Frankel Colt Has Measure Of His Rivals In Al Rashidiya

The bred-in-the-purple Measured Time (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Minidress {GB}, by Street Cry {Ire}) gave the boys in blue their eighth AED850,000 G2 Al Rashidiya winner when drawing off to win by 3 1/4 lengths in the 1800-metre grass contest on Friday.  One of two group races on the nine-race Meydan card, the Al Rashidiya featured 10 rivals for the lightly raced 3-year-old, who was receiving a break in the weights.

Part of the early pace discussion, the near-black colt was keen and tugging as he tracked Wirko (Ger) (Kingman {GB}) down the backstretch. Buick finally had him relaxed next to Goemon (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), and that duo moved up to challenge Wirko on the far turn. Those two went on with it with 550 metres to travel, with Measured Time edging ahead before storming home a 3 1/4-length victor. Erzindjan (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) closed up the inside to run second, 3/4 of a length ahead of Godolphin's Ottoman Fleet (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

“He's a horse full of promise and it's great to have a winner here on the first night,” said Buick. “Today was a new test for him; first time away from England; first time at Meydan. I still think he's a horse full of potential.”

Flawless in his first three starts for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin at Kempton in February and August, and at Newmarket on Aug. 25, Measured Time lost his unbeaten tag with a second-place finish in the Listed Floodlit S. back on the Kempton all-weather on Nov. 6.

Pedigree Notes

Measured Time became the 135th stakes winner and 92nd group winner for his Juddmonte sire with his score on Friday. Other Frankels to excel in the desert include G1 Jebel Hatta winner Dream Castle (GB), who also won the Al Rashidiya; and With The Moonlight (Ire).

The much-missed Street Cry (Ire)'s daughters have foaled 150 stakes winners to date, with this colt his 83rd Pattern race winner. His Minidress (GB), second in the Listed Height Of Fashion S., is the dam of UAE top-notcher Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a winner of the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin, and G1 Preis von Europa; and the stakes-placed Petticoat (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). Her latest is a weanling colt by Dubawi (Ire).

A grandson of G3 Musidora S. and G3 St. Simon S. victress and G1 Oaks placegetter Short Skirt (GB) (Diktat {GB}), Measured Time is also kin to Group 1 winners Asakusa Den'En (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) and Victoire Pisa (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}), as well as their dam, the multiple graded winner Whitewater Affair (GB) (Machiavellian), who was second in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks and third in the G1 Irish St Leger. Young sire Cappella Sansevero (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), a winner of the G3 Round Tower S. and third in the G1 Phoenix S., is also part of this clan.

Star Guitar Filly Plays A Merry Tune At Meydan

3rd-Meydan, AED210,000, Cond., 12-22, 1400m, 1:24.64, ft.
MANAMA GOLD (f, 2, Star Guitar–Charged Cotton, by Dehere), who attracted plenty of hype prior to this first start, ran to her billing and emerged a 2 1/2 length winner at Meydan. Kept off the fence as Frost At Dawn (Frosted) made the running, the Louisiana-bred was keen to go on rounding the bend and Adrie de Vries had his hands full keeping her content. She tackled the leader at the head of the straight, and ground determinedly past her 250 metres from home, before going on to win a shade cozily. It was the second win on the card for de Vries. “This is a bit what I expected,” said the winning jockey. “She trialled really well; trained on from then, got more professional and she's a very clever filly. She was having a nice look at the winning post. I always like it when a horse is having a look around, it often means there's a bit left in the tank.” Originally sold for $100,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, the chestnut caught the eye of Oliver St Lawrence after breezing a furlong in :10 1/5, and was knocked down for $200,000 out of the OBS April Sale. Charged Cotton, who won the All Brandy S. at Laurel, has already foaled the stakes-placed Sethamee Street (Street Sense), and multiple stakes winner Ova Charged (Star Guitar), who was second in the GIII Victory Ride S. at Belmont Park. Her latest is a weanling filly by Not This Time. Sales history: $100,000 Ylg '22 KEESEP; and $200,000 2yo '23 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, AED126,000. Click for the ERA chart & video.

