Three Wildcards Added To Tattersalls December Sale

Half-sister to a pair of Group 1 winners and a colt foal by Mehmas (Ire) are late additions to the Tattersalls December Mares Sale and Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Five-time winner Nataleena (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}), a half-sister to Group 1 winner Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}) will sell through The Castlebridge Consignment as lot 1639A. Her dam, the Multiplex (GB) mare Hayyona (GB), is a half-sister to Group 2 victor Shimraan (Fr) (Rainbow Quest). She is in foal to Harry Angel (Ire), who has already sired stakes winners in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Joining Nataleena for the Mares Sale is Houghton Bloodstock's Five Stars (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) (lot 1639B). The sophomore is a dual winner and a half-sister to G1 Prix de Royallieu heroine Loving Dream (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}), as well as the GI American Oaks third Amandine (GB) (Shamardal). Their dam is Kissable (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), a listed winner and third in the G1 Moyglare Stud S.

Castlefarm Stud will consign the Mehmas colt as lot 725A. He is out of the winning Blissful Beauty (Fr) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), herself a half-sister to Group 2 hero Home Of The Brave (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}).

The Tattersalls December Sale begins with the December Yearling Sale on Nov. 21, followed by the December Foal Sale from Nov. 23-26. The December Mares Sale, featuring the Sceptre Sessions, will begin on Nov. 28 and go until Dec. 1.

Sioux Nation Filly Popular At Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale

The two-day Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale concluded on Thursday with a filly by Sioux Nation heading the final session at €72,000.

Consigned by Noel O'Callaghan's Mountarmstrong Stud, lot 663 is a granddaughter of the G3 Prix du Bois winner Ela Merici (Fr)  (Beaudelaire {Fr}) and was bought by the father-and-son team of Con and Neil Sands of Bronson Racing. The filly will be trained by Joseph O'Brien, who currently trains Bronson Racing's 92-rated winning juvenile Goa Gajah (Bay A Bali {Brz}).

A Mehmas (Ire) colt (lot 481) and a filly by his sire Acclamation (GB) (lot 609) each made €70,000. Oghill House Stud consigned the former, who caught the eye of Bobby O'Ryan. His great granddam was Dead Certain (GB) (Absolom {GB}), the winner of the 1989 G1 Cheveley Park S.

Lot 609, out of a Smart Strike half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Hootenanny (Quality Road), was purchased by Jack Davison Racing from the Rathbarry Stud draft.

Thursday's trade resulted in 199 sold (76%) from 263 offered for a gross of €1,863,000. The average was €9,362 (-30%) and the median was €5,500 (-45%). Overall, 394 yearlings (77%) sold from 512 offered for a gross of €3,705,400. The average was €9,405 (-33%) and the median dropped to €5,500 (-39%), but it should be noted that the 2021 edition of the sale included a dispersal from Derrinstown Stud following the death of Shadwell's Sheikh Hamdan.

BBA Ireland was the leading buyer by gross over the two-day stand just like last year, and purchased 24 head for €264,300. Clare Manning's Boherguy Stud edged out David Cox's Baroda Stud for leading consignor, with 18 sold for €290,500 versus 26 sold for €236,500.

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “You're only as good as your last sale” is an oft used adage when analysing bloodstock sales and we are all guilty of only measuring against the immediate predecessor.

“Twelve months ago the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale benefited from a large dispersal from Derrinstown Stud following the sad passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum who was such a valued and revered supporter of Goffs. That draft accounted for a quarter of the turnover with eight of the top 10 prices and propelled the sale to record breaking levels headed by a top price of €180,000.

“Those lofty heights were always going to be out of reach and so it is that the statistics from the last two days are well behind 2021. However we are far from despondent when reviewing this year's renewal as it has finished ahead of every other incarnation of the Open/Autumn Yearling Sale since its inception in 2010 with a second-best turnover, average and median flowing from a reasonable clearance rate of 77%. Whilst some of these figures do not necessarily point to massive returns for breeders, they do demonstrate a vibrancy to the proceedings and those that appealed most had plenty of admirers.

“Demand over the two days has been driven by a truly international buying bench with a flood of overseas buyers headed by a large group from Italy who accounted for nigh on 100 yearlings and another strong contingent from Eastern Europe who bought over 50 with a further 20 plus heading for China. There were also significant parties from Scandinavia, Germany, the Gulf Region, Libya, USA and France taking on spirited bidders from the UK and Ireland. All of these international visitors were attracted to Kildare Paddocks by the reputation of Irish breeders and their world class bloodlines which allow our passionate Purchaser Attraction Team, working in tandem with our network of international agents and the team at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, to trumpet their attributes on the global stage. How lucky we are to have the assistance of the latter group as they provide an invaluable and unique service to those who choose to sell here whilst the superb IRE Incentive is a real plus for sellers in Ireland.

“As the sale closes we can reflect on vibrant, strong and positive renewals of all three parts of the Irish National Yearling Sale, each of which graphically makes our case that Irish breeders can sell, and sell extremely well, to the world at Goffs as highlighted by the Orby sale topper of €2.6M which proved to be the world's top-priced yearling filly of 2022 and a high of €300,000 at Sportsman's, the highest priced yearling ever sold in Ireland outside the Orby Sale.”

Fasig Bound Going Global Adds Another Graded Tally

Just minutes after her stablemate Balnikhov (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) took Keeneland's GIII Bryan Station S., millionaire Going Global added another graded tally to her CV in what is likely to be the final start of her career. The bay is set to be offered next Sunday as hip 292 at Fasig-Tipton's Night of the Stars.

