Lir Can Fly, But Can He Go The Mile?

LEXINGTON, KY–Tuesday brought about another bright but cool morning in Lexington, and the European Breeders’ Cup contingent-all bar the Ballydoyle brigade, which touched down in Lexington late on Monday evening and will be ensconced in quarantine until Thursday-had another opportunity to stretch their legs at Keeneland. The English and Irish Guineas winners Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) and Siskin (First Defence) were among those who took to the training track for the second straight day, with Kameko once again catching the eye in a light gallop just as dawn broke. Siskin once again displayed his well being by throwing in a periodic hop and swivelling his head to take in all the sights as he went about his work, but the Ger Lyons trainee looked a picture of good health and appears to have taken his travels well.

Five Europeans-GII Juvenile Turf Sprint entrant Ubettabelieveit (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) in addition to the fillies Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Glass Slippers (GB) (Dream Ahead), Miss Amulet (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire})) and One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus})–tested the Keeneland turf course for the first time on Tuesday.

G1 Prince of Wales’s S. winner Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was a standout among the John Gosden trio as he took to the training track alongside stablemates Terebellum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Mehdaayih (GB) (Frankel {GB}), and the GI Turf contender traveled enthusiastically on the bridle without being overeager through an easy gallop. Trainer Ralph Beckett, having arrived in Lexington on Monday night, was aboard a pony to oversee his GI Juvenile Turf runners New Mandate (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) and Devilwala (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). The G2 Royal Lodge S. winner New Mandate galloped freely ahead of his barnmate Devilwala, who was fourth in the G1 Dewhurst S. last out. Both horses are campaigned by owners relatively new to the game: Marc Chan bought New Mandate from a partnership headed by Beckett and Alex Elliott after a handicap win at Sandown in August, while Devilwala is among a talented bunch of 2-year-olds for Kia Joorabchian’s Amo Racing.

New Mandate landed in gate two for Friday’s Juvenile Turf at Monday evening’s post position draw and Devilwala in 13, the only horse to the inside of Qatar Racing’s The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}). The Lir Jet’s trainer Michael Bell was on hand to supervise his first Breeders’ Cup starter on Tuesday, having landed the evening before, and he was philosophical about the draw.

“The draw could have been kinder, but people seem to say you’re better off drawn wide than out low. Time will tell,” he said. “I watched the [2015 Juvenile Turf] when Hit It A Bomb won here, and he won from post 14 and had a great ride from Ryan Moore, so we hope Oisin [Murphy] can do the same.”

The Lir Jet skipped over the training track for the second straight morning on Tuesday, and Bell said he is pleased with how the colt has taken his journey.

“He seems very happy in himself and he’s eating well, which is the most important thing when they’ve traveled, because it can be a bit disruptive for them,” the trainer said. “But he looks in very good form when he’s out on the track in the morning. We’ve kept him on the training track just to keep a lid on him but he couldn’t have traveled better.

It was somewhat serendipitous circumstances that saw The Lir Jet land in Bell’s yard earlier this year; the colt was bought privately by Bell’s son Nick from pinhooker Robson Aguiar after the breeze-up sales were delayed in the spring. Sheikh Fahad came calling after The Lir Jet set a five-furlong track record when winning at Yarmouth on debut two days after racing in Britain resumed on June 3, and the colt carried Qatar Racing’s colours when beating Wesley Ward’s Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot. The Lir Jet, from the first crop of Ballyhane Stud’s fellow Norfolk winner Prince of Lir, was somewhat unlucky to be beaten when second in the G2 Prix Robert Papin on July 19 and the G1 Phoenix S. on Aug. 9, and according to Bell didn’t quite handle the Newmarket dip when fifth in the G1 Middle Park S. on Sept. 26. He steps up to a mile for the first time on Friday.

“He was a bit unlucky in the photograph in the Papin when it was heads up, heads down; the dice didn’t roll the right way for him because he was in front just before and just after the line,” Bell said. “He ran in Ireland in the Phoenix S. and stayed on very well but got slightly hampered and finished off very well over six furlongs. He ran at Newmarket and was a bit unbalanced coming down the hill, so this flatter track will suit him better. But he finished off his race very well over six, so we’re hopeful he’ll get the mile.”

