Corazon’s G3 Prix d’Arenberg Win A Stakes First For Markaz

Syndicate supremo Nick Bradley and George Boughey hooked up to secure the trainer's first pattern-race triumph with Oscula (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) in last month's G3 Prix Six Perfections at Deauville and the burgeoning axis repeated the dose as their 2-year-old filly Corazon (Ire) (Markaz {Ire}) battled to a career high in Thursday's G3 Prix d'Arenberg over the straight five furlongs at ParisLongchamp. She had earlier registered a July 30 debut fourth tackling five furlongs at Worlverhampton, graduating in an Aug. 10 novice test over the same distance at Lingfield last time, and went postward as a 17-2 chance for this stakes and turf bow. Corazon broke sharply and occupied a front-end berth through the early fractions of this dash. Scrubbed along once headed at halfway, she was under the full weight of Mickael Barzalona's drive when tackling Listed Prix La Fleche victrix and G3 Prix de Cabourg runner-up Dizzy Bizu (Ire) (Caravaggio) passing the furlong marker and would not be denied in the closing stages to edge that rival by a neck in game fashion, becoming the first stakes winner for her second-crop sire (by Dark Angel {Ire}).

“It's great to have another stakes winner for Nick [Bradley], he's the biggest supporter of my yard and so we're very happy,” said trainer George Boughey after claiming a second pattern-race success. “Mickael [Barzalona] is world class and has given her a peach of a ride. I was pretty keen for him to make plenty of use of her, to get her out and get her going. We've been pretty keen to make sure we have the right people on board when we travel to France and Mickael has done us another favour. The race looked a good opportunity and she'd worked like a filly that should be running in stakes races. It might have come one step too soon, but she was equal to it. She's always shown plenty of pace at home and I would imagine she will get six furlongs. Her work has always been pretty good and she's come a long way in a very short space of time. We'll get her home and see how she is, but I haven't really got a concrete plan for her. It wouldn't be a surprise to see her get an entry in the [G2] Flying Childers [at Doncaster next week]. I know that's a quick back-up, but it is a Group 2. She deserves a short break in training and there are lots of races she can go for towards the end of the season.”

Corazon, kin to a yearling filly by Dandy Man (Ire), is the fourth of five foals and leading performer from two scorers produced by a winning daughter of Dissonance (Ire) (Rossini), herself an unraced full-sister to G3 Firth of Clyde S. victrix Golden Legacy (Ire). Golden Legacy, in turn, is the dam of G3 Prix de Meautry runner-up Stake Acclaim (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) and hails from the family of G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas-winning sire Hawaiian Image (Jpn) (Father's Image), G1SW Chilean champion Prince Albert (Arg) (Slewsville), MGSW sire Saritamer (Dancer's Image) and MGSW G1 Cheveley Park S. runner-up Risky (GB) (Risk Me {Fr}).

Medaglia d’Oro Colt a New TDN Rising Star in France

Godolphin's Arqana Breeze-Up@Doncaster £675,000 sale topper Chancellery (Ire) (Medaglia d'Oro) was all the rage for Thursday's Prix de Fontenoy at ParisLongchamp and justified odds-on favouritism in the one-mile newcomers' test to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status with an impressive debut performance. The 7-10 pick shuffled for early positioning and found a slot stalking the pace in second by halfway. Looming large on the bridle approaching the quarter-mile marker, he was comfortably on top with 250 metres remaining and powered clear under minimal coaxing before gearing down to easily outclass Woozle (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) by 2 1/2 lengths.

