Consumer Spending Bests Pizza Bianca at Aqueduct

Klaravich Stables' Consumer Spending (f, 3, More Than Ready-Siempre Mia, by Scat Daddy) defeated returning GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Pizza Bianca to win the Memories of Silver S. at Aqueduct Sunday to cap a spring meet where her connections won both leading trainer and owner titles.

Pizza Bianca, the 4-5 favorite, settled off a mild pace and Consumer Spending, at 7-1, sat just off the Breeders' Cup winner. Consumer Spending tracked as the favorite rolled up three wide on the far turn and engaged her rival while four wide into the stretch. The two fillies went toe to toe before Consumer Spending put Pizza Bianca away late and inched clear to a 3/4-length victory. Consumer Spending, a maiden winner over the Saratoga lawn last Sept. 6, punched her ticket to the Breeders' Cup with a win in the Oct. 2 Selima S. at Laurel. She was a close-up sixth behind Pizza Bianca at Del Mar last November in a blanket finish.

“This filly has really done well over the winter…Trainers will say it, but she really did do what you want to see from two-to-three, both physically and mentally, almost to the point I was almost surprised how much she improved,” said Chad Brown post-race. “I wasn't sure off the Breeders' Cup if she was the type to train on. I was torn between if she was a juvenile that got there early, or is she going to show some good quality down the road. It was pretty apparent from February that this filly was really going the right way and doing everything you need to do to have a nice career ahead of her. She certainly proved it today.”

Her dam's second foal, Consumer Spending has a winning older half-brother named Behavin Myself (Malibu Moon) and a 2-year-old half-brother by Empire Maker named Baba Voss as well as a yearling full-sister. The mare is expecting a 2022 foal by American Pharoah this season. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Bubbles On Ice Makes Impressive U.S. Debut In Memories Of Silver

Glen Hill Farm, Madaket Stables and Cheyenne Stables' Bubbles On Ice was victorious in her U.S. debut, edging Fluffy Socks by a head in Sunday's $100,000 Memories of Silver, a 1 1/16-mile inner turf test for sophomore fillies at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

Trained by Christophe Clement and expertly piloted by Hall of Famer Javier Castellano, the Irish-bred Starspangledbanner chestnut was exiting back-to-back Group 1 sprints at the Curragh where she finished sixth in the Phoenix in August and fourth in the Moyglare Stud in September.

Kendrick Carmouche sent 21-1 Frost Me to the lead through an opening quarter-mile in 25.17 seconds under moderate pressure from 59-1 Bravo Regina as Castellano angled Bubbles On Ice to the rail from the outermost post 7, saving ground from last on the heels of rail-riding 2-1 favorite Fluffy Socks.

Frost Me continued to lead the parade down the backstretch with Bravo Regina to her outside in second. Ingrassia and Sleek Lynx tracked in tandem behind the longshot leaders, while Castellano waited patiently at the back of the pack aboard Bubbles On Ice as the half-mile was clocked in 51.09.

Oyster Box rallied outside of Bravo Regina into the final turn as Bubbles On Ice followed suit with an outside move to get the jump on Fluffy Socks, who was still saving ground on the rail through three-quarters in 1:15.33.

Bubbles On Ice quickly picked off her rivals to emerge with the lead at the stretch call, but a game Fluffy Socks was angled to the center of the course by Irad Ortiz, Jr. and loomed a serious threat. Bubbles On Ice and Fluffy Socks, with very little between them, battled gamely through the final strides with Bubbles On Ice prevailing in a final time of 1:45.14 over the firm course.

It was three lengths back to Sleek Lynx in third, who won a show photo by a nose over Oyster Box. Ingrassia, Bravo Regina and Frost Me rounded out the order of finish. Main-track only entrant Song of Innocence was scratched.

Clement, who won the 2019 edition with Feel Glorious, said a ground-saving trip was key.

“The first time out, I thought it was better that she was covered up,” said Clement. “She got a great ride and saved ground. She had a great-turn-of-foot. There was a small question mark on the distance, but she showed her form this afternoon.”

Bubbles On Ice prepared for her U.S. debut at Payson Park in Florida where she recorded nine works dating back to January 4.

“When she first came here, I didn't think she was handling the turns very well in her breezes,” said Clement. “Her past two works were good at Payson Park, so I was happy with that. She answered the question about the distance this afternoon. I'm delighted.”