“It would be a fantastic achievement,” Bell said of a potential Breeders’ Cup win. “It’s not going to be easy; we’re under no pretensions that he’s a warm-order favourite. We’re taking a punt at the trip, but if he does stay he’ll be in the mix because he has the class and he can certainly run to a higher rating over a mile if he stays. But we’ll only find that out on Friday.”

Royal Ascot Winner The Lir Jet To Step Up In Trip, Give Michael Bell First Breeders’ Cup Runner

Winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, The Lir Jet will be aimed at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland on Nov. 6, reports the Racing Post. The 2-year-old son of Prince of Lir has only competed over six furlongs this year, but trainer Michael Bell announced that connections plan to run him over the 1 1/16-mile trip at Keeneland due to his strong finish when fifth last out in the G1 Middle Park Stakes.

It will be Bell's first Breeders' Cup runner.

“In all his races his last furlong has been his best, which suggests he's worth a try over further,” Bell told racingpost.com. “His pedigree doesn't say he will definitely stay, but his style of racing suggests he might, especially going around a two-turn mile like they have at Keeneland.”

Owned by Qatar Racing Ltd., The Lir Jet is out of the Green Desert mare Paper Dreams. He was a $9,775 yearling at Goffs, and owns a record of two wins and two seconds from five starts for earnings of $116,914. Other top finishes this year include a second in the G2 Prix Robert Patin at Chantilly and a second in the G1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh.

Profitable Filly Tops Relocated Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale

The relocated Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale witnessed increases across the board, producing a solid final set of key indicators. A total of 203 horses sold for 2,341,350 guineas (US$3,236,736) (+81%) at an average of 11,533 guineas (US$15,943) (+13%) with a median of 8,000 guineas (US$11,059) (+5%).

Lot 135, a filly by Profitable, consigned by Derek Veitch's Ringfort Stud topped the day's trade when selling to Kevin Ross for 58,000 guineas (US$80,184). The filly's page received a notable boost as her second dam Dancing Prize is the grandam of Minzaal, this year's Gimcrack Stakes winner for Owen Burrows.

Lot 225, a colt consigned by Norris Bloodstock, the first crop from Arlington Million winner Mondialiste attracted interest from a number of parties but it was Aidan O'Ryan and Richard Fahey who came out on top securing the colt for 47,000 guineas (US$64,976).

Ringfort Stud also offered Lot 143 an El Kabeir half-sister to this year's Lowther Stakes winner and Ascot Yearling Sale graduate Miss Amulet. The filly caught the imagination of a number of bidders but it was Nick Bell who struck the winning bid of 45,000 guineas (US$62,211) on behalf of his father Michael.

Joe Foley was responsible for purchasing the fourth highest priced lot of the day when signing for Lot 93, a filly offered by Houghton Bloodstock by sire sensation Night of Thunder. Houghton Bloodstock ended the day as leading consignors selling a total of nine lots for 161,000 guineas (US$222,569) at an average of 17,889 guineas (US$24,730).

Peter and Ross Doyle were the leading purchasers on the day securing a total of six lots for an aggregate of 150,000 guineas (US$207,364). Among these purchases was Lot 105, an Ardad filly consigned by Britton House Stud from the family of Sakhee's Secret.

At the conclusion of the sale, Matthew Prior, head of Tattersalls Ascot commented;

“We have witnessed robust trade throughout the day, and it is hugely pleasing to see gains made across the board. Vendors have noticeably increased the quality on offer and have been rewarded with both strong domestic and international participation. Our thanks go to Tattersalls for accommodating the relocated sale to its headquarters in Park Paddocks, along with Great British Racing International who have assisted in the promotion and airport transfers for those traveling from further afield. We look forward to charting the progress of this year's graduates from a sale that goes from strength to strength.”