Inaugural Festive Friday Draws International Cast At Meydan

Friday marks the first edition of the Festive Friday card at Meydan, featuring two group races, three listed races and AED4.5 million in prize-money across the nine-race stand.

Returning to the scene of his 2023 G2 Godolphin Mile victory is Isolate (Mark Valeski), who will step out in the AED1-million G2 Al Maktoum Mile for trainer Doug Watson. Tyler Gaffalione will fly in for the race from the States.

“That was a great day and he's moving better this year than he did last year,” said trainer Doug Watson, who also runs Golden Goal (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), winner of this race in 2022. “They do a nice job out at Sheikh Rashid [Bin Humaid, owner]'s farm and he had a good summer off and came back looking a million dollars.

“We've worked him a few times over at Meydan–he loves going over there. There might be Saudi [Cup meeting] plans but we'll see how he runs here first.”

Royal Mews (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) is one of nine rivals signed on, and he will be ridden by Tadhg O'Shea.

“We're really looking forward to having Royal Mews back,” said Ryan Tongue, Racing Manager for owners Deva Racing of the three-time winner. “Isolate is the one to beat, but Tadhg O'Shea worked Royal Mews last week in blinkers for the first time and apparently he worked very well.”

Already in action this season is Road Bloc (Street Sense), who was third in a 1200-metre race at Sharjah on Nov. 26.

“He needed his first run and he's working very well at home,” said owner Sayed Hashish. “The draw is not ideal but we believe he will appreciate the distance.”

Godolphin & Shadwell Out In Force In Al Rashidiya

Seven of the 11 entrants of the G2 Al Rashidiya will bear either the royal blue of Godolphin or the blue with white epaulettes of Shadwell. Charlie Appleby sends out Measured Time (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Ottoman Fleet (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), and Highland Avenue (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), and he is gunning for his fourth title in five years in the 1800-metre grass affair.

Not to be outdone, is fellow Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor, who is already a six-time winner of this race. His Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a multiple group winner who was placed twice at Group 1 level last year, will break from stall seven.

G1 Jebel Hatta hero Alfareeq (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) is one of three in the race for Shadwell, and holds pride of place, as he is the chosen mount of retained jockey Jim Crowley. The duo will leave from stall two.

Friday's Supporting Card High On Class

A trio of listed races anchor the supporting card, among them the AED500,000 Listed Ertijaal Dubai Dash over the minimum trip of 1000 metres on grass. The youthful Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), a winner of the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2022, squares off with desert veterans Equilateral (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), and Miqyaas (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Johnny Murtagh sends the progressive 4-year-old filly Ladies Church (GB) (Churchill {Ire}) into the fray, as well. She ran second ot Miqyaas in the G2 Blue Point Sprint in February.

“Miqyaas is doing well,” said Abo Bakr El Hefnawy, assistant trainer to Rashed Bouresly. “He raced once on dirt to be ready for this race.”

This season's G1 Al Quoz Sprint winner Danyah (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) makes his return on Friday in the 1400-metre Listed Business Bay Challenge on grass. His task is not the easiest, as among his 15 foes is GI Summer S. victor Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby.

Rounding out the listed races is the Entisar S., conducted over 1900m on dirt. Bhupat Seemar saddles a pair of horses, including Western Symphony (Ire) (Shamardal) and Walk Of Stars (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

“Godolphin thought Walk Of Stars was good enough to run in the Epsom Derby as a 3-year-old so he is a very exciting horse to have,” said Seemar. “We're going to experiment with Western Symphony and try him over the 1900m. His pedigree suggests he has a chance of getting in, albeit he is a Shamardal, because there is a lot of stamina on the dam side.”

‘Botti International’ as Lucie Botti is Set to Have First Dubai Runner

In Newmarket the rain is pouring and the sun, if it still exists, is being defiantly reclusive. But just one small click on a Zoom link and suddenly there is a backdrop of endless blue sky, and in the foreground the smiling face of Lucie Botti, back in Dubai for her umpteenth winter and looking understandably pleased to have escaped the English weather.

Botti is of course married to Newmarket trainer Marco Botti, and for years their stable has had runners all over the world, but most often in Dubai for the Carnival. Now, with the rules changed to allow international participants throughout the racing season in Dubai, unsurprisingly the enterprising Bottis have been among the first to seize this opportunity, with Lucie Botti now licensed to train under her own name and at the helm of the stable's burgeoning dual presence in the UK and the UAE.

