Dubai Turf Next For Saffron Beach

Group 1 winner Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) is targeting the G1 Dubai Turf on Mar. 26. Trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam, the chestnut won both her starts at two, including the G3 Oh So Sharp S. She resumed last April with a second in the G3 Nell Gwyn S. and was runner-up to Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in the G1 1000 Guineas on May 2. Off the board in the G1 Oaks and G1 Falmouth S. in June and July, respectively, the Sangster family and J. Wigan colourbearer bounced back to take the G3 Atalanta S. at Sandown on Aug. 21. Her latest effort was a win going a mile in the G1 Sun Chariot S. on Oct. 2.

“She had eight weeks out at grass since her last run and she started trotting back yesterday with a view to getting her ready for the Dubai Turf,” said Chapple-Hyam. “I discussed things with the owners over the last few weeks. It is a very hard programme for the 4-year-olds early on and this seemed a good option before looking at some of the mile races back in the UK and other options abroad.”

She added, “We don't know if she will take to the travelling until you try it but I think she will as she has matured and grown up a lot. The track should be perfect for her. Her only time going left-handed around a turn at Epsom was a disaster but a line can be put through that run.

“Although it was going the other way when she won at Sandown it was achieved going around a turn. She should be fine as she is a well-balanced filly.”

Like Father, Like Son at Meydan

The late Arrogate (Unbridled's Song) turned in arguably the most impressive effort in a G1 Dubai World Cup by a horse not named Dubai Millennium (GB), dropping back to last after being roughed up at the break, rallying wide on the turn and galloping past none other than Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) to win the 2017 renewal in jaw-dropping fashion. Taking Names became the first starter in Dubai for his GI Breeders' Cup Classic-winning stallion in Thursday's second race at Meydan, and while much more straight-forward, was similarly impressive in dotting up by an impressive 8 1/4 lengths on debut. He becomes the first 'TDN Rising Star' for Arrogate and his eighth winner overall

Ridden forward from gate four by Pat Dobbs, the Sheikh Obaid colourbearer argued the pace inside of Summer Is Tomorrow (Summer Front) for the opening three furlongs and held that spot at the fence as the field rounded the turn. Allowed to stride into the lead with 500 metres to race, Taking Names kicked in upper stretch, was a touch tardy switching his leads and scampered home under hands and heels riding to score by daylight.

“He was very good out of the gates,” Dobbs told Tom Stanley before weighing out. “He's bred to stay and he's got to the line very good. Very pleased. My lad's pretty fit. Shane Ryan has done a great job with him in the gates. Every time he goes in, he's getting better and he's getting more mature. This lad was very professional tonight and I'm delighted the way he's going.”

A $100,000 Keeneland September yearling acquisition, Taking Names was hammered down for $150,000 at this year's OBS June Sale after breezing a quarter-mile in :21 3/5.  A half-brother to Mani Bhavan (Storm Boot), GISW, $267,000; Hear the Ghost (Ghostzapper), GSW, $382,762; and Closing Bell (Tapit), SW & GISP-US, $560,582, Taking Names is out of a winning half-sister to MSW/MGSP Turkappeal (Turkoman), the dam of GSW Pink Champagne (Awesome Again). Third dam Silken Doll, a half-sister to GISW turfer Turk Passer (Turkoman), was responsible for Sovereign Award-winning 2-year-old filly Silken Doll (Storm Cat), whose champion son Speightstown (Gone West) has become an influential sire at WinStar Farm. Silken Cat was also the dam of the late MGSW/GISP Irap (Tiznow) and of Cableknit (Unbridled's Song), dam of G1 Maktoum Challenge R3 winner Capezzano (Bernardini).

Rehear is the dam of a yearling Honor Code Filly, a weanling colt by West Coast and was most recently bred to The Factor.

New Incentives Announced For 2022 Dubai World Cup Carnival

A range of new incentives have been unveiled for the 2022 Dubai World Cup Carnival, which gets underway on Jan. 13.

