‘Soldiering’ On

'Victorious' in the 2021 G1 Al Maktoum Challenge R3 ahead of a fifth-place effort behind Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper) in the G1 Dubai World Cup, 8-year-old Salute the Soldier (Ger) (Sepoy {Aus}) sat a four-wide trip while punching the breeze and showed his superiour late stamina to best a game Bendoog (Gun Runner) in the $450,000 2023 edition sponsored By Emirates Airline Saturday evening at Meydan Racecourse to earn a return ticket to the $12-million feature in three weeks' time.

The veteran galloper, a disappointing fifth behind World Cup market leader Algiers (Ire) (Shamardal) and Bendoog in Round 2 of the challenge Feb. 3, was a half-step slow from a wide barrier but mustered some speed and was in fifth position as First Constitution (Chi) (Constitution) showed the way into the first corner. Steered out into about the four path with about 1300 metres to traverse, Salute the Soldier always traveled sweetly for Adrie de Vries just off the flank of Bendoog. He appeared to be going well as the field neared the straight, claimed First Constitution with three-sixteenths of a mile and went for home. But Salute the Soldier, who always figured the better stayer between the two, struck to the lead 150 metres out and went on to score by a comfortable margin. First Constitution held for third ahead of Law of Peace (GB) (Shamardal), who ran on for fourth while no menace to the winner. Salute the Soldier was completing a race-to-race double for his owner and trainer, who took out the Listed Al Bastakiya S. for the 3-year-olds one race previously.

“He lost form last year for some reason, but there was some optimism this year. We know he's got the ability,” said winning trainer Fawzi Nass, who would not fully commit to a start in the World Cup.

Added de Vries, “We went fast and I was happy with my draw on the outside. I followed James [Doyle, on Bendoog] as he had, in my opinion, the horse to beat. I gave him a nice breather on the turn and it took him a while to pick up, but he seems to have a lot more stamina now and he made it look easy at the end.”

Pedigree Notes

Salute the Soldier is the product of a G1 Golden Slipper S.-winning sire raced by Godolphin, who finished well down the field behind the Fawzi Nass-trained Krypton Factor (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) in the 2012 G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen. Dam sire Street Cry (Ire) needs little introduction, as he won this race–when contested at Group 2 level in 2002–and doubled up with a towering 4 1/4-length tally in the big race.

Street Fire is also the dam of the 3-year-old filly Fox Flame (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}), the 2-year-old filly Smouldering (Ire) (Profitable {GB}) and a yearling filly by Profitable.

Discovery Island Back To His Best In Burj Nahar At Meydan

Discovery Island (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) bounced back to his best on Super Saturday at Meydan by finishing with a flourish under James Doyle to take the $250,000 G3 Burj Nahaar Sponsored By Emirates Skywards.

In doing so, Discovery Island ensured his place in the G2 Godolphin Mile on World Cup night for trainer Bhupat Seemar, who ran four horses in Saturday's race.

But it was Discovery Island who did best for the stable. On The Warpath (GB) (Declaration Of War) got to the lead early but couldn't sustain it and Discovery Island, who benefited from a typically-cool Doyle ride, delivered a winning challenge inside the last furlong to win going away at the line by 1 1/2 lengths.

Seemar said, “He's a very talented horse and, to be honest, we were thinking of running him in the Group 1–the Al Maktoum Challenge–because he stays well. Connections, I think they were right, because they had two horses and they kept Bendoog (Gun Runner) for the other race.”

The trainer added, “He just makes it hard for himself–he's a little bit slow out of the gate and, with a big field he gets kickback, but James gave him a great ride and moved him out and he finished.”

Discovery Island led home a one-three in the race for Seemar, with Royal Mews (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) a half-length back in third behind Raaeb (Ire) (Raven's Pass).

Second to the progressive multiple group winner Algiers (Ire) (Shamarda) in the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 on Jan. 6, the opening card of the Dubai World Cup Carnival, the bay was sixth in the G3 Firebreak S. to Prince Eiji (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was scratched out of this race.

Pedigree Notes

Stakes winner 251 for his sire, Discovery Island is the first foal out of listed winner Sperry (Ire) (Shamardal). A half-sister to multiple listed winner Dunelight (Ire) (Desert Sun {GB}), she foaled a sophomore colt by Kingman (GB) named Theatre Honours (GB), and has a Too Darn Hot (GB) juvenile colt still to come. Third dam Miss Gris (Hail The Pirates) was named a champion in Italy at two and three, and won both the Italian 1000 Guineas and Italian Oaks when they were both Group 1 races.

Dubai Breeze-Up Catalogue Revealed By Goffs

A 73-strong catalogue of 2-year-olds for the Goffs Dubai Breeze-Up Sale on Mar. 21 is now online.

