Champion Stayer and Top NH Sire Kayf Tara Dies

Kayf Tara (GB), who was three times crowned champion stayer on the Flat before forging a successful career as a National Hunt stallion, has died at Overbury Stud at the age of 28.

An announcement made by the Gloucestershire-based stud on Thursday stated that Kayf Tara “died peacefully in his paddock this morning following the routine he'd had since arriving at Overbury Stud”. He had been retired from covering duties in 2020 as his fertility waned.

Kayf Tara's first ever winner was noteworthy for being in the Listed Ballymacoll Stud S., a recognised Oaks trial, when Ruby Wine (GB) broke her maiden in that race for James Eustace and owner/breeder Rachel Wilson. However, it was in the world of jump racing that the son of Sadler's Wells really carved his reputation as a stallion, heading the sires' table in Britain a record 11 times.

His list of Grade 1 winners over fences and hurdles includes the King George hero and Horse of the Year Thistlecrack (GB), Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Special Tiara (GB), Edwulf (GB), Planet Of Sound (GB), Identity Thief (Ire), Tea For Two (GB), and the Overbury-bred Thyme Hill (GB). His current star performer and winner of last Saturday's G1 Tingle Creek Chase is Edwardstone (GB), bred by Robert Abrey and Ian Thurtle, and trained by Alan King to win nine of his 21 starts to date, including the G1 Arkle Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival.

A son of Colorspin (GB) (High Top {GB}) whose dam Reprocolor (GB) (Jimmy Reppin {GB}) was one of the outstanding foundation mares of the Weinfeld family's Meon Valley Stud, Kayf Tara was offered for sale by his breeder at the Tattersalls Houghton Sale of 1995, and was bought for 210,000gns by Darley Stud Management. He was sent into training initially with Sir Michael Stoute, who also trained his full-brother Opera House (GB) to win the G1 Coronation Cup, G1 Eclipse, and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. in the maroon-and-white colours of Sheikh Mohammed.

Having broken his maiden for Stoute as a 3-year-old at Ascot, Kayf Tara was later transferred to Godolphin and Saeed Bin Suroor. He became the pre-eminent stayer of his generation, twice winning the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the G1 Irish St Leger, as well as posting victories in the G2 Goodwood Cup, G2 Yorkshire Cup, G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier and G2 Prix Kergorlay.

Paying tribute to the first stallion he stood on taking up the reins at Overbury Stud in 2000, Simon Sweeting said, “This is a very sad day for all of us at Overbury. Kayf Tara really put us on the map and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been with him through every step of what transpired to be an extraordinary career as a jump stallion, in which he won more championships than any other British National Hunt sire in history.

“I remain immensely grateful to Sheikh Mohammed and the Darley team for entrusting him to us. He's been such a great servant to the National Hunt game and to Overbury Stud, where he was looked after for most of his time by Dan Matty. We will miss him terribly.”

Darley's director of stallions Sam Bullard added, “We are all very grateful to Simon Sweeting and his team at Overbury for taking such great care of Kayf Tara for all these years, and we are very proud of the enormous contribution he has made to National Hunt racing and breeding in Britain and beyond during that time.”

Territories’s Hoo Ya Mal Snags Career-High Win At Goodwood

Acquired by connections for £1.2-million at Goffs' London sale in June, former Andrew Balding-trained G1 Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}–Sensationally {GB}, by Montjeu {Ire}) celebrated a first victory in six starts since annexing York's Convivial Maiden last term with an impressive tally for trainer George Boughey in Saturday's G3 William Hill March S., staged in memory of John Dunlop, at Goodwood. The G1 St Leger, G1 Irish St Leger and G1 Melbourne Cup entry tanked forward to track the tempo in second after the initial exchanges of this 14-furlong marathon. Under wraps until shaken up soon after passing the two pole, the 3-10 favourite quickened to the fore approaching the final furlong and lengthened clear of Perfect Alibi (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) to defeat that pacesetting rival by 2 1/2 lengths in impressive fashion. Animato (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) finished 6 1/2 lengths further adrift in third.

“The thing we learned was he was stepping up to 14 furlongs, which defies his pedigree,” said George Boughey. “William [Buick] said he's a horse who doesn't feel like he'll stay, but then he does stay. He has that class edge and on ratings he was expected to win, but he didn't do a huge amount today. I just wanted to see him relax and hit the line. It was softer ground and a trip he'd never run over before, so William was delighted and it's good to have ticked a box. It's pretty late at night or early morning in Australia and I'll speak to Gai [Waterhouse] and Adrian [Bott] on the way home. We'll let the dust settle and the [G1 St] Leger is the logical step for him.”

