Gun Runner Colt Lights Up Meydan

4th-Meydan, AED175,000, Cond., NH & SH 3yo, 1900m, 1:58.65, ft.
GUNS AND GLORY (c, 3, Gun Runner–Baby Go Far {Brz} {G1SP-Brz}, by Elusive Quality) dominated from the front end at Meydan in his third start on Friday. Once the gates flew, Tadhg O'Shea drove his mount to the front and the duo set a decent pace past the grandstand and into the backstretch. In a very easy rhythm, Guns And Glory set sail for home at the 500-metre mark, and his rivals had no answer, with the bay drawing off to win by 12 lengths in an impressive fashion. Elyabri (American Pharoah) closed to take second, a neck to the good of Fayadh (Liam's Map). “His rider [Jennifer Ferguson] fell off him yesterday and has a broken leg, because he's a bit of a handful and spends a lot of time on his hind legs,” said O'Shea. “I said to [owner] Dr Hay, I thought he'd win the first time, but he needed that run and then was disappointing last time. At the start of the season, I thought he was a UAE Derby horse and I'm sure if the invitation comes they'd love to take it up.” Hay added, “He was a bit babyish last time, but tonight he's shown that he's come on a ton. I think with a performance like that he deserves a run [in the Derby.]” Picked up for $160,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale before making €543,210 from Stephen Hillen/Dr. Hay to top the Goffs Dubai Breeze-Up Sale last March, the colt was fourth to Military Artist (Munnings) when unveiled on Dec. 1, and improved a spot to third upped from 1600 metres to this track and trip behind Elyabri on Feb. 2. His dam was placed at Group 1 level in Brazil, and she foaled a full-sister to the winner in 2022. Her latest is a Justify yearling filly, and she was covered by Epicenter last spring. Baby Go Far is a daughter of G1 Grande Premio Marciano de Aguiar Moreira heroine Linda Rafaela (Brz) (Bin Ajwaad {Ire}), and a half-sister to G1 Brazilian Oaks winner Viva Rafaela (Brz) (Know Heights {Ire}). Sales history: $160,000 Ylg '22 KEESEP; €543,210 2yo '23 GOFMAR. Lifetime Record: 3-1-0-1, AED131,250. Click for the ERA chart and video.

Frosted Filly Skates Home A Winner In Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint

Rabbah Bloodstock's FROST AT DAWN (Frosted-Hawana, by War Front) has had the misfortune of squaring off with two of the best fillies in this jurisdiction multiple times–the undefeated pair of G3 UAE Oaks heroine Manama Gold (Star Guitar) on dirt, and Saturday's listed winner Cinderella's Dream (GB) (Shamardal). However, she finally got her chance in the spotlight trying the 1000-metre AED1,200,000 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint Sponsored By Emirates Skywards, and the William Knight trainee walked away with a Group 3 win over Godolphin's Star Of Mystery (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) by 2 1/2 lengths.

One of the early pacesetters in this straight-course test, Frost At Dawn avoided the majority of the field while glued to the far rail. Shrugging off all challengers, she scampered home a good-looking winner, with fellow filly Star Of Mystery emerging from the field to take second. Logo Hunter (Ire) (Brazen Beau {Aus}), who was toting 12 more pounds than his sophomore challengers, was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third. Frost At Dawn is now the 26th stakes winner and ninth group/graded winner for her Darley sire. Her victory has punched a ticket in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint, where she will be required to go up in trip to 1200 metres at the end of the month.

“I had the luck to have a good draw today, so I just played my card,” said Barzalona after breaking the track record in a time of 55:41. “It's the first time I've ridden her. She's fast and I think she would travel even better over six furlongs [1200metres].”

She broke her maiden at second asking in England last November, but then has failed to win versus Manama Gold in December and January, or Cinderella's Dream in February. Tried in the Dubai Trophy, a conditions race over 1200 metres on grass on Feb. 9, the grey found only Great Truth (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) too good when a head back in second.

Pedigree Notes

One of two winners for her dam, who has a juvenile colt by Bernardini and a yearling filly by Nyquist to come, Frost At Dawn is related to Ocean Atlantique (American Pharoah), a stakes winner in both France and the US, who was third in the GI Turf Classic S., while noted Blushing Groom (GB)-line sire and American turf champion Leroidesanimaux (Brz) (Candy Stripes) is under the third dam. Hawana was bred to Maxfield last spring. Click for the ERA chart and video.