“I think that we are going to call this adventure Botti International,” she says, and in many respects that global outlook has been at the heart of the family's operation since she and Marco set up their own operation at Green Ridge Stables in Newmarket in 2006. Some years later, they built their own 100-box yard, Prestige Place, which remains their primary base.

Botti continues, “We have always had runners in Dubai since we set up and we are very privileged to own the yard in Newmarket. It was purpose-built and it's working really well. Now what we are able to offer to our clients is to have horses trained here too. Again we are lucky to have some locally-based owners who want to have horses in Dubai in the winter, and we can also offer them the opportunity to have horses with us in the UK.

“We hope this new set-up will be a base for the Middle East in general, so we can run horses from here in Saudi, Bahrain, etc. Hopefully we can expand slowly and have a nice setting here for the winter. From a horse's point of view this time of the year is the best out here.”

Soneva became the first winner for the Botti team in Dubai in the G3 Cape Verdi in 2010, but Lucie Botti's association with the emirate stretches back further, some 20 years or more, to the days of Endless Hall (GB), who was fourth in the Dubai Sheema Classic, when it was still a Group 2, in 2001.

“When I first came to England I worked for Luca Cumani and I accompanied the first horse that he sent to Dubai, Endless Hall,” says the Czech-born former jockey. “After the Sheema Classic he went to Singapore and won the Singapore Cup.

“Later I worked for David Loder as one of his assistants for a couple of seasons and was still going to Dubai in the winter with the International horses.

“When we set up training we had runners in Dubai as soon as we could. Soneva was our first winner here, and I've been every year.”

The stable's success during that time has included victory for Jakkalberry (Ire) in the G2 City of Gold. He was also third in the Sheema Classic, while Euro Charline (GB) was runner-up in both the G1 Dubai Turf and G2 Balanchine, and Planteur (Ire) was third in the G1 Dubai World Cup. Felix (GB), too, has been placed in the Dubai Turf, while Lazzam (GB) was runner-up in the UAE 2,000 Guineas. And the international roll call has not been restricted to Dubai, for Marco Botti has trained group/graded winners in America, Canada, France, Germany, and of course his native Italy as well.

While Lucie Botti, as familiar with Meydan as she is with Newmarket Heath, stresses that it's very much business as usual, she does admit that next week will see two major landmarks for her personally. On December 20 she graduates in anthroposophic psychology. The following day she is set to have a first runner in her own name, the two-year-old Onigiri (GB) (Expert Eye {GB}), who is owned by Ahmed Bintouq and partner.

“It has always been in our mind and now obviously racing in the Middle East has really expanded over the last few years, which is great,” she says. “Dubai has always been a second home for us, so to have a base here was always a dream in my mind, and now that they have opened the season, that was the key. We can run at the other racecourses and in all the races at Meydan, and that is what has prompted us to make this decision this year. We are going to keep the base running all year round. If they are suitable horses to go back to the UK they will, and if they are suitable horses to go somewhere else, they can go there, or stay in Dubai for the summer.”

In addition to Onigiri, Botti also has another juvenile, the Patrick Doyle-owned Drink Dry (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), and Saeed Sultan Al Rahoomi's Royal Dubai (Fr) (Seahenge) under her care at the moment, and she is assisted by a local rider and a groom.

“The other two are set to run on 5 January. It's all building up and going fine so far,” she says. “We have another couple of horses arriving on 20 December and then Giavellotto will come out at the beginning of February.”

Scuderia La Tesa's homebred Giavellotto (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) currently holds stable-star status in the Botti yard. The winner of the G2 Yorkshire Cup in May, he was also third in the G2 Lonsdale Cup and he will return to Dubai for another crack at the country's major staying contest, the G2 Dubai Gold Cup, in which he was ninth last season. His first intended start is a prep race in the Nad Al Sheba Trophy.

“The Emirates Racing Authority has been super helpful and the BHA has also been very good,” says Botti.”It's a huge privilege to be here in Dubai and at Meydan. Over the years here the racing has been very good to us and we are lucky to have clients supporting us.”