Hoo Ya Mal becomes the second pattern-race winner for his sire (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the first for Sensationally (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}), who has six scorers from as many runners to her credit. His second dam, G1 Juddmonte International heroine One So Wonderful (GB) (Nashwan), produced GII San Diego H. victor Sun Boat (GB) (Machaivellian) and is also the second dam of the Group 3 victrix Four White Socks (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Hoo Ya Mal's third dam Someone Special (GB) (Habitat), herself kin to G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. heroine Milligram (GB) (Mill Reef), has four black-type winners of her own headed by G2 Dante S.-winning sire Alnasr Alwasheek (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and G3 Rockfel S. victrix Relatively Special (GB) Alzao). Someone Special is out of G1 1000 Guineas heroine One In A Million (Ire) (Rarity {GB}), whose descendants also include the dual Group 1-winning distaffer Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal). Sensationally has an unraced 2-year-old colt by Mukhadram (GB) and a weanling filly by Belardo (Ire) to come.

Anapurna to Visit Kingman

Classic heroine Anapurna (GB) (Frankel {GB}) will be covered by Juddmonte's Kingman (GB) in 2022, Meon Valley Stud confirmed to the TDN.

Bred by Meon Valley Stud and raced by Helena Springfield Ltd., the bay captured the G1 Investec Oaks in only her fourth start. She added the G1 Qatar Prix de Royallieu later in 2019 and was top of her division in France that year. The daughter of listed winner, G1 Yorkshire Oaks second and G1 Meon Valley Stud Mile third Dash To The Top (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) is currently in foal to Darley's Dubawi (Ire) on a Mar. 18 cover. A half-sister to the group-placed Dynasty (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and the stakes-placed Very Dashing (GB) (Dansili {GB}), her first foal is a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire).

This is the expended family of champion and two-time Group 1 winner Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal), while Milligram (GB) (Mill Reef), herself a Group 1 winner and dual Classic-placed, is Anapurna's third dam.

Lope De Vega Filly For Oaks Winner Anapurna

Meon Valley Stud's foaling season has got off to the best possible start with the arrival of the first foal for the 2019 Oaks winner Anapurna (GB). The daughter of Frankel (GB) produced a chestnut filly by Lope De Vega (Ire) at the Hampshire farm early on Monday morning.

“As you can imagine we're absolutely delighted,” said Meon Valley Stud owner Mark Weinfeld. “You never know what's going to happen, so to have a filly as her first foal is fantastic. She arrived at six o'clock this morning and she's a very nice first foal.”

A fifth generation homebred for the stud, Anapurna traces back to one of Meon Valley's three foundation mares, the 1979 1000 Guineas winner One In A Million (Ire) (Rarity {GB}). Trained by John Gosden, Anapurna became the first British Classic winner for Frankel at Epsom following her win in the Lingfield Oaks Trial. Later that season she won the G1 Qatar Prix de Royallieu on Arc weekend. The 5-year-old mare is booked to visit Dubawi (Ire) at Dalham Hall Stud this season.

Anapurna's foal is the first of 22 expected at Meon Valley Stud this season and the team will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of a full-sibling to the Classic heroine in March. Since delivering Anapurna, Dash To The Top (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) has not produced a foal in the intervening years but she is currently in foal to Frankel on a March 5 cover.

Weinfeld said, “We've had some tricky moments with Dash To The Top and we're just hoping she will go full term. She normally runs late so we are estimating that she will foal in the first week of March.”

While no decision has yet been reached for Dash To The Top's 2021 mating, a trip to Frankel is on the cards for dual Group 1 winner Izzi Top (GB) Pivotal {GB}), who is in foal to Invincible Spirit (Ire). Izzi Top's Group 2-winning half-sister Jazzi Top (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) is in foal to Dubawi and will visit Sea The Moon (Ger) at Lanwades Stud this year.

Oaks runner-up Shirocco Star (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}), the dam of G2 Dante S. winner and new Haras du Mesnil stallion Telecaster (GB) (New Approach {GB}), is currently in foal to Dubawi, with whom she has already produced the listed winner and Group 3 runner-up Al Suhail. She will visit Kingman (GB) next.

The first-season sires Kameko, Pinatubo (Ire) and Mohaather (GB) will each be sent a mare from Meon Valley Stud in 2021.