Slated for 5 p.m. in the Meydan Racecourse Parade Ring, the sale's breezes will take place the day prior at the Dubai Racing Club Training Track at 7:45 a.m. on Monday, Mar. 20. Held for the first time in 2022, the inaugural sale has already produced 13 individual winners in five countries and there are also several group-placed horses. Among the best graduates is the winner Labeling (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is also Group 1-placed in Japan, as well as the winning Mr Raj (Bolt d'Oro), who ran third in the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas earlier this month.

Sheikh Rashid bin Dalmook Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Racing Club, said, “We are delighted to welcome buyers, consigners, and bloodstock agents to the first renewal of the Dubai Breeze-Up Sale, held in association with Goffs after a very successful inaugural auction in 2022. The catalogue contains carefully selected specialist horses that serve the underlying vision of this unique sale in the region.

“Thanks to the leadership and vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, we aim to be the best at what we do.

“We always believed that the Dubai Breeze-Up Sale offers potential buyers a unique opportunity to purchase young horses sourced from various farms and bloodstock sales worldwide based on studies of their attributes and pedigrees and with varieties that meet various needs and expectations. It offers potential buyers from the region select runners that save them the hassles of travelling and shopping around and offers them select runners at competitive prices in a venue so close to numerous vibrant racing centres.

“The catalogue features outstandingly bred individuals; many of whom are by some of the world's leading stallions and are related to horses who thrived in this region. This bunch of young horses feature great conformation and soundness. They have undergone basic training and are ready to pay back prospective buyers.”

The 2023 catalogue includes individuals by established sires like American Pharoah, Constitution, Curlin, Ghostzapper, Hard Spun, Gun Runner, Into Mischief, Justify, Kingman (GB), Medaglia d'Oro, No Nay Never, Not This Time, Sea The Stars (Ire), Speightsown, Tapit, War Front, Zoustar (Aus), and Yoshida (Jpn), as well as exciting first-season sires such as Masar (Ire), Too Darn Hot (GB) and Ten Sovereigns (Ire).

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby added, “The Dubai Breeze Up Sale in association with Goffs achieved some of the strongest results of any breeze-up sale in 2022.

“Buoyed by the success of year one, the breeze-up consignors went to the world's leading yearling sales with this year's Dubai Breeze-Up firmly in their sights and our selection team led by Tom Taaffe and Nick Nugent has worked with them to compile a catalogue of unrivalled quality that will appeal to all Middle Eastern and international buyers attending the Dubai World Cup.

“It is an honour for Goffs to conduct the Dubai Breeze Up on behalf of the Dubai Racing Club and I wish to extend my thanks once again for the trust placed in the Goffs service by HH Sheikh Rashid bin Dalmook Al Maktoum and his team whilst we salute the vison of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in adding this sale to the iconic Dubai World Cup Meeting.”

Teofilo’s Nations Pride Too Strong In The Dubai Millennium

Reappearing for the first time since his fifth in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, last year's GI Saratoga Derby Invitational and GIII Jockey Club Derby Invitational winner Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) got his 2023 campaign off to a flyer with a comfortable success in Friday's G3 Dubai Millennium S. at Meydan. The pick of William Buick of the Charlie Appleby duo and marginally the second favourite at 11-8 behind stablemate Ottoman Fleet (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the homebred travelled notably strongly behind the leading pair throughout the early stages. Rolling to the front 300 metres from the finish, he was pushed out to score by 1 1/4 lengths from Zagrey (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) as Ottoman Fleet faded late to be a further half length away in third.

Nations Pride has not raced in his native England since finishing eighth in the Derby, his sole blip having come after earning a supplementary for the Blue Riband when beating Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}) by seven lengths in the Listed Newmarket S. in April. Highly effective at or around this 10-furlong trip on a conventional track, he is now the winner of this venue's inaugural Jumeirah Derby, the aforementioned Saratoga Derby Invitational and Jockey Club Derby Invitational as well as being a possibly unfortunate runner-up in the GI Belmont Derby Invitational.
Appleby, who was winning this race for the sixth consecutive year, is considering the G1 Jebel Hatta and G1 Dubai Turf. “Immediately, you'd say have a crack at the Dubai Turf, as they'll go a good gallop over the 1800 metres there, but we'll see how the cards fall,” he said.

Pedigree Notes

The dam Important Time (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who was a listed winner in Germany, is a daughter of the G1 Prix de l'Opera heroine Satwa Queen (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}) who is herself kin to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Spadoun (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}). Satwa Queen is also the second dam of the G1 Phoenix S. hero and G1 2000 Guineas, G1 St James's Palace S. and G1 Middle Park S.-placed Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). Also related to the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Marieta (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), she has a 2-year-old filly by Dark Angel (Ire) and a yearling full-sister to the winner to come.
