer, becoming the 10th Rising Star for her sire (by Shamardal). Lope De Vega's 'Rising Star' roll of honour also features GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and GI Just A Game heroine Newspaperofrecord (Ire), National Stud resident Lope Y Fernandez (Ire), who placed five times at the highest level, and another GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf victrix in Aunt Pearl (Ire).

Algolia is the fifth foal and scorer produced by G1 Grande Premio Diana (Brazilian Oaks) heroine and GI Flower Bowl third Viva Rafaela (Brz) (Know Heights {Ire}), herself a daughter of G1 Grande Premio Marciano de Aguiar Moreira victrix Linda Rafaela (Brz) (Bin Ajwaad {Ire}). The April-foaled homebred chestnut is a half-sister to last term's Listed Prix Charles Laffitte scorer Babala (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Viva Rafaela, whose family features a swathe of Brazilian elite-level performers, is kin to the Group 1-placed duo Baby Go Far (Brz) (Elusive Quality) and Unique Zuca (Brz) (Northern Afleet). The latter threw GSW G1 Grande Premio Cruzeiro do Sul runner-up Galaxy Runner (Brz) (Drosselmeyer) while another half-sister, Awesome Rafaela (Brz) (Elusive Quality), is the dam of GII Edgewood S. victrix New Year's Eve (Kitten's Joy).

City of Light’s Mimi Kakushi Too Strong in UAE 1000 Guineas

Having celebrated a maiden-breaking victory in the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial over seven furlongs Dec. 23, MIMI KAKUSHI (f, 3, City of Light–Rite Moment, by Vicar) ran out a convincing 4 1/2-length winner of Friday's $150,000 Listed UAE 1000 Guineas at Meydan. The bay, fourth in her first two trips to the races over sprint distances in November and early December, jumped well enough for Mickael Barzalona, but was beaten for speed by Awasef (Cairo Prince) to the outside and was ultimately eased back and into the two path to chase from second. Shadowing the pacesetter into the final 700 meters, Mimi Kakushi was roused to the front with a quarter-mile to travel and put the race to bed while striding readily clear. Awasef held second ahead of the one-start maiden Unjokable (Practical Joke).

“She was happy to be on the pace and the extra furlong was a help as well,” said Barzalona, winning this race for the second time after Nashmiah in 2017. “I think she will run a good race in the [1900m] UAE Oaks too.”

Bin Ghadayer added, “We have four weeks until the Oaks which is enough time for a rest; she will just need one breeze before the race. She is the best filly I've trained.”

A $180,000 purchase out of the 2021 Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale, Mimi Kakushi was hammered down for $250,000 at that same auction house's Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale after breezing a furlong in :10 1/5 over the Timonium dirt track. A fourth stakes winner for her sire (by Quality Road), Mimi Kakushi is a half-sister to dual black-type winner Moment Is Right (Medaglia d'Oro) and SW Laudation (Congrats). Rite Moment is also the dam of a yearling filly by Cajun Breeze and is due to Khozan this term.