Godolphin’s Cinderella’s Dream Unphased By Tack Drama In Listed Jumeirah Guineas

CINDERELLA'S DREAM (GB) (f, 3, Shamardal–Espadrille {GB}, by Dubawi {Ire}) ran out a 5 1/2-length winner of the 1600-metre AED800,000 Listed Jumeirah 1000 Guineas, despite having her saddle slip approaching the far turn. Jockey William Buick kicked free of his irons and rode the rest of the race in what he described as a “bit of a rodeo show”, with the duo keeping straight and true to the line, despite being at least four wide off the fence. Godolphin claimed this contest last year when it was only a conditions race with subsequent G1 1000 Guineas heroine Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Geologist (GB) (Territories {Ire}) was second, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Yamamah (Ire) (Masar {Ire}). The final time for the race over good turf was 1:37.62.

From the bell, the eventual winner, and 169th stakes winner for her late sire, appeared a touch keen, but raced just off the leaders as Nadalia (Fr) (Spanish Moon) led. However, when the field entered the turn, the filly's saddle slipped, not once but twice, and the quick-thinking Buick steered her to the outside of her rivals just past half-way. Drawing even by the 700-metre mark, the dark bay responded to Buick's direction despite the unconventional tactics and they motored home to win as they pleased.

Already a winner at both Lingfield on debut in May and Thirsk in September, Cinderella's Dream defeated Charlie Appleby stablemate Beautiful Love (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the Jumeirah Fillies' Classic on Feb. 2.

Out of the dual winner Espadrille, Cinderella's Dream has a 2-year-old Farhh (GB) half-sister. Her second dam is the G3 St. Simon S. winner High Heeled (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), who was third in both the 2009 G1 Oaks and 2010 G1 Coronation Cup. This is also the extended family of crack distaffer Just The Judge (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), who won a brace of top-level races including the 2013 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas.

Senor Buscador’s Peacock Added Investor Before Saudi Cup, Two-Race Lease In Place Through Dubai World Cup

Just before the gate load in Saturday's G1 Saudi Cup at the King Abdulaziz Racecourse, if you were an American race fan scouring the circling field looking for the customary light blue and neon green standard carried by Joe Peacock Jr.'s homebred MGSW Senor Buscador (Mineshaft), then you might have been left wondering.

The banner wasn't there. That's because jockey Junior Alvarado was sporting royal blue and white aboard the eventual winner.

Despite reporting by several Middle Eastern news outlets–namely Arab News and the Saudi Gazette–which either listed Peacock secondarily as the owner, or in the case of latter, totally omitted his name, rest assured, said the San Antonio-based breeder and owner, he is still firmly in control.

“I think it was a misunderstanding and probably due to not fully comprehending the nature of the business agreement,” said Peacock, when he was reached by phone on Monday afternoon. “This is a two-race lease for a minority interest in Senor Buscador, and he is, and always will be ours.”

It is true that after Senor Buscador arrived for the Saudi Cup under the care of trainer Todd Fincher, Peacock did forge a racing license agreement just before the race on Friday with Saudi businessman Sharaf Mohammed S. Al-Hariri.

Peacock says that the terms pertain only to Senor Buscador's time in the Middle East and have nothing to do with breeding rights. The arrangement includes competing in the Saudi Cup and then the opportunity to run in next month's G1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse.

In exchange for an undisclosed amount, but one which Peacock confirmed was significant, Al-Hariri's stake is strictly based on the horse's winnings.

The other portion of the deal gave Al-Harari the right to have his silks borne by jockey Junior Alvarado in both races.

“I started to receive all kinds of offers for Buscador when we were invited to go to the Saudi Cup,” the owner explained. “The answer was always 'no thank you' but I understood how important it was to them over there to have their silks in the race, so I thought from a business standpoint, it would be good to mitigate our own risks, hedge our bets, and offer a short-term lease.

“I think Sharaf took a gamble, a major risk, and I applaud him for that effort. I am happy that it worked out for him.”

After the 6-year-old won on Saturday in Riyadh, there was confusion over why Peacock and his contingent were not allowed to take part in the official trophy presentation.

The owner and his supporters were denied access by the Royal Guard to the area where the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, conducted the ceremony. Al-Hariri instead received the Saudi Cup trophy.

“I was very disappointed,” admitted Peacock. “I told them I owned the horse, but it wasn't until later that they brought the trophies to us during the press conference. That is the way it goes.”

When asked about the news stories put out by the press in Saudi Arabia, he said, “I'm really over it and not going to spend time thinking about it because I know who we are and what it took to get our horse into this position.”

As of Monday morning, Senor Buscador arrived safe and sound in Dubai after he was joined by a contingent of other Saudi Cup card participants for the two-hour flight. The logistics were organized shortly after the invitation to come to Saudi Arabia was extended, according to Peacock.

Over the next month, Senor Buscador will be housed at Meydan with Fincher assistant Oscar Rojero, who traveled with the horse to Saudi Arabia. Regular workouts will take place, with Fincher making all of the decisions concerning the tab–just as he always does–added the owner.

Dubai World Cup Night is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 30 with Senor Buscador attempting to become the first dual winner of the Saudi Cup and Dubai World Cup.