Castellano captured the $100,000 Woodhaven with Hard Love on Saturday's Big A card and completed a sweep of the weekend turf stakes with a masterful ride.

The Hall of Fame rider said he was impressed with how Bubbles On Ice negotiated the tighter turns of the Aqueduct inner turf.

“What really impressed me the most was the way she did it off a slow pace and tight corners,” said Castellano. “She should stretch out pretty well. It's hard for horses to come off the pace when they go as slow as they did up front, and she did it well. I really like this filly. I think she has a bright future ahead of her.”

Bred in Ireland by Michael Begley, Bubbles On Ice banked $55,000 in victory while improving her record to two wins from five starts. She returned $9.80 for a $2 win ticket.

Live racing shifts to Belmont Park for the 48-day spring/summer meet which begins Thursday, April 22 and runs through Sunday, July 11. First post on Thursday's eight-race Opening Day card is 1 p.m.

Feel Glorious Last-To-First In Memories Of Silver

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Tango Uniform Racing's Feel Glorious rallied last to first to capture the $100,000 Memories of Silver for sophomore fillies on Friday at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Trained by Christophe Clement, the daughter of Bated Breath settled at the back of the pack under Eric Cancel as La Feve carved out the early fractions marking the opening quarter-mile in 25.69 seconds and the half-mile in 49.69 in the 1 1/16-mile route over a firm outer turf course.

Blowout, the 6-5 mutuel favorite under Hall of Famer Javier Castellano, advanced down the backstretch with good energy up the rail, but stumbled slightly before recovering to fourth as La Feve, under constant pressure from Aunt Hattie, led the field into the final turn.

Cancel urged Feel Glorious into contention with a wide rally from the back while Castellano sought racing room behind the pacesetters, eventually splitting La Feve and Aunt Hattie with a strong burst to take command late in the lane.

However, Feel Glorious, racing in the clear outside of her rivals, maintained her good momentum and got up to win her North American stakes debut by a head, hitting the wire in 1:42.13.

Feel Glorious, previously trained in Europe by George Baker, was transferred to Clement in advance of her victorious North American debut on March 9 at Gulfstream Park. She remains undefeated for her new connections.

“She was very impressive when she won at Gulfstream last time,” said Christophe Lorieul, assistant to Clement. “It was a similar kind of race. She was at the back, made one run, and got the job done. Today was obviously a better field and she got the job done. She's on the improving side.

“She'll be eligible for other stakes coming up,” continued Lorieul. “The question for us was the mile and a sixteenth today, which we were not sure would be her best distance, but she proved today that she can handle it.”

Cancel, aboard Feel Glorious for the first time in the afternoon, said he followed Clement's pre-race instructions to victory.

“She has some ability. They wanted me to cover her up and when I got to the quarter-pole, I just tried to get her in the clear,” said Cancel. “The trip worked out well. I just did what they asked, and as soon as I asked her by the quarter-pole, she gave me all she had.

“It didn't matter if they went quick or slow,” added Cancel. “With the ability that she has, she's pretty tactical. She can be closer to the pace or come from behind. We had an amazing trip. She'll keep on improving. It's just her second time out [in the United States] and she won a stakes, so she's proven she has the ability to belong here.”

Blowout completed the exacta, 1 1/2-lengths in front of La Feve. Aunt Hattie and Her Royal Highness completed the order of finish. Main-track only entrants Two Dozen Roses and It Justhitthe Wire were scratched.

Castellano said Blowout, who arrived at the Memories of Silver from a good second in the Grade 3 Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs, would have appreciated more pace to chase.

“There just wasn't any pace in the race. I tried to follow the instructions for us to wait and make one move, but I had to stalk and ran into some trouble. When she got through, she went up front, so she has a lot of fight. I like that,” said Castellano.

Bred in Great Britain by Mrs. E. C. Roberts, Feel Glorious banked $55,000 in victory, improving her record to three wins and one second from seven career starts. She paid $9.20 for a $2 win ticket.

Live racing returns at the Big A on Saturday for the closing day of the spring meet, highlighted by the $100,000 Woodhaven [Race 6] along with the Park Avenue [Race 8] and Times Square [Race 9] divisions of the New York Stallion Series Stakes. There will be a mandatory payout on all pools on Saturday. First post is 1:30 p.m.