The Irish import won six of her first seven Stateside starts, including the GI Del Mar Oaks last August followed by a score in this event last term when it was held at Del Mar as part of Breeders' Cup weekend. Her Grade II victories this year came in the Apr. 9 GII Royal Heroine S. and Aug. 13 GII Yellow Ribbon H., and she was looking to settle a score with Avenue de France (Fr) (Cityscape {GB}), who turned the tables on her last time in Del Mar's GII John C. Mabee S. Sept. 10.

Away in second, Going Global was taken back one slot approaching the first bend and took up a perfect rail spot. She split foes and went for the lead after six panels in 1:10.80, quickly spurted clear in upper stretch and held sway from there.

“I was on the right horse,” said winning rider Umberto Rispoli. “She is very easy to ride. Once I hit the turn to go home, I just pressed the button and she did the rest. She can go forever, and it's a good way to go out. It's always sad to see a horse like her go. I feel so privileged and grateful to have been on her for her final race.”

Added conditioner Phil D'Amato, “She's just the epitome of a champion in my heart. She's done so much for me. She's won many graded stakes in stylish fashion and she's probably the best grass filly I've ever trained… It means a lot and to send her out, potentially a winner, I mean that's what I thought we owed to her, and she did it in stylish fashion… She just has all the attributes, the heart, the will and an unbelievable turn of foot.”

Co-owner Michael Nentwig, who has enjoyed an incredible run with European imports in recent years, said while fighting back tears: “She is an amazing filly. She is a once in a lifetime horse. It is sad to see her go. This is tough. She is so tough. She leaves next Thursday for the sale. If the right price is not met, then we will bring her back and decide about racing her again.”

Pedigree Notes:

Going Global is one of a trio of highest-level winners from her sire's first crop, and one of his 11 group/graded winners, but is the only to do so in the U.S. despite a number of other productive runners in the States, including Friday's Chelsey Flower S. runner-up Tax Implications (GB). Horse of the Year and GI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Invasor (Arg) has sired the dams of three graded/group winners.

After producing Going Global and her year-younger Group 3-winning half-brother Mitbaahy (Ire), dam Wrood's subsequent foals have been in very high demand. Her now 2-year-old filly Canadiansmokeshow (Ire) (U S Navy Flag) was a €290,000 Goffs Orby yearling and was most recently second at Southwell 20 days earlier, while her yearling filly by Saxon Warrior (Jpn) fetched 450,000gns from Al Shira'aa Racing during Book 1 of Tattersalls October. Going Global has a full brother foaled Apr. 23.

Horris Hill Success For Mehmas’s Knight

Bringing TDN Rising Star status into Saturday's G3 Virgin Bet Horris Hill S. at Newbury, KHK Racing's Knight (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}–Fidaaha {Ire}, by New Approach {Ire}) emerged from an intriguing renewal of the seven-furlong staging post with reputation enhanced as he proved top dog among the Classic hopefuls.

Tackling testing ground having operated with style on good-to-soft on his impressive debut at Yarmouth Sept. 25, the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained full-brother to the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte and G3 Prix Imprudence winner and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and G1 Prix de la Foret runner-up Malavath (Ire) found cover behind the front-running Grey's Monument (GB) (Territories {Ire}) and when asked to take on that rival by David Egan inside the final two furlongs responded generously.

Asserting from the furlong pole, the 10-1 shot had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over the long-time leader at the line, with a further length back to Ancestral Land (GB) (Sioux Nation) in third.

“That was very impressive,” Egan said. “I rode him at home before his debut and he's really physically improved since then in a short space of time. He was a different horse today–he raced very economically throughout and showed greenness but really picked up his knees and grabbed the ground. He's very exciting for next year–if a 2-year-old can gallop out on those deep conditions over seven you'd be very confident that he'd get a mile. He's got to be respected now he's won a Horris Hill.”

Ed Crisford added, “It was hard to guess what he achieved on his first start, but he'd trained well after it. His sister gets through this ground with a high knee action and we were hopeful he would. He's an exciting colt and probably a Guineas horse who will go for a trial–the Craven or the Greenham. The owners are having a great year, winning the Leger and the Mill Reef and they have a few with us.”

Pedigree Notes

Knight, who cost 210,000gns at the Book 2 Sale, is the second foal out of the Shadwell cast-off Fidaaha after the aforementioned Malavath, who showed her appreciation of this kind of ground when two-lengths second to Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the Foret three weeks ago. She is a full-sister to the GIII Robert G. Dick Memorial S. winner Ceisteach (Ire) and a half to Steip Amach (Ire) (Vocalised) who annexed the G3 Killavullan S. and G3 Amethyst S. before finishing third in the G1 Prix Rothschild and G1 Prix Jean Romanet.

The third dam Sharafanya (Ire) (Zafonic) is kin to the G2 Goldene Peitsche winner Giant Sandman (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) and to the listed-placed dam of the G1 Prix de l'Opera heroine Shalanaya (Ire) (Lomitas {GB}). This is the family of the great Shergar (GB). Fidaaha, who cost Tally Ho Stud a mere €15,000 at the 2017 Goffs November Mares Sale, is also responsible for the filly by Cotai Glory (GB) who sold to Ken Condon for €200,000 at last month's Goffs Orby. Her 2022 foal is a full-brother to the winner and Malavath.