Chancellery is the first of three foals produced by Listed River Memories S. winner Shelbysmile (Smart Strike), who was purchased by Mags O'Toole, on behalf of Lynn Lodge Stud, for 275,000gns at Tattersalls December in 2019. She is a half-sister to G2 Al Fahidi Fort victor Derbaas (Seeking the Gold), G3 Jebel Ali Mile scorer Chiefdom (The Factor) and to the dam of GIII Dowager S. victrix Blame Debbie (Blame). The March foaled-dark bay is kin to a yearling colt by Lope de Vega (Ire) and a weanling filly by Dark Angel (Ire). Quick Suzy Goes For Prix Morny, BC Juvenile Turf Sprint Berth Sunday

Royal Ascot winner Quick Suzy (IRE) is set to take on 13 rivals in the 6-furlong Group 1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville on Sunday. The Darley Prix Morny winner will receive an automatic berth into the $1 million Grade 2 Juvenile Turf Sprint through the international Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 84 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California, on Nov. 5-6.

Owned by the Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Quick Suzy blitzed her rivals in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Ascot on June 16 and will be looking to emulate Campanelle (IRE) by completing the Queen Mary-Prix Morny double, which Lady Aurelia also achieved in 2016.

Quick Suzy is trained by Gavin Cromwell in Navan, Ireland. Cromwell commented, “Quick Suzy goes for the Prix Morny. She was entered in the Phoenix Stakes (G1) at the Curragh last week, but we gave her a break after Ascot and the race just came too soon after that break. Fillies have a very good record in the Prix Morny and, on top of that, Queen Mary winners have a great record in it too, so it looks the right race for her. It fits perfectly into her schedule too. Gary Carroll will ride and we're really looking forward to the race. She's in great form.”

The Richard Hannon-trained and Al Shaqab Racing-owned Armor (GB) won the Group 3 Markel Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood by 3 ¼ lengths and steps up to Group 1 company for the first time. The son of No Nay Never will be ridden by Patrick Dobbs.

The unbeaten Velocidad (GB) took out the Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes at the Curragh on his second start. Trained by Joseph O'Brien, the 2-year-old son of Gleneagles (IRE) will be ridden by Ryan Moore for the first time.

Asymmetric (IRE) is another Group 2 winner in the field. The son of Showcasing (GB) built on his second-place finish in the Group 2 Tattersalls July Stakes at Newmarket to win the Group 2 Unibet Richmond Stakes in his latest start. Runner-up that day at Goodwood in the Unibet Richmond Stakes was Khunan (GB). The son of Twilight Son (GB) is one of two runners in the race for trainer Richard Fahey, who also saddles Group 2 Norfolk Stakes winner Perfect Power (IRE). Hollie Doyle and Christophe Soumillon are booked to ride, respectively.

The French challenge is headed by the Andre Fabre-trained Trident (FR). Impressive on debut, Trident was narrowly beaten in the Group 3 Darley Prix de Cabourg over course and distance. He will be partnered with Mickael Barzalona.

As a part of the benefits of the Challenge series, the Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the winner of the Darley Prix Morny to start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, which will be run at five furlongs over the Del Mar turf course. Breeders' Cup also will provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 25 to receive the rewards.

Home Win For France As Footstepsinthesand’s Marianafoot Takes The Maurice De Gheest

There were just three of the dozen to contest Sunday's G1 LARC Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville trained in France, but despite extremely tough foreign opposition the home team managed a surprise one-two led by Marianafoot (Fr) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). Prolific at a lower level of late, Jean-Claude Seroul's 6-year-old had captured the seven-furlong G3 Prix du Palais-Royal and G3 Prix de la Porte Maillot on ParisLongchamp's turning track May 30 and July 1 but was equally at home over the straight course here with Mickael Barzalona burying his mount in the stand's-side group early. Tacking on to the heels of the G1 July Cup hero Starman (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) inside the final two furlongs, the 9-1 shot sliced his way through a gap to swamp that 9-5 favourite passing the furlong pole. Readily asserting from there, the chestnut who was extending the amazing run of his owner-breeder and trainer Jerome Reynier in 2021 following the success of their Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over compatriot Tropbeau (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) at the finish. That 92-1 shot was the shock of the race as she denied Starman by a nose for the silver medal. “We've been targeting this for a while and in all his races beforehand we had in mind that they were preps for this,” Reynier explained. “We know he stays seven easily and I think he'll go a mile, so we had it in mind to make the running and turn it into a stamina test if need be. It was just a matter of getting an opening and he settled it within a matter of strides.”