Demand Remains Strong For Form Horses

NEWMARKET, UK—The concept of a horses-in-training sale in August had already been welcomed and the initial response to the new three-day Tattersalls fixture seemed solid enough on Monday as, once again, a decent clearance rate of 84% was the most promising statistic of the day.

With 200 horses put through the ring, 167 found new homes, bringing a first-day aggregate of 1,871,800gns. This is not the level of trade once normally associates with the higher-profile Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale, but it served a purpose and once again fed a consistently voracious international appetite for bloodstock from this part of the world. The day’s average was 11,208gns and median 6,000gns.

Even with restrictions in place, an array of buyers was able to assemble at Park Paddocks, but technology is playing an increasingly important role in bloodstock sales this year and the winning bid for the top-priced lot of the day came via Tattersalls’ live internet bidding platform from Bahrain.

Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa of Al Adiyat Racing is now the proud new owner of The Queen’s homebred Cloud Drift (GB) (Toronado {Ire}), who will depart Michael Bell’s Fitzroy House Stables to be aimed at an appearance on Bahrain’s big race day.

“I am excited to have purchased the horse with the target of running in a valuable 0-100 handicap over a mile on Bahrain International Cup day, a meeting which also features the £500,000 Bahrain International,” reported the sheikh after buying lot 188 for 75,000gns.

Bred by The Queen from the four-time winner Humdrum (GB) (Dr Fong), the 3-year-old Cloud Drift has won once in each of his two seasons of racing and was sold with a rating of 89.

Cloud Drift’s former trainer Michael Bell is a fan of timing of the new sale. He said, “I hope it stays. The July Sale can come up quite quickly in the season. The timing in August allows us to run horses at the summer festivals—Royal Ascot, July meeting, Goodwood—and then sell ahead of the yearling sales, which helps owners know where their finances are if they wish to reinvest.”

Another of the day’s top lots to be heading to the Middle East is Soldierpoy (GB) (lot 96). The 2-year-old son of Sepoy (Aus) who was bought for 67,000gns by Will Douglass for Qatar-based Injaaz Stud.

“This horse has rock-solid form,” said Douglass of the 79-rated gelding who has been in the first three in all three of his starts for in-form trainer Tom Clover, including winning a Thirsk novice race and finishing third to Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) in the valuable Weatherbys Super Sprint. “The trainer has done a good job with him. He’s strong and sound, and should do a job for us.”

He added, “We tried to buy him a month ago and Happy Romance has won again since then. This is a great time of year to have a sale of this type. It suits everyone buying for an overseas market. At present [in the Middle East] they are not racing because it is high summer, so we buy them, and then ship them over which gives them time to acclimatise before they restart racing in September. The July Sale which is a very good sale, but this suits us better and I hope they keep it.”

One of a small number of mares in the sale, Mzyoon (Ire), an unraced Galileo (Ire) half-sister to crack sprinter Society Rock (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), was sold with a colt foal at foot by Exceed And Excel (Aus) for 58,000gns.

Bidding on behalf of Sheikh Sabah Al Sabah of Kuwait, Peter Harper signed the ticket for the 7-year-old mare, who was offered by the Castlebridge Consignment.

He said, “As a mare by Galileo she was hugely appealing. She will go to Derek Iceton at Tara Stud where all of the Sheikh’s mares board. We think she was value at that price. We will decide on plans for this foal, who will likely be sold as a yearling.”

The mare’s new owner has been represented on the racecourse this season by juvenile filly The Flying Ginger (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}), who won on debut earlier this month for trainer Roger Fell.

Continuing the international theme of buyers for the day’s more expensive offerings, Dr Johnny Hon stepped in to buy lot 162, Sir Oliver (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), for 50,000gns. The brother to Group 1-winning sprinter Mecca’s Angel (Ire) was bought for the owner from Richard Hughes’s Weathercock Stables by Tim Hide.

“We will get him home and give him a bit of a break before getting him back in for an all-weather campaign,” said Hide. “He looks a fast horse, he has a very fast sister, and he should be better in time as a 4-year-old.”

Trade resumes at Park Paddocks at 10am on Tuesday.