Dubai Racing Club is pleased to be able to offer new benefits for trainers and owners sending horses to Dubai to compete in the 2022 Dubai World Cup Carnival, for which the total prizemoney exceeds $7.5 million. These include two return Business Class flights for trainers, in addition to three nights' accommodation at a DRC-associated hotel. Owners (one representative) will receive one Business Class return flight to use during the Carnival.

Dubai Racing Club will also subsidize travel for stable staff, with one Economy Class return flight provided for one groom for up to two horses, flights for two people for three to four horses, and so on. Accommodation for grooms is provided within the International and Dubai World Cup Quarantine complex, adjacent to Meydan Racecourse.

There is no cost to connections for stabling or use of Meydan Racecourse's extensive training facilities. The separate training track complex, which has turf and Tapeta tracks, will shortly be upgraded to maintain the safety of horses and riders. This is part of a plan by Dubai Racing Club to develop all facilities in preparation for the Carnival and Dubai World Cup meetings.

The 2022 Dubai World Cup Carnival commences on Thursday 13th January and runs until Super Saturday on March 5th, while the $30.5 million Dubai World Cup meeting takes place on Saturday, March 26. Several new races have been announced for the forthcoming running of the Carnival; the 19th edition. These include the 'Jumeirah Turf Series', for 3-year-olds, featuring the $200,000 Jumeirah Derby on Feb. 24, and the $300,000 Ras Al Khor, over seven furlongs on turf, on Super Saturday.

Stephanie Cooley, DRC International Liaison, is looking forward to welcoming overseas horses owners, trainers and jockeys back to Meydan Racecourse.

“I'm delighted with what we're able to offer this year as extra incentives for international horsemen,” she commented. “Maintaining relationships with these owners and trainers is a key priority; they are integral to putting on our highly regarded Carnival. Last season was a challenging time due to worldwide restrictions on travel, so we were delighted to celebrate winners from Europe, South America and closer to home in the Middle East.

“The fact that we can introduce more prize money and incentives for 2022 can only boost the continuous support from our horsemen as well as bringing new players to Dubai.”

New Jumeirah Series on Turf Added to Dubai World Cup Carnival

Following the announcement last week of a purse increase to $30.5 million for Dubai World Cup night, a new four-race Jumeirah Series on turf for the Classic generation at the Dubai World Cup Carnival was revealed on Thursday. In addition, a new race has been added to the Mar. 5 Super Saturday card-the $300,000 Ras Al Khor over 1400 metres on grass.

Sheikh Rashid bin Dalmook, Chairman of Dubai Racing Club, said, “The introduction of new races within the framework of the Dubai World Cup Carnival is part of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's effort to continually improve Dubai's equestrian offering and support racing both within the UAE and overseas. Fourteen-hundred metres, or seven furlongs, is one of the most popular distances in thoroughbred racing yet has very few high valued feature events run over the trip. We believe the Ras Al Khor will eventually become a global fixture that will be promoted to our Dubai World Cup meeting.”

The DWCC, which begins on Jan. 13, will also feature enhanced purses for the sophomore open dirt Classic races.

Sheikh Rashid bin Dalmook, added, “Moreover, the Classic generation are well catered for on both turf and dirt in the upcoming season. Longstanding 3-year-old dirt events such as the UAE 2000 Guineas, Al Bastikaya and UAE Derby have all been given prizemoney increases. We have also introduced the Jumeirah Series of turf races which is a significant addition to the program. The series features the US$150,000 Jumeirah Classic Trial over 1400m, the US$75,000 Jumeirah Derby Trial over 1800m, the US$150,000 Jumeirah Classic over 1600m and the US$200,000 Jumeirah Derby over 2000m.”

As previously announced, during Dubai World Cup week the Dubai World Cup Breeze-Up Sale in association with Goffs will be held for the first time. All Dubai World Cup night races will also boast prizemoney of at least $1 million, the G1 Longines Sheema Classic will now be worth $6 million; the G1 Dubai Turf will be run for $5 million; and the G1 Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates Airline, will offer $12 million in prizemoney.