With France winless in the six preceding domestic group 1 races, Marianafoot looked to have a tall order to stop that trend especially with such a potent international threat including the title holders of the July Cup, G1 Prix Jean Prat, G1 Commonwealth Cup, G1 Qipco British Champions Sprint S. and G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. Even allowing for his relentless progress since December, where he began his winning sequence in a conditions event over this trip on this venue's Polytrack, the idea of him upstaging such a stellar cast was in part fanciful and few would have predicted that the finish would involve a duo who were yet to figure at this level. Tried over a straight track on his fourth start this year in Chantilly's Listed Prix Servanne over six furlongs Apr. 26, he proved that held no fears before twice inflicting defeats on Duhail (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) at ParisLongchamp. After that rival had run such a fine race to be on the premises in the G1 Sussex S. last week, the portents were strong that he would at least be there at the business end and he was drawn favourably low which would aid his cause.

With the other 9-5 joint market-leader Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) proving difficult behind the stalls and fly-leaping and nearly unshipping Frankie Dettori exiting the stalls, she could almost be ruled out of contention even before she took too hard a grip racing far side. In a fascinating tactical affair, Maxime Guyon opted to pursue the Stonestreet sensation on Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) as they raced in isolation with Hollie Doyle adopting her usual front-running ploy on Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) up the centre and it may be no coincidence that this trio eventually filled the last three places. Following Glen Shiel was the G2 Lennox S. winner Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and Tropbeau, while stand's side the third of the French runners Ocean (Fr) (Exosphere {Aus}) led the Jean Prat hero Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) and Starman with the winner tucked in behind. Starman had forged ahead with 300 metres remaining, but Marianafoot was really picking up in his shadow and as that rival found extra the July Cup winner faded close home to lose second to Tropbeau who emerges with great credit.

“When I ran him over six furlongs at Chantilly, I considered it a test over a straight course and although the owner wasn't too keen to run I told him we needed to teach him something,” Reynier said. “That proved to be the right move, as since then he has been perfect. He is now a group 1 winner and a stallion prospect. We'll keep him in Deauville and keep him fresh to see if we go for the [G1 Prix Jacques le] Marois next week. I know Palace Pier is coming and he'll be a tough nut to crack, but if he's doing well we might well take our chance. Later, the obvious target is the [Oct. 3 G1 Prix de la] Foret [at ParisLongchamp] if the ground hasn't turned too soft by then. If we are lucky, we might finish in the Breeders' Cup Mile.”

Stephane Pasquier said of Tropbeau, “The filly showed very good acceleration to pip Starman and take second. It's all very satisfying.” Starman's owner David Ward commented, “Starman was beaten by the ground. We will have to travel outside Europe at some point to find ground that suits him. He still ran well, despite the conditions not being to his liking. The jockey confirmed our impression. On good ground, he's a different horse.”

Marianafoot's dam Marianabaa (Fr) (Anabaa) is also responsible for the stable's 4-year-old Padron (Ire) (Gris de Gris {Ire}), who captured this year's Listed Prix Altipan and was third in the G3 Dusseldorfer Fruhjahrs-Meile. The second dam is the Listed Prix des Lilas scorer and G3 Prix Chloe runner-up Maria Gabriella (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), who produced the listed scorer Mariafoot (Fr) from a mating with Marianafoot's sire Footstepsinthesand. Maria Gabriella is kin to the Listed Prix Volterra winner and G3 Prix d'Aumale and G3 Prix Miesque runner-up Night of Light (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and to last year's G2 Dante S. runner-up Highest Ground (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Marianabaa's 3-year-old full-sister to Marianafoot named Marianansand (Fr) was fourth in the Listed Prix Aymeri de Mauleon this term, while she also has the unraced 2-year-old colt Mariananchic (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}).
